It was purchased by a Private Dallas Collector at Sotheby’s New York Auction on 18th September 2008. Lot No. 74.
Sotheby’s operate a twice yearly auction of Southeast Asian Art & Antiquities in New York in the months of March and September.
This sale was titled “Modern & Contemporary Indian Art”.
The Lot consisted of a Group of 3 Watercolors by Babu Xavier, Paresh Maity and Ranjit Kurmi. (b.1960, b.1965, b.1970) Three Untitled Works.
Signed and dated ‘Paresh Maity ’02 lower right, watercolor and ink on paper. …. 5.6 x 3.6 (14 x 9 cm)”.
Exhibited: Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, Modern Indian Art, Cornell University, Ithaca, April 8 – June 11 2006.
The Provenance is given as: “Property of Private Maryland Collectors”.
The 3 watercolors carried an Auction estimate of USD 3,000 to USD 4,000 and Sold for USD 4,000 (not including Buyers Premium).
Allowing for inflation alone this would be over $7,000 in today’s value.
We have this watercolor by Paresh Maity and (listed separately) the Babu Xavier watercolor, but not the Ranjit Kurmi watercolor.
As an added bonus and proof of authenticity the painting still retains it’s original Sotheby’s Lot No. Label.
It has substantially increased in value over the years as a HIGHLY DESIRABLE piece from an exhibited and highly collected Modern Indian Master painter.

Here is a note about the artist from an essay by Britta Schroder: "Andrei Prolettski a contemporary artist, born in Siberia, attended the Surikov School of Art in his hometown, is exemplary in his exploration of the influence of Constructivist and Concrete Art’s legacy on contemporary art today. Although Prolettski is always on the move, always looking – he has traveled to India, Vietnam, and Africa; has lived in Germany, Switzerland, and France; and has explored Pop and Minimal Art, as well as the Russian avant-garde – his work still displays a striking similarity to the Russian pioneers of Constructivist and Concrete Art. This likeness does not merely stem from his embracing the clear formal language of geometry, but is rather the result of his taking constructivist orders and charging them with symbolic and universal meaning that goes far beyond art. The French curator and author David Rosenberg writes that “all art in Prolettski’s eyes is the attempt to find the relationship between our world and other parallel worlds, or between our dimension and other related dimensions.” He adds that the artist has “a clear interest in esotericism and occultism,” and that he is “steeped in classical culture and is fascinated by ancient religions, the art of the pyramids […] the cathedrals, […] alchemy and freemasonry.” The idea of a spiritual realm, a truth hidden behind things that takes the form of art, is something Prolettski shares with Kasimir Malevich, the painter of the famous “Black Square.” While the fact that Andrei Prolettski’s grandfather was an architect and his father a chemical engineer may be partly responsible for his pictures’ revealing an affinity with modernist industrial architecture, this is not the only reason. For one, his representations (sometimes planimetric, sometimes axonometric) of austere architectural structures enable him to transform a geometrical order (which he often drafts on scale paper) into a playing field of chromatic variations. Intricate, ethereal and highly textured, the abstract compositions of Japanese mosaic artist Toyoharu Kii reflect a sophisticated approach to the technical art of mosaic making. Classically trained in Florence, Italy, Kii creates his modern mosaics using traditional techniques and materials, including hand-cut Italian marble and Venetian smalti glass. Eschewing the figural in favor of the abstract, his mosaics rely on contrasts of pattern and form to convey complex themes and achieve visual harmony.
Toyoharu Kii’s latest body of work “Geophytes” continues themes of rebirth and renewal. A reference to plants that regrow from hidden elements beneath the earth’s surface, the series celebrates the resilience of the natural world. Each mosaic is imagined as a landscape that documents a history of environmental damage due to human activity, and the subsequent return of nature as a restorative force. Through the juxtaposition of patterns and the interplay of order and disorder, Kii creates man-made “images of destruction” and finds hope in the future by “reconstructing nature.”
In this mosaic entitled "Ghost (Big Wings)," Kii takes a more representational approach to his storytelling, creating figurative drawings out of thin lines of tesserae. The mosaic belongs to his “Ghost” triptych, wherein Kii uses “wings” to represent the presence of a heavenly being, the ghosts of past spirits or the presence of an angel or guardian. In “Ghost (Big Wings),” Kii mourns the extinction of many creatures due to environmental change and imagines their lonely spirits wandering the earth.
