Copernican Solar System – Celestial Plan, Doppelmayer, Hand-Colored c.1742

Located in Langweer, NL

Copernican Solar System – Celestial Plan, Doppelmayer, Hand-Colored c.1742 Description: This large and finely engraved celestial chart illustrates the Copernican solar system and is titled Ephemerides Motuum Coelestium Geometrica, a scientific visualization of planetary motion according to the Copernican hypothesis. The work was created by Johann Gabriel Doppelmayer and published in Nuremberg circa 1742, during the height of the Enlightenment’s engagement with astronomy and mathematical science. The map is offered unframed, giving flexibility to select a frame that best suits the intended interior. The chart presents a geometric representation of the irregular motions of the planets, including their directions, stations, and retrogradations. At the center is the sun, surrounded by concentric, color-coded orbital bands representing the paths of Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. Radiating lines and numerical annotations record observed planetary positions across specific dates, translating empirical observation into visual form. Surrounding diagrams provide auxiliary explanations of orbital mechanics, apparent motion, and planetary phenomena. These panels were intended for scholarly use, offering astronomers, mathematicians, and educated readers a precise tool for understanding celestial movement within the Copernican framework. The Latin text reinforces its academic purpose and confirms its role as a serious scientific instrument rather than a decorative fantasy. The composition is further enriched by allegorical figures representing astronomy and the celestial sciences, engraved in the Baroque tradition and delicately hand colored. These figures bridge science and art, a hallmark of Doppelmayer’s work, making the chart both intellectually rigorous and visually compelling. Johann Gabriel Doppelmayer was one of the leading scientific illustrators and mathematicians of the Holy Roman Empire, closely associated with the Nuremberg publishing world. His celestial charts are today prized for their accuracy, clarity, and refined engraving quality. This engraving stands as an important document in the history of astronomy, marking the widespread acceptance of the Copernican system in 18th-century Europe. It is highly desirable for collectors of scientific instruments, astronomical prints, Enlightenment-era works, and decorative interiors with intellectual character. This chart was produced by Johann Gabriel Doppelmayer and published in Nuremberg circa 1742. Doppelmayer was a leading mathematician and scientific illustrator of the early Enlightenment, closely associated with the Nuremberg scientific publishing tradition. His Ephemerides Motuum Coelestium Geometrica played an important role in visualizing and popularizing the Copernican heliocentric system through precise geometric representation of planetary motion. Condition report: Good condition overall. Contemporary hand coloring. Light age toning and patina throughout, with minor browning and scattered surface marks consistent with age. Vertical centerfold as issued. Small handling wear at margins. No modern restoration observed. Framing tips: This chart benefits from a museum-style presentation. Use a wide ivory or warm off-white mat to balance the strong colors, paired with a dark walnut, ebonized, or gilt frame. UV-protective glazing is recommended due to the original hand coloring. Note: We supply this original antique map unframed. Technique: Engraved map with contemporary hand coloring Maker: Johann Gabriel Doppelmayer, Nuremberg, circa 1742 Keyword block: celestial map, astronomical chart, Copernican system, solar system engraving, Johann Gabriel Doppelmayer, Doppelmayer celestial map, antique astronomy print, Enlightenment science, planetary orbits, ephemerides, retrograde motion, planetary motion diagram, heliocentric model, 18th century astronomy, scientific engraving, hand colored celestial map, Baroque astronomy, Nuremberg engraving, rare astronomy chart, historical science print, antique star chart...

Napoleonic Architecture Engravings Set, Baltard Paris Monuments Plates - 1803

By Louis-Pierre Baltard

Located in Langweer, NL

Napoleonic Architectural Engravings Set, Baltard Paris Monuments Plates, 1803 This striking set of eight early 19th-century architectural engravings originates from the rare French publication Paris et ses Monuments, mesurés, dessinés et gravés, created by architect and engraver Louis-Pierre Baltard and published in Paris in 1803 during the early Napoleonic period. Baltard’s monumental publication was dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte and aimed to systematically document the architectural treasures of Paris and its surrounding monuments through precise measurement, architectural drawing, and finely executed copperplate engravings. Today the work is regarded as one of the earliest comprehensive visual surveys of Parisian architecture produced during the Napoleonic era. The present group forms a visually balanced and highly decorative set illustrating several aspects of classical and Renaissance architecture. The engravings include façade elevations, architectural plans, ornamental studies, sculptural fragments, and atmospheric architectural views. Together they present a remarkable overview of architectural design, structural composition, and decorative detail typical of the scholarly architectural publications produced in France at the beginning of the nineteenth century. One of the most notable plates in the group shows the measured plan of the Château d’Écouen, one of the most important Renaissance châteaux in France. Built in the sixteenth century for the powerful Montmorency family, the château later became an important national monument and today houses the Musée National de la Renaissance. The engraved plan carefully illustrates the château’s symmetrical layout around its central courtyard together with the surrounding terraces, landscaped grounds, and tree-lined avenues. Other plates depict grand classical façades, monumental arches, richly carved capitals, sculptural ornaments, and picturesque architectural views set within wooded landscapes. Baltard’s engravings are admired for their combination of architectural precision and refined artistic engraving. Crisp linework defines the structural forms, while delicate shading creates depth in the sculptural and landscape elements. Architectural engravings from Paris et ses Monuments have become increasingly desirable among collectors, architects, and interior designers. Their refined balance between scholarly architectural documentation and decorative visual appeal makes them particularly suitable for elegant interiors such as libraries, studies, galleries, or sophisticated European-style homes. Displayed together as a gallery wall, the engravings create a striking architectural ensemble reflecting the intellectual spirit and artistic ambition of the Napoleonic period. The original antique engravings are offered unframed, giving flexibility to select frames that best suit the intended interior. Condition report: Very good condition for early nineteenth-century engravings. Printed on laid paper with wide margins. Light age toning and occasional small spots consistent with age. The engraved impressions remain sharp and clear. Framing tips: These engravings display beautifully as a coordinated wall set. Dark walnut or black frames with generous ivory or warm off-white mats create a refined museum-style presentation. For a more contemporary interior, thin black gallery frames with wide mats highlight the elegant linework and architectural detail. Technique: Copperplate engraving Maker: Louis-Pierre Baltard, Paris, 1803 Keywords: napoleonic architectural engravings, baltard paris monuments 1803, antique french architecture prints...

Antique Map Italy, Bartholomew for Black’s General Atlas, Edinburgh 1884 Description: This detailed map of Italy was published in the New and Revised Edition of Black’s General Atlas of the World, issued in Edinburgh in 1884 by the respected Scottish publishing house A. & C. Black. The map was prepared under the direction of the renowned cartographer John Bartholomew, whose work played a major role in shaping nineteenth-century atlas cartography. John Bartholomew was one of the most influential mapmakers of the Victorian era. His atlases for A. & C. Black were admired for their clarity, precision, and elegant presentation. Combining scientific geographic accuracy with refined engraving and printed color, Bartholomew’s maps became widely used in education, government, and scholarly circles throughout Europe and the British Empire. The map presents the Italian peninsula shortly after the unification of Italy in the nineteenth century. Political divisions are clearly distinguished through printed color, showing the administrative regions of the newly unified kingdom. The map extends from the Alpine frontier in the north to the southern tip of Calabria, capturing the entire peninsula with remarkable geographic detail. Northern Italy shows the Alpine region bordering Switzerland and Austria, with cities such as Turin, Milan, and Venice prominently marked. The Po River basin is depicted with a dense network of towns and transportation routes reflecting the economic importance of the region. Central Italy includes Florence, Pisa, and Rome, while the southern regions show Naples and the mountainous landscapes of Calabria and Basilicata. The map also includes the major Italian islands.
