Stripped 19th Century French Oak Renaissance Style Table with Marble Top

About the Item

As is the case with most French Renaissance style furniture, this beautiful stripped oak table with marble top features elaborate sculptural ornamentation. Hand-carved in France in the late 1800’s, the table is rife with Early Renaissance style forms, such as lions, acanthus scrolls, and geometric shapes. The oak wood was recently stripped, allowing the amazing carvings to be showcased. A one-inch thick dark brown marble, likely “Spanish Emperador”, with cavetto molding sits on top of the beveled base edge that is adorned with a repeating foliate motif. The brown marble has white veining amongst large black and chocolate inclusions that nicely offsets the golden hued wood. Like the top, the base has canted corners which overhang a lion mascaron with a brass ring in the mouth. Each lion’s mane transitions seamlessly into a large acanthus leaf above downward facing gadrooned finials. There are two smaller finials on the apron of each of the shorter sides, underneath niche cutouts surrounded by florets. All sides have a frieze festooned with acanthus margents surrounding an oval medallion. The aprons of the long sides are both embellished with round crenellation, while the front side décor is flanked by a pair of acanthus S-scrolls with volute hubs. This facade also has a pull-out drawer above the row of bead and reel that encircles the entire base. A pair of baluster form legs with gadrooning over acanthus cups extend into an H-stretcher with four large dolphin feet. The connector is chamfered, with the edges having foliate and geometric shape motifs. Our stripped oak Renaissance style table with marble top would make a lovely side table in a common area such as a living room. The marble top also allows the table to be used as a writing/laptop desk in an office or bedroom.

  • 17th Century Spanish Walnut Wood Table with Single Plank Top
    Located in Dallas, TX
A beautifully crafted wooden table from Spain, the walnut was hand-carved at the end of the Renaissance (in the 1600’s). As is the case with most Spanish Renaissance tables, the 1 ½” thick single plank top rests upon tightly turned legs. The edges of the top do not have molding or carvings but receive added character from the large dovetail grooves that were used to construct the table. This table has framing beneath the top plank which houses three horizontally aligned drawers. Each drawer façade has an iron escutcheon in the shape of shield with two engrailed top edges. The keyplate is set within a foliate margent that is surrounded by several layers of molding. Identical carvings and iron plates can be seen on the opposite side of the table, which has faux drawer fronts. Beneath the belt are four turned legs connected by an H-stretcher. Our 17th century Spanish walnut table...

The white gesso/paint has been partially left throughout the table base and then glazed over to produce a beautiful and unique finish. • Antique 19th Century Italian Maiolica Pot of the Renaissance Style
    Located in Dallas, TX
Vivid colors, hand-painted in the Renaissance style, enhance this large maiolica pot from the 1800’s. Maiolica is tin-glazed pottery from Italy that has been decorated over a white background. This pot is considered an istoriato, which is to say that the pot has been decorated with figures, rather than strictly geometric patterns or floral designs. The maiolica does incorporate floral and foliate motifs, with white flowers that have yellow centers surrounded by blue rings. There are also yellow flowers that are depicted in various stages of nyctinasty (the closing of flowers during the night). The flora is all connected by a series of green and yellow curled leaves. Behind the vegetation is a dark blue background. There are two portraits inside large yellow cartouches that are painted in the middle of the pot. The first is a bearded man, dressed in a light brown tunic...
