Spanning an era of cultural rebirth in Europe that harkened back to antiquity, the Renaissance was a time of change in design. From the late 1400s to the early 1600s, Rome, Venice and Florence emerged as artistic centers through the expansion of global trade and a humanist belief in the arts being central to society. Antique Renaissance furniture was ornately carved from sturdy woods like walnut, its details standing out against the tapestries and stained glass adorning the walls.
Renaissance chests, which were frequently commissioned for marriages, were often decorated with gilding or painted elements. Those that were known as cassoni were crafted in shapes based on classical sarcophagi. As opposed to the medieval era, when furniture was pared down to the necessities, a wide range of Renaissance chairs, tables and cabinets were created for the home, and the designs regularly referenced ancient Rome.
Large torchères of the Renaissance era that were used as floor lamps were inspired by classical candelabras, while marble surfaces evoked frescoes. The inlaid boxes being imported from the Middle East informed the intarsia technique, which involved varying hues of wood in mosaic-like patterns, such as those by architect Giuliano da Maiano in the Florence Cathedral.
Tapestry-woven cushion covers accented the variety of Renaissance seating — from conversation to study chairs — while bookcases for secular use reflected the migration of culture and knowledge from the church into the home. The aesthetics of the Italian Renaissance later spread to France through the publishing of work by renowned designers, including Hugues Sambin and Jacques Androuet du Cerceau. Centuries later, the 19th-century Renaissance Revival would see a return to this influential style.

19th Century Round Extending Dining Table solid Walnut Bassano Area Wax Polished
Located in Vigonza, Padua
An elegant and exceptionally well-constructed 19th-century Italian extending dining table, handcrafted in solid walnut and originating from the historic cabinetmaking tradition of the Bassano area, long celebrated for the quality of its artisanal woodworking. The table is distinguished by its harmonious oval form, warm walnut patina, and beautifully balanced proportions. In its closed configuration, the piece presents a refined circular silhouette, while the integrated extension system transforms it into a generous oval dining table of remarkable versatility. Crafted entirely in solid walnut, with an impressive total weight of approximately 160 kg, the table conveys the material integrity and structural seriousness characteristic of traditional Northern Italian craftsmanship. The richly figured top reveals subtle tonal variations and natural grain movement developed over nearly two centuries. The base is particularly elegant, featuring turned legs connected by shaped cross stretchers, creating a dynamic architectural composition that combines stability with visual lightness. The underside construction and extension mechanism further demonstrate the quality of the original cabinetmaking techniques. The table comes from a historic family villa in Marostica, in the Veneto region, adding an important layer of provenance and authenticity. Since March 2001, it has formed part of the A&MYART Collection, where it has been carefully preserved. Both sculptural and highly functional, this piece is ideally suited for sophisticated interiors seeking authentic Italian character, whether used as a central dining table, entertaining table, or statement piece within a curated design environmen Details Type: Extending Dining Table Period: 19th Century Origin: Bassano area, Italy Provenance: Family villa, Marostica, Italy Collection: A&MYART Collection (since March 2001) Materials: Solid walnut Extension: Central extension system Condition: Good antique condition with wear consistent with age and use Weight: Approx. 160 kg Dimensions Height: 31.5 in (80 cm) Diameter: 51.2 in (130 cm) Extended Length: 67.7 in (172 cm) Collector’s Note Authentic extending walnut dining tables from the Bassano cabinetmaking tradition are increasingly appreciated for their combination of sculptural warmth, practicality, and enduring craftsmanship. The strong architectural base and generous solid walnut construction give this piece a presence rarely found in later reproductions. About Bassano del Grappa: Bassano del Grappa is known for the three great traditions that have made it famous: ceramics, whose productions, linked to the prestigious Antonibon family, are admirable in the Museum of ceramics at Palazzo Sturm; the typography developed between 1600 and 1800 by the Remondini family, an illustrious family of publishers and engravers of the most important Italian printing industry and the cabinet makers who produced furniture for the nearby Venice from the 16th century. The architectural context of Bassano del Grappa is a dive into art: the streets of the center are adorned by the works of authors such as Palladio, Canova, Jacopo Da Ponte...
