Late 16th Century Flemish Historical Tapestry
Located in Port Washington, NY
This magnificent tapestry was woven in Flanders during the middle of the European Renaissance, in the late 1500s. At this time, Flanders was creating some of the best textiles in the world, and many of the rich wooded scenes with animals and hunting motifs began to appear. Tapestries subjects were thick forests and park lands, hunting scenes filled with deer, birds, exotic animals, and even mythological creatures. These were later referred to as Game Park tapestries...

17th Century, Flemish Painting Oil on Copper with Allegory by Pieter Van Lint
By Peter Van Lint
Located in IT
Pieter Van Lint (Antwerp, 1609-1690) Allegory of industriousness leading to peace and abundance Oil on copper; frame measures cm H 132 x W 159 x D 8, copper measures cm H 104 x W 130 Artwork signed (bottom center) "P.V. Lint F./ en A.B" The important and valuable painting, made of oil on copper, depicts the Allegory of industriousness that leads to peace and abundance. The work is signed in the bottom and center "P V Lint", or Pieter Van Lint (Antwerp, 28 June 1609 - Antwerp, 25 September 1690), famous Flemish painter and designer active in Antwerp in the second half of the seventeenth century. Van Lint elaborates a complex and articulated composition in which he inserts several figures also drawn from mythology to propose the allegorical message of industriousness that leads to peace and abundance. The artistic style of the author is characterized by meticulous realism and by the careful attention to detail and the rendering of the materials that make up the objects described. As we will see later, every detail represented within the work contains a symbolic and allegorical meaning that reinforces the message that already the same figures express. The remarkable dimensions of the copper support, not so infrequent in the artistic production of the artist, contribute to make the work of great value: Unfortunately, many of these artifacts have been lost because copper was often recovered in times of war and famine, and reused to obtain weapons and common tools. The copper foil proved to be ideal for oil painting because it constituted a non-absorbent support, rigid, smooth and characterized by the same reddish coloring that was used for the preparation of funds. The major production centers were Antwerp, Hamburg and Amsterdam, although the technique was widely used in Italy. The considerable cost of the material indicates a wealthy client, interested in possessing a valuable and durable work over time, this characteristic that the metal foil has more than the canvas. The painting is known to scholars. It is recorded in the catalog of the artist of the RKD Netherlands Institute for Art History (with measures 104 x 129 cm). He also appeared on the French antiques market...

Brussels Late 17th Century Tapestry Asia from a Four Continents Series 9'4 x 18
Located in New York, NY
Brussels late 17th century tapestry, "Asia" from a Four Continents series. Designed by Lodowijk van Schoor, Woven in the Workshop of J. van der Borcht I Size: 9'4 high x 18' wide. Wool, silk and metal thread pattern wefts This extremely colorful and attractive late Baroque Flemish tapestry with a popular iconography is the product of two important figures in 17th century Brussels weaving. J. van der Borcht I (circa 1650–1713) was a master weaver and tapestry entrepreneur who established a most distinguished family tapestry firm and was followed by J. van der Borcht II, Jasper van der Borcht, Pieter van der Borcht and Jan Frans van der Borcht, taking the operations into the mid18th century. Their wealthy patrons allowed the firm to engage some of the best designers and as a result the artistic quality, as well as the sheer technical execution, is always high. The Van der Borchts wove tapestry series (or single pieces) of Mythological Scenes, Months, Allegories, Armorials, Triumphs of the Gods, The Continents, as well as more down-to-earth genre scenes designed or inspired by David Teniers II or Teniers III. Their artist designers included, besides the Teniers, Jan van Orley, Augustin Coppens, Gerard Lairesse, Phillipe de Hondt, and the Antwerp-born Lodowijk van Schoor (circa 1650–1702), the designer of U-1362. Van Schoor was the successor of David Teniers III. He was the designer or co-creator of about fifteen sets of tapestries. His cartoons were utilized and copied in both the Northern and Southern Netherlands, and continued popular well into the 18th century. His style, especially in his later works, is more harmonious and refined than Teniers and he avoided genre scenes with peasants. Van Schoor sometimes collaborated with other artists, for example Lucas Aertschellinck (1620 – 1699) who specialized in landscape backgrounds as in the set of Mythological Scenes” woven circa 1700 in the Van der Borcht shop. He did not collaborate on this tapestry, Van Schoor’s figures are graceful and his color schemes vivid, in keeping with the best of contemporary Flemish tapestry. Van Schoor’s designs influenced artists working at great remove from Brussels, even so far as the Florentine workshop of Bernini and Demignot where a Van Schoor inspired “Four Continents” set was woven in the early 1720s. The “Four Continents” or “Four Parts of the World” was a popular theme in the 17th and 18th centuries for tapestry patrons. Each continent was identified by native peoples and animals: America (North and South together) by Indians and the Turkey bird...

17th Century Fine Brussels Tapestry, Silk Wool, Green, Blue, Red, Battle Scene
Located in Port Washington, NY
In the late 17th century, Brussels tapestry weavers achieved remarkable heights of artistry and technique, exemplified by a fine tapestry from circa 1680 that vividly depicts a dramatic battle scene. This masterpiece, crafted from a blend of silk and wool, showcases a rich array of colors—primarily blues, greens, and reds—that create a visually arresting narrative. The central motif of the tapestry is a dynamic and detailed battle scene, where the vibrant hues of blues, greens, and reds intertwine to convey the intensity and chaos of the conflict. The blues range from deep, somber tones that suggest a foreboding sky or tumultuous waters, to lighter, almost ethereal shades that might evoke a sense of movement or distance. Greens provide a lush, verdant backdrop, perhaps representing a forested terrain or rolling hills, and contrast strikingly with the reds that highlight the uniforms of the soldiers, the banners they bear, or the flashes of conflict. The tapestry’s execution in silk and wool adds a luxurious texture and depth to the image. The silk contributes a lustrous sheen to the colors, enhancing their vibrancy and making the reds particularly vivid. The wool, with its more subdued texture, provides a rich, tactile quality that adds to the overall grandeur of the piece. Framing this central battle tableau is an intricately detailed border that serves as both a decorative and narrative element. This border features a lively array of figures, fruits, and birds, rendered with the same meticulous attention to detail as the central scene. The figures, often depicted in an elegant and somewhat theatrical style, may include allegorical or mythological characters, adding layers of symbolism and context to the tapestry. The fruits, depicted in lush, vibrant colors, provide a contrast to the intensity of the battle, symbolizing abundance and prosperity. Birds, possibly rendered in mid-flight or perched gracefully, enhance the sense of movement and liveliness that permeates the artwork. The border’s detailed design serves to frame the central action, drawing the viewer's eye inward and providing a harmonious balance to the overall composition. It is not merely a decorative element but an integral part of the tapestry, enriching the narrative and adding to its visual complexity. In its entirety, this Brussels tapestry from the late 17th century stands as a testament to the skill and artistry of its creators. Its use of color, texture, and detailed border elements reflects the opulence and sophistication of the period, making it a significant example of the era's weaving artistry and a captivating portrayal of historical and artistic grandeur. The Battle of Cannae: Hannibal's Masterstroke The Battle of Cannae, fought in 216 BC during the Second Punic War, is one of the most celebrated and studied military engagements in history. The conflict took place between the forces of Carthage, led by the brilliant general Hannibal Barca, and the Roman...

Oil on Canvas "the Prohibited Reading" After Karel Ooms
Located in Los Angeles, CA
A Large Continental Oil on Canvas "The Prohibited Reading " after Karel Ooms (Belgium, 1845-1900). This beautiful executed painting depicts a historical scene of an old man and a young woman who are huddled over a bible. The pair is gazing in apparent concern or alarm, over the old man's shoulder, towards something outside of the picture. The scene is likely set in the 16th or 17th century when Protestants were prosecuted, amongst others, for reading the bible in the vernacular, a practice prohibited by the Catholic Church at the time.
