Large Antique Buffet Food Warmer From The Household Supply Bond St. London

Located in Morristown, NJ

London, England C. 1884 a Boyd's Patent Campaign Cooker Food Warmer, also known as The Universal Heater. This unit is larger than others, having four openings for warmers. It has a removable top with a scalloped edge, is silverplate and has interlocking monogram engraved on the top (the initials are LW/WL with a crown symbol). The stand bottom is marked, "BOYD'S PATENT" and has six turned wooden bun feet. The underside also has a plaque reading "THE HOUSEHOLD SUPPLY AND ATMOSPHERIC CHURN COMP'Y LTD, 119 NEW BOND ST, W". While missing the original spirit burners, modern day sternos would work well. This is a very attractive and decorative item that could be used for a variety of purposes including food warming and display, a unique charcuterie board, for floral display and so on. I have seen copper versions that comprised a cooker/warmer , two spirit burners with snuffer caps and a cast iron...

Antique Trojan War Map – Bellum Trojanum Mediterranean, Wilkinson 1815

Antique Trojan War Map – Bellum Trojanum Mediterranean, Wilkinson 1815

Located in Langweer, NL

Title: Antique Trojan War Map – Bellum Trojanum Mediterranean, Wilkinson 1815 This finely engraved and delicately hand-colored antique map titled Bellum Trojanum (The Trojan War) presents the eastern Mediterranean world as understood through the legendary narratives of Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey. Published in London in 1815 by the respected British cartographer and publisher Robert Wilkinson, the map formed part of his scholarly Atlas Classica, an atlas created to illustrate the lands and geography described by ancient Greek and Roman authors. Wilkinson’s Atlas Classica was produced during a period of intense European fascination with classical antiquity. Educators, historians, and scholars sought visual tools to accompany the study of Homer, Virgil, Herodotus, and other ancient writers. This map reflects that intellectual movement by reconstructing the geography of the Mediterranean as it related to the events of the Trojan War and the legendary journeys of the heroes who emerged from it. The map spans the eastern Mediterranean basin, extending from southern Italy and Sicily in the west across Greece, the Aegean Sea, and Asia Minor to the Levant and Syria in the east. The Black Sea (Pontus Euxinus) appears in the northeast, while North Africa and the coast of Libya are visible to the south. Classical place names appear throughout the map, including Italia, Sicilia, Graecia, Macedonia, Thracia, Asia Minor, Phrygia, Lydia, and Syria. The famous site of Troy is shown on the northwestern coast of Asia Minor near the Dardanelles. A particularly fascinating feature of the map is the network of curved routes drawn across the Mediterranean Sea. These lines trace the legendary voyages of figures associated with the Trojan War cycle. Among them are the journeys of Aeneas following the fall of Troy, the travels of Telemachus searching for his father, and the long wanderings of Odysseus (Ulysses) as described in the Odyssey. These routes connect famous locations such as Troy, Crete, Sicily, Carthage, and the shores of Greece and Italy, transforming the map into a visual narrative of classical mythology. The engraving is precise and elegant, typical of late eighteenth-century British cartography. The map was engraved by E. Bourne, whose fine line work and careful lettering give the sheet a refined and scholarly appearance. Subtle contemporary hand coloring highlights the ancient regions and coastlines, adding visual clarity and decorative charm. Today the map appeals not only to collectors of antique cartography but also to those interested in classical literature, mythology, and the history of ancient Mediterranean civilizations. It provides a striking visual interpretation of the epic journeys that have shaped Western storytelling for more than two millennia. This example is an original antique map printed in 1798 and hand-colored at the time of publication. It is not a modern reproduction. Any presentation images showing the map framed are for visual inspiration only. The map is supplied unframed. Condition: Good antique condition with attractive original hand coloring. Light age toning and minor handling marks consistent with age. The sheet retains generous margins suitable for framing. Framing tips: This map frames beautifully in a dark walnut or ebonized wood frame with a generous ivory or museum-white mat. A double mat with a subtle gold inner fillet complements the warm tones of the antique paper and highlights the elegant engraving. Such a presentation works particularly well in a study, library, or classical interior setting. Keyword block: Bellum Trojanum, Trojan War map, Homer Iliad map, Odyssey map, ancient Greece map, ancient Mediterranean map, Troy map, Aeneas voyage, Odysseus voyage, Ulysses route, Telemachus journey, Atlas Classica map, Robert Wilkinson map, London 1798 map, Pontus Euxinus, Black Sea map, Aegean Sea map, Mediterranean Sea map, Sicilia, Italia, Graecia, Macedonia, Thracia, Asia Minor, Phrygia, Lydia, Syria, Crete, Carthage, Libya, ancient mythology map, classical geography map, Homeric geography, antique Mediterranean map...

It encompasses the northern African coast from Morocco to Libya, the Iberian Peninsula, and the western Mediterranean, including notable islands such as Sardinia, Corsica, Malta, the Balearics, and Sicily, where a smoking Mount Etna is depicted. The map is embellished with three decorative cartouches, adding artistic flair to the detailed geographical renderings. Engraved by Jean Baptiste Liebaux, the map measures 25.2 inches wide by 19.1 inches high. It features a sharp impression with contemporary outline color, later enhanced cartouches, and is printed on a bright sheet with a Society of Jesus watermark. Russian Imperial Silver Punch Set From Czar Alexander III
Russian Imperial Silver Punch Set From Czar Alexander III

Russian Imperial Silver Punch Set From Czar Alexander III

Located in New Orleans, LA

A monumental piece of history, this exquisite silver punch set was made for Czar Alexander III as a gift to British Captain Joseph Wiggins. Heavily decorated with rich engravings and proverbs in old Slavic lettering, this service is a grand symbol of celebration and a testament to the beauty of Russian Imperial silver. The punch set, a standalone treasure in its own right, was gifted by Czar Alexander III to Captain Wiggins in recognition of his pioneering expedition along the Enisei River. Driven by a desire to establish a sea route with Siberia, Captain Wiggins’ journey is notable for being the first successful endeavor by a British seaman in 300 years to extend commercial interests with the northern coasts of Russia. Even more notable is the presentation of this elaborate gift by the Russian government to a foreign national, particularly when the British government all but ignored Wiggins' efforts. In fact, the British government refused his modest request for surveying and observational instruments. Even so, the Czar was impressed, and chose to honor Wiggins with this exceptional punch service — as pictured and discussed in Henry Johnson’s book Captain Joseph Wiggins, written in 1907. The service was commissioned by the Czar from the House of Sazikov, the oldest silversmith and jewelry firm in Russia. Sazikov was established in 1793 by the merchant Pavel Sazikov, and became supplier to the Imperial Court in 1837. The firm, which maintained factories in Moscow and St. Petersburg, became renowned for its high quality silverware, silver sculptures, cloisonné enamels and statuettes with national motifs. The firm exhibited several cups and centerpieces at the Great Exhibition of 1851 in London, and from 1846, held the Imperial Warrant. The unique charm of this punch service lies not only in its craftsmanship and historical relevance, but also in the inclusion of old drinking...

Striking Antique Rhinoceros Engraving, Buffon Hand-Coloured Print Amsterdam 1769
Striking Antique Rhinoceros Engraving, Buffon Hand-Coloured Print Amsterdam 1769

Striking Antique Rhinoceros Engraving, Buffon Hand-Coloured Print Amsterdam 1769

Located in Langweer, NL

Rare Antique Rhinoceros Engraving, Buffon Hand-Coloured Print Amsterdam 1769 Description: This striking 18th-century engraving of the Indian rhinoceros, titled Le Rhinoceros, comes from the Dutch edition of Buffon’s monumental natural history, published in Amsterdam by J.H. Schneider in 1769. Appearing as Plate VII in Tome XI, this is one of the most dramatic and desirable mammal plates in the entire series. The image was drawn by Jacques de Sève, the principal artist for Buffon’s Histoire Naturelle, and engraved by C.J. Fritsch, whose finely controlled linework captures the heavy folds, armour-like hide, and distinctive single horn of Rhinoceros unicornis with remarkable accuracy. Buffon’s description of the rhinoceros reflected the 18th century’s growing scientific curiosity about exotic species, and this plate reflects that fascination. The animal is shown standing solidly on a grassy bank against a pale sky and rocky cliff, a composition that emphasises both its mass and its rarity. De Sève’s rendering combines scientific observation with something of the romance and wonder that natural history imagery held for Enlightenment audiences. The armour-plated skin is depicted in sculptural relief through subtle cross-hatching, while carefully applied hand colouring enhances the deep greys, browns, and dusty pinks of the hide and landscape. As with all Schneider-edition plates, the colouring is richer, more transparent, and more refined than in many other continental versions of Buffon. This engraving is an excellent example of 18th-century copperplate technique. The plate mark is clearly visible, the impression strong, and the proportions generous, with wide margins characteristic of the Amsterdam edition. The sheet forms a beautiful standalone artwork but also pairs exceptionally well with other large-format Buffon subjects such as the elephant, camel, or buffalo plates...

16th-Century Indo-Portuguese Colonial Mother-of-pearl Gujarat Casket
16th-Century Indo-Portuguese Colonial Mother-of-pearl Gujarat Casket

16th-Century Indo-Portuguese Colonial Mother-of-pearl Gujarat Casket

Located in Amsterdam, NL

An exceptional Indo-Portuguese colonial mother-of-pearl veneered casket with silver mounts India, Gujarat, 2nd half of the 16th century, the silver mounts Goa or probably Lisbon Measures: H. 16 x W. 24.6 x D. 16.1 cm An exceptional Gujarati casket with a rectangular box and truncated pyramidal lid (with slopes on each side and a flat top) made from exotic wood, probably teak (Tectona grandis), covered with a mother-of-pearl mosaic. The tesserae, cut from the shell of the green turban sea snail (Turbo marmoratus, a marine gastropod) in the shape of fish scales, are pinned to the wooden structure with silver ball-headed nails. The casket is set on bracket feet on the corners. The masterfully engraved decoration of the silver mounts follows the most refined and erudite Mannerist repertoire of rinceaux and ferroneries dating from the mid-16th century. The high quality and refinement of the silver mounts and, likewise, the silver nails that replaced the original brass pins used to hold the mother-of-pearl tesserae in place indicate the work of a silversmith probably working in Lisbon in the second half of the 16th century. The Indian origin of this production, namely from Cambay (Khambhat) and Surat in the present state of Gujarat in north India, is, as for the last three decades, consensual and fully demonstrated, not only by documentary and literary evidence - such as descriptions, travelogues and contemporary archival documentation - but also by the survival in situ of 16th-century wooden structures covered in mother-of-pearl tesserae. A fine example is a canopy decorating the tomb (dargah) of the Sufi saint, Sheik Salim Chisti (1478-1572) in Fatehpur Sikri in Agra district in the state of Uttar Pradesh, north India. This is an artistic production, geometric in character and Islamic in nature, where usually the mother-of-pearl tesserae form complex designs of fish scales or, similar to the dishes also made using the same technique, with the thin brass sheets and pins, stylized lotus flowers. The truncated pyramidal shape corresponds, like their contemporary tortoiseshell counterparts also made in Gujarat, to a piece of furniture used in the Indian subcontinent within the Islamic world prior to the arrival of the first Portuguese. This shape, in fact, is very old and peculiar to East-Asian caskets, chests or boxes used to contain and protect Buddhist texts, the sutras. A similar chest is the famous and large reliquary chest from Lisbon cathedral that once contained the relics of the city's patron saint, Saint Vincent.
