Two Stems with Red Flowers – Botanical Watercolor by A.L., 1819
Two Stems with Red Flowers – Botanical Watercolor by A.L., 1819

Two Stems with Red Flowers – Botanical Watercolor by A.L., 1819

Located in Langweer, NL

TITLE: Two Stems with Red Flowers – Original Botanical Watercolor by A.L., 1819 DESCRIPTION: A refined original botanical watercolor depicting two slender stems bearing vivid red flowers and delicately rendered green leaves, painted in 1819 by an unidentified artist with the initials A.L. The composition is elegant and restrained, with the flowering stems isolated against the natural cream-colored paper. The artist has carefully observed the structure of the plant, combining botanical precision with the decorative quality characteristic of early 19th-century flower studies. The work is monogrammed “A.L.” on the left stem and dated “1819” on the right. Particularly noteworthy is the paper itself, which bears the watermark “J. Whatman 1817.” James Whatman's celebrated English papers were highly regarded by artists and printmakers for their quality and durability. The watermark dates the manufacture of the paper to 1817, while the artist's inscription dates the execution of the watercolor to 1819. The two dates therefore provide an unusually clear chronology: the Whatman sheet was manufactured in 1817 and used by the artist for this botanical watercolor two years later, in 1819. An attractive and unusually well-documented original botanical artwork from the Regency period. ARTIST: A.L., unidentified artist. The work is monogrammed “A.L.” on the left stem. DATE: 1819 - dated on the artwork. MEDIUM: Original watercolor on paper PAPER: J. Whatman paper, watermarked 1817 ORIGIN: European, probably British or Continental European PERIOD / STYLE: Regency period Early 19th century Botanical / Natural History SUBJECT: Two stems with red flowers Botanical study Flower study DIMENSIONS: Image: approximately 29 × 16.5 cm Sheet: approximately 46 × 32.5 cm MARKS: Monogrammed “A.L.” on the left stem. Dated “1819” on the right. Paper watermarked “J. Whatman 1817.” CONDITION: Very good antique condition. The watercolor retains attractive and strong colors. Some light age-related toning and occasional minor foxing are present. A subtle former light line is visible, consistent with previous presentation beneath a passe-partout. The sheet was attached beneath a passe-partout along the upper edge. FRAMING: Offered unframed. Any framed or interior photographs shown are for presentation and inspiration only. AUTHENTICITY: An original, unique hand-painted watercolor dating from 1819. This is not a print, engraving or modern reproduction. KEYWORDS: botanical watercolor, original watercolor, botanical painting, flower watercolor, red flowers, botanical study, flower study, A.L. artist, monogrammed watercolor, dated 1819, Regency botanical art, Regency watercolor, early 19th century watercolor, 19th century botanical art, J Whatman, Whatman 1817, Whatman paper, English paper, antique botanical painting...

Original Antique Print of an Atlas Moth by Bertuch, circa 1800
Original Antique Print of an Atlas Moth by Bertuch, circa 1800

Original Antique Print of an Atlas Moth by Bertuch, circa 1800

Located in Langweer, NL

Original Antique Print of an Atlas Moth by Bertuch, circa 1800 Original antique hand-colored copper engraving depicting the magnificent Atlas moth (Attacus atlas), one of the largest and most spectacular moths in the world. The plate is titled “Insecten XXVIII / Insectes XXVIII” and originates from Friedrich Justin Bertuch’s celebrated “Bilderbuch für Kinder,” published in Weimar around 1800. The enormous moth is shown with its wings fully extended across a flowering branch. Its richly patterned wings are beautifully rendered in shades of rust, ochre, cream, black and pink, with the characteristic translucent, window-like markings prominently displayed. The combination of the dramatically oversized insect and delicate botanical background makes this one of the more visually striking natural-history subjects in Bertuch’s series. The Atlas moth is native to the tropical forests of South and Southeast Asia and is renowned for its extraordinary wingspan. Its distinctive wing tips have often been noted for their resemblance to the head of a snake, possibly serving as a defensive adaptation against predators. The engraving bears the inscription “Jacob H. Schmuzer” at lower right. Friedrich Justin Bertuch (1747–1822) was a German publisher, writer and patron of the arts. His monumental “Bilderbuch für Kinder” (Picture Book for Children) was one of the great illustrated educational encyclopedias of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Published in Weimar from 1790 onward, the work contained hundreds of finely engraved and hand-colored plates devoted to natural history, geography, science, technology, costumes and mythology. A particularly decorative and impressive antique natural-history print, well suited to collectors of butterflies and moths, entomology and early scientific illustration. Creator: Friedrich Justin Bertuch (1747–1822) Engraver: Jacob H. Schmuzer Source: Bilderbuch für Kinder Plate: Insecten XXVIII / Insectes XXVIII Place of Publication: Weimar, Germany Date of Manufacture: Circa 1800 Period: Early 19th Century Style: Neoclassical – In the Period of Medium: Original hand-colored copper engraving on paper Condition: Good. Wear consistent with age and use. Light age-related toning and occasional minor spotting. Some marginal wear and small imperfections, particularly along the right edge. Original hand coloring remains strong and attractive. Please refer to the photographs for further details of condition. Please note: This is an original antique print from circa 1800, not a modern reproduction. The print is sold unframed. The long vertical sweep of the Nile immediately draws the eye, flowing from the Mediterranean through Cairo and Upper Egypt toward Lower Nubia, framed by delicately engraved desert regions and subtle coastal shading along the Red Sea. Produced by Rand, McNally & Co. at the height of late-19th-century American atlas design, the map combines clarity with a restrained pastel palette that works exceptionally well in contemporary interiors. The balance between open desert spaces and the finely detailed river corridor gives the sheet a calm, almost meditative presence on the wall, making it particularly attractive for living rooms, studies, libraries, or hospitality settings. Cartographic details are crisp yet unobtrusive, allowing the overall composition to read as decorative rather than technical. The typography is elegant and evenly spaced, while the hand-colored regions add warmth without overpowering the design. When framed, the vertical format emphasizes the monumental scale of the Nile and creates a strong visual anchor in a room. A particularly appealing feature of this sheet is that the reverse side displays a decorative map of Africa, making it a versatile double-sided atlas leaf. This adds interest for collectors and interior designers alike, whether framed with visible margins, floated in a double-glazed frame, or appreciated as a historical object in a portfolio or drawer. Printed on original late-19th-century atlas paper, this map retains the authentic texture and presence expected of a period piece, offering both decorative impact and historical character without feeling heavy or academic. Condition report: Original atlas paper with light age toning consistent with period. Minor edge wear and gentle handling marks typical of bound atlas sheets. Overall well preserved with clean color and strong legibility. Framing tips: This map works beautifully in a light oak, walnut, or muted gold frame with an off-white or warm ivory mat. A tall vertical mat emphasizes the flow of the Nile and enhances the architectural feel. Museum glass is recommended to preserve the soft pastel tones. Jonstonus Friesian and Hungarian Horses Engraving, 1650 Description: Original antique copper engraving depicting two European horse breeds: the Friesian horse (“Equus Frisicus – Frisisch Pferd”) and the Pannonian or Hungarian horse (“Equus Pannonicus sive Hungaric – Hungarisches Pferd”). The upper composition shows the powerful Friesian horse standing in profile, distinguished by its heavy build, long flowing mane and feathered legs. Below, the Hungarian horse is represented in a dramatic rearing pose, creating a particularly lively and decorative equestrian composition. The engraving was published in Joannes Jonstonus’ important Historiae naturalis de quadrupetibus, Frankfurt am Main, 1650. The work was issued by the heirs of Matthäus Merian and forms part of Jonstonus’ celebrated multi-volume natural history of animals. Joannes Jonstonus (1603–1675), also known as John Johnston or Jan Jonston, was a Polish-born physician, naturalist and scholar. His extensive natural-history publications were among the important illustrated zoological works of the 17th century, preceding the systematic classification of Linnaeus by more than a century. From the first edition of Historiae naturalis de quadrupetibus, published in Frankfurt by the Merian publishing house in 1650. Set of 6 Ottoman Costume Prints, Hand-Colored Engravings, 1767 Description: A highly decorative and cohesive set of six original hand-colored engravings depicting figures in Ottoman dress, published in London in 1767 by Thomas Jefferys, Geographer to His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. These prints originate from the important 18th-century publication *A Collection of the Dresses of Different Nations, Ancient and Modern*, a work that reflects Europe’s growing fascination with global cultures and costume traditions. The engravings are based on designs after notable artists such as Holbein, Van Dyke, and Hollar, and combine ethnographic interest with refined decorative appeal. Each engraving presents a full-length figure in traditional Ottoman attire, rendered with clarity and elegance against a clean background. The garments—flowing robes, layered textiles, and distinctive headwear—are highlighted through delicate and well-preserved hand coloring. The set includes the following figures: Habit of the Greek Sultana, 1749 Habit of the White Sultana, 1749 Habit of the Black Sultana, 1749 Habit of a Turkish Lady of the Grand Seignior’s Seraglio, 1568 Habit of the Janesary Aga, or Chief Commandant of the Janissaries Habit of the Tchorbadgi, or Captain of the Janissaries, 1700 This grouping forms a harmonious and balanced composition, particularly suitable for a symmetrical wall display. With a consistent scale and palette, the set offers a refined decorative presence while retaining strong historical character. Such costume engravings are increasingly valued for their versatility in interior design, bridging 18th-century craftsmanship with contemporary decorative aesthetics. Interior mockups shown are for inspiration only. All prints are original antiques, not reproductions, and are sold unframed. Condition: Very good condition overall. Light age toning as expected. Occasional minor spotting in the margins. Strong impressions with original hand color. Plate marks visible. Framing tips: Best presented in identical dark walnut or ebonized frames with wide ivory mats. Hang as a symmetrical grid (3 × 2 or 2 × 3) for a refined and balanced wall composition.
