Tréology is about connecting people to nature through functional art. Odyssey was created after a road trip to New Zealand's wild West Coast to observe nature’s craft work. Looking deep into nature, we saw the layered rock formations along the sea coast and rivers of New Zealand to achieve a functional table base. The design progression sought to bring layering metaphors into the piece, but a solid mass would be visually too heavy. The solution was to add volume through the introduction of negative space and deliver an abstract representation of the rocks and boulders we observed. The Emerge side table is a modern organic form made from ancient matai trees (a native timber of New Zealand) that have fallen naturally into rivers and preserved for hundreds of years under sediment layers before natural water erosion exposes them. We rescue these trees from the river and continue their journey to become a cherished piece of functional art.
