Jesus Blessing the Children – Antique German Catholic Chromolithograph, c. 1890 This beautiful late 19th-century German chromolithograph depicts one of the most tender and beloved scenes in Christian iconography: Jesus blessing the children. Christ stands centrally in a serene pastoral landscape, gently extending his hands in a gesture of protection and compassion, while two children approach Him with trust and reverence. The soft light of the halo frames His head, reinforcing the sacred presence, while the surrounding greenery and distant buildings create a peaceful biblical setting. This image reflects the powerful theme from the Gospel of Matthew, “Let the little children come to me,” and was widely used in Catholic devotional culture for home altars, schools, and parish settings during the late Victorian period. The gentle facial expressions, flowing robes, and rich harmonious colors are all characteristic of high-quality German chromolithography from the late 19th century. Chromolithography allowed for exceptional depth of color and painterly effects, closely imitating oil painting. This example shows especially fine tonal transitions in the robes, sky, and landscape, as well as excellent detail in the figures and foliage. The overall visual impression is warm, calm, and deeply devotional, making this print particularly appealing to Catholic art collectors and religious interiors. Pieces of this type were often displayed in framed settings above prayer corners, in churches, or in Catholic family homes and have become increasingly collectible as surviving examples in good condition grow scarcer. Its subject matter gives it lasting spiritual and decorative appeal and makes it a timeless devotional artwork. CONDITION REPORT Good antique condition overall. Light even age toning to the paper, consistent with late 19th-century chromolithographs. Minor softening at the edges and faint handling traces visible upon close inspection. No major stains, no tears, and no restoration observed. The colors remain vibrant and well preserved. FRAMING TIPS This print would be beautifully enhanced with a classic gold-leaf or champagne-gilt wooden frame combined with a wide ivory or warm cream mat. For a more contemporary sacred interior, a soft walnut or dark oak frame with museum glass would provide excellent contrast and visual depth while keeping the devotional character intact. Chinese Peacock-Pheasant – Hand-Colored Bird Engraving by Edwards & Seligmann, c.1750–1776 This fine hand-colored engraving depicts the Chinese Peacock-Pheasant (Phasianus alis et caudâ oculatis), an exotic species admired in Europe for its ornate plumage. The bird is shown perched gracefully on a flowering branch, its feathers marked with striking blue and green eye-like spots. Decorative peonies frame the composition, enhancing the print’s ornamental character. The engraving bears multilingual titles: “Der chinesische Phasanenpfau” (German), “Le Paon-Phaisan de la Chine” (French), and the Latin classification Phasianus, alis et caudâ, oculatis. European Owls – Antique Hand-Colored Bird Engraving, Vogel IX, c.1800

Located in Langweer, NL

European Owls – Antique Hand-Colored Bird Engraving, Vogel IX, c.1800 This finely executed hand-colored engraving presents six European owl species arranged in comparative study, issued as Plate IX (Vogel IX / Oiseaux IX). The plate belongs to the late 18th–early 19th century tradition of scientific ornithology, in which birds were illustrated side by side to support identification, classification, and study. The owls depicted correspond to species recognized today as the Long-eared Owl (Asio otus), shown prominently with its upright posture and distinct ear tufts; the Tawny Owl (Strix aluco), represented in both its grey-brown form and its warmer rufous color morph; the Short-eared Owl (Asio flammeus), identifiable by its paler facial disc and reduced ear tufts; the small but expressive Little Owl (Athene noctua); and a larger, more powerfully built owl commonly identified as the Eurasian Eagle-Owl (*Bubo bubo*), included to demonstrate contrast in scale and form. Each bird is depicted perched on a branch against a neutral ground, allowing close observation of plumage texture, facial structure, and stance. The hand-applied coloring enhances the naturalistic effect, particularly in the subtle gradations of brown, grey, cream, and rust tones characteristic of owl plumage. The bilingual German and French headings reflect the international scholarly audience for whom such plates were produced during this period of expanding scientific exchange. Plates like this were originally issued in ornithological volumes intended for scholars, collectors, and educated amateurs. Today they are valued both for their scientific relevance and their decorative appeal. The balanced composition of six distinct species on a single sheet makes this print especially attractive to collectors of natural history, bird enthusiasts, and interior designers seeking refined, nature-inspired wall art. Condition report: Good condition. Original hand coloring. Noticeable age toning and patina throughout, with scattered foxing and light surface marks consistent with age. Minor edge wear and small discolorations visible. No modern restoration observed. Framing tips: This print is well suited to a classic museum-style presentation. A soft ivory or light beige mat will complement the aged paper and muted coloration, paired with a medium walnut, light oak, or ebonized frame depending on the desired contrast. UV-protective glazing is recommended to preserve the original hand coloring.
