Prince Henry's Naval and Land Battle during the Seven Years' War Engraved, 1667
Prince Henry's Naval and Land Battle during the Seven Years' War Engraved, 1667

Prince Henry's Naval and Land Battle during the Seven Years' War Engraved, 1667

Located in Langweer, NL

The engraving depicts the assault and capture of the Danish fortress Friderichsodde (now known as Fredericia) located on the island of Fyn. The scene, captured on October 24, 1657, vividly illustrates the Swedish main army's takeover under the command of General Carl Gustaf Wrangel. This historical event is meticulously documented in the artwork, which showcases not only the military action but also the strategic landscape and fortifications characteristic of the time. Erik Jönsson Graf von Dahlberg, the artist behind this work, was a prominent Swedish field marshal, architect, and fortress builder. Born in 1625 and passing in 1703, Dahlberg's contributions to military and architectural fields were significant. He was renowned for his detailed and artistically valuable drawings which served as the basis for large-scale copperplate engravings. These engravings are of substantial topographical and architectural historical importance as they provide a detailed visual account of Swedish territories during the era. In 1661, Dahlberg began work on his magnum opus—a comprehensive geographical and historical depiction of Swedish territories, which received royal privileges. His journey in 1667-1668 to Paris for the engraving of the initial plates reflects the international scope and ambition of his project. However, the work was intermittently paused when Dahlberg was tasked in 1674 with overseeing all Swedish fortress constructions, a role that significantly impacted his career and works. The project resumed and was published in 1684, highlighting a significant period of Swedish history and military achievements under his visual documentation. MORE ABOUT THE BATTLE: The image is an intricate engraving depicting a battle scene. Based on the details and the text in the cartouche, the scene illustrates a significant historical battle involving Prussian forces. The presence of multiple ships and extensive fortifications suggests a combined land and naval engagement. Key Features in the Engraving: 1. Land Battle: The forefront of the image shows numerous troops, artillery pieces, and cavalry in action, depicting the intensity and scale of the land combat. 2. Naval Elements: Ships in the background indicate that this battle had a naval component, which would have been crucial for controlling trade routes or strategic waterways. 3. Fortifications: Extensive fortifications, including bastions and protective walls, suggest a well-defended location, possibly a city or a significant stronghold. Historical Context: From the text, it appears the battle involves "Prinz Heinrich," referring to Prince Henry of Prussia, who was an influential military leader during the reign of his brother, Frederick the Great. Under Frederick’s rule, Prussia engaged in several key conflicts, including the Seven Years' War (1756-1763), which saw major battles across Europe and involved complex alliances. Given the level of detail and the era suggested by the style of ships and fortifications, the battle was of the significant engagements during the Seven Years' War, where Prince Henry played a critical role. His campaigns often involved maneuvering to protect Prussia from multiple fronts, including naval engagements in the Baltic. Interpretation: This engraving serves not only as a historical document but also as a piece of propaganda, likely glorifying the prowess and strategic capabilities of the Prussian military...

By Salimbeni, Giorgio Salimbeni

Located in Firenze, FI

Rectangular photo frame in 925/1000 silver with geometric design and fire-enameled with Chinese influence style. External cm. Internal 11.6 x 14.6 cm. 6 x 9. Weight gr. 194. Created in Art Deco style for Cartier USA in the 1980s, inspired by drawings by Louis Cartier from the early 1900s. Manufactured in Florence in the Salimbeni company headquarters with completely manual execution by artisan artists with high thickness plate and large reinforcements suitable to support numerous high-fire enamelling firings at approximately 750° < 800° C. It is a new object that has never been used but is considered vintage because it was built more than 20 years ago. The hallmarks struck to the underside of this fine box include: manufacturer's mark: 391FI metal mark fineness:925 Art Deco was also born in France and is the abbreviation of "Art Decoratif". With more decisive and geometric features than Art Nouveau, therefore more evident and "harder", with always contrasting and strong colours, Art Deco spread throughout the world, from Shanghai's China to the under construction New York and in various parts of Europe. Many artists and designers of the time dedicated themselves to the creation of drawings, paintings, objects for personal use and furniture, interior furnishings, entire buildings and skyscrapers, in this new style. Sandoz in Paris, Lalique with its crystals, Puiforcat with its silverware, Erté with its "ante litteram" fashion designs, Tiffany with its table lamps, Louis Cartier with its objects inspired by the Far East (hence the connection with Shanghai). Salimbeni was able to interpret and propose new objects inspired by Art Deco, in precious metals, semiprecious stones and fired enamels, when, exhibiting at jewelery exhibitions in the United States, and more precisely in New York, he made contact with Cartier buyers first, and also with Tiffany later, and for them he created objects in this style inspired by the original drawings of Louis Cartier, obtained from the buyer of the time, but with absolutely different and original designs and interpretations. Many of the objects produced by Salimbeni for Cartier in the United States had taken inspiration from famous Cartier objects belonging to famous people. An example of all is Mary Pickford's set consisting of a powder compact, cigarette case, pill case and evening handbag. About cooperation Salimbeni and Cartier. Our first meetings with the Cartier USA Company took place through the Giorgini Company, the first "Buying Office" set up in Florence immediately after the Second World War, which had the purpose of bringing together Florentine, and also Italian, producers with American buyers, who especially appreciated the artistic objects still manufactured by artisans who still took inspiration from the Italian Renaissance, using techniques handed down from generation to generation. Mrs. Gina Pestelli, wife of a Florentine retail jeweller, was in charge of contacts with Cartier USA, above all an employee, while her daughter, also for Giorgini, took care of the fashion that in those years was affirmed in Florence with the events of "Pitti ". With their help, we began to supply frames and boxes in sterling silver gold plated with malachite and other semi-precious stones. At the same time, the official buyer of Cartier, Mr. William Smith, began to appreciate and commission the first objects with fired enamels, a process of which we have always been specialists. In 1975 we began exhibiting at the prestigious New York Jewellery Association Show, which we participated in both the February and July editions, for a good 26 years until 2001. In New York in those years the "Art deco style" was still very much appreciated, still mindful of the beautiful early 20th century architecture of the great buildings such as the "Crysler" or the "Empire State". We then began to produce frames, boxes, evening bags, "objets de vertu" and other objects in "art deco style" which were very popular with Mr. Smith who gave us some photocopies of Louis Francois Cartier drawings to reproduce them. Thus, numerous cigarette cases, powder compacts, evening bags, frames and table boxes were created exclusively for Cartier USA which, at the time, had the prestigious "Silver Department" on the first floor of the Cartier store on Fifth Avenue. An evening bag, with matching cigarette case and powder compact, were redone on the design created for a gift given to Mary Pickford at the time. In a 1986 Cartier...

Detailed Engraving of The Greater Coat of Arms of Sweden, 1669
Detailed Engraving of The Greater Coat of Arms of Sweden, 1669

Detailed Engraving of The Greater Coat of Arms of Sweden, 1669

Located in Langweer, NL

This is an original detailed engraving of the greater coat of arms of Sweden, referred to in Swedish as "Svea rikes huvudvapen." The engraving was printed in Paris in 1669 according to Erik Vennberg. The coat of arms is elaborately detailed, with each escutcheon representing a component of the Swedish empire, including the arms of the House of Vasa among others. At the center, the shield is crowned with a regal crown, symbolizing the Swedish monarchy. Two regally posed lions, a common heraldic symbol of courage and strength, support the shield. The entire composition is topped with a mantle that looks to be teeming with various heraldic motifs, representing the unity and history of the Swedish nation. The intricacy of the work is indicative of the period's engraving techniques, with each line meticulously carved to bring out the opulence and intricate detail of the symbols. The coat of arms is a visual representation of the sovereignty and history of Sweden. The engraving is attributed to Jean Le Pautre, a notable French engraver from the 17th century, while the author of the work is Erik Dahlbergh...

1787 Engraved Portrait of King Henry IV - Lancastrian Sovereign

Located in Langweer, NL

An engraved portrait of Henry IV, King of England. Henry IV was the first English monarch from the Lancastrian branch of the Plantagenets and came to power after deposing his cousin Richard II in 1399. His reign was marked by the start of the 15-year civil strife known as the Wars of the Roses, numerous rebellions, and efforts to consolidate his power and legitimize his somewhat tenuous claim to the throne. The text mentions that the portrait is based on a picture at Hampton Court, which is a royal palace in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. Published as the act directs on June 18th, 1787, this engraving is part of the collection for "Harrington's Edition of Rapin's History of England." Henry IV's reign is notable for the rebellion led by the famous knight Henry Percy...

Regal Golden Thrush Perched, 18th Century Seligmann's Rare Bird Series, 1749
Regal Golden Thrush Perched, 18th Century Seligmann's Rare Bird Series, 1749

Regal Golden Thrush Perched, 18th Century Seligmann's Rare Bird Series, 1749

Located in Langweer, NL

This original antique hand-colored engraving by Johann Michael Seligmann is a representation of the Golden Thrush, derived from George Edwards' "Natural History of Uncommon Birds" and "Gleanings of Natural History." The artwork was part of Seligmann's own work, "Sammlung Verschiedener Auslandischer und Seltener Vogel," which translates to "Collection of Various Foreign and Rare Birds," published in 1749. The engraving contains several lines of text in different languages, likely identifying the bird and giving references to the work it was derived from. Here’s the transcription and translation of the visible text: - "Gallula Bengalensis." - This is Latin, likely the scientific name of the bird at the time, which translates to "Bengal Gallula" or "Bengal Thrush." - "N:o 80./VII.Heft." - This seems to be a reference to the plate number and the volume or issue number of the collection. - "Le Grive Dorée, Icterus." - In French, this means "The Golden Thrush, Icterus." 'Icterus' refers to the genus that includes birds commonly known as orioles, which are often characterized by their yellow and black plumage. - "Goldbrostel." - This could be an old or regional name for the bird in German, which might translate to something like "Gold Breast" referring to the bird's golden chest...
