Original Antique Print of Four Slow Worms and Legless Lizards by Bertuch, 1802

Located in Langweer, NL

Original Antique Print of Four Slow Worms and Legless Lizards by Bertuch, 1802 Original antique hand-colored copper engraving depicting four varieties of slow worms and snake-like legless reptiles, published in Friedrich Justin Bertuch’s celebrated “Bilderbuch für Kinder” in Weimar in 1802. The plate is titled “Amphibien XX / Amphibies XX” and depicts four elegantly intertwined specimens. Bertuch identifies them as the Common Slow Worm or Blindworm (Anguis fragilis), Short-bellied Slow Worm (Anguis ventralis), Flat-tailed Slow Worm (Anguis platura), and Variegated Slow Worm (Anguis variegata). At the time these unusual reptiles were commonly associated with snakes because of their elongated, limbless bodies. The familiar European slow worm, despite its snake-like appearance, is in fact a legless lizard. Bertuch records a remarkably international distribution for the animals illustrated on this plate, describing examples from Europe and the Old World, Carolina and Virginia, the East Indies and New Holland (Australia). The intertwined arrangement and strong original hand coloring give the plate considerable decorative appeal, with tones of green, yellow, brown, black and gray. The engraving bears the inscription “Jacob Hauer Schmuzer” at lower right. Friedrich Justin Bertuch (1747–1822) was a German publisher, writer and patron of the arts. His monumental “Bilderbuch für Kinder” (Picture Book for Children) was one of the great illustrated educational encyclopedias of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Published in Weimar from 1790 onward, it contained hundreds of finely engraved and hand-colored plates covering natural history, geography, science, technology, costumes and mythology. Creator: Friedrich Justin Bertuch (1747–1822) Engraver: Jacob Hauer Schmuzer Source: Bilderbuch für Kinder Plate: Amphibien XX / Amphibies XX Place of Publication: Weimar, Germany Date of Manufacture: 1802 Period: Early 19th Century Style: Neoclassical – In the Period of Medium: Original hand-colored copper engraving on paper Condition: Good. Aztec & Early Mexican Costumes, Set of 2 Antique Prints, 1500–1525 This striking pair of early 20th-century costume plates offers a vivid and historically valuable depiction of Aztec and early Mexican dress during the 16th century. Illustrated by Max Tilke and published by Ernst Wasmuth A.G. in Berlin, these prints belong to one of the most respected costume‐historical series of the period. Tilke was known for his meticulous research and his ability to translate ethnographic sources into richly detailed, accurate visual reconstructions. These two plates are among the most vibrant and desirable in the entire publication. Plate 144 presents warriors and nobles in full ceremonial and military attire. Jaguar warriors, eagle warriors, officers, and elite fighters are shown with their distinctive feathered headdresses, painted shields, quilted cotton armor (ichcahuipilli), and symbolic iconography referencing Aztec cosmology and rank. The colors and patterns reflect authentic codex sources, making the plate particularly valuable to historians of pre-Columbian culture. Plate 145 focuses on social classes and civilian dress from the late pre-Hispanic and early colonial period. Market vendors, weavers, young nobles, priests, and high-ranking women appear wearing garments such as tilmas, breechcloths, embroidered huipiles, feathered adornments, and body paint. Together, the two plates offer a rare, well-documented overview of everyday and ceremonial dress from Mexico around 1500–1525. The printing quality is exceptionally fine, with rich color lithography capturing the tonal variations of feathers, textiles, and painted patterns. These plates make a powerful impression when framed and are well suited for collectors of ethnographic art, museum-oriented interiors, historians of Mesoamerica, and designers seeking authentic cultural references. It is now uncommon to find both Mexican plates...

Decorative Botanical Engraving of Sedum & Succulent Plants, 1737
Decorative Botanical Engraving of Sedum & Succulent Plants, 1737

Decorative Botanical Engraving of Sedum & Succulent Plants, 1737

Located in Langweer, NL

Decorative Botanical Engraving of Sedum & Succulent Plants, 1737 Description: An original 18th-century botanical plate from Johann Wilhelm Weinmann’s celebrated “Phytanthoza Iconographia,” one of the most ambitious and visually striking botanical publications of the early 18th century. This finely detailed plate, numbered 93, depicts several varieties of Sedum and related succulent plants, including stonecrop and houseleek. The plants are presented with remarkable botanical detail, showing fleshy leaves, flowering stems, delicate blossoms and exposed root systems. Soft shades of green, yellow and pink give the composition an especially decorative quality. Johann Wilhelm Weinmann (1683–1741) was a German apothecary and botanist. His monumental “Phytanthoza Iconographia,” published in Regensburg between 1737 and 1745, contained more than 1,000 botanical plates and was particularly innovative for its use of color printing combined with hand finishing. The illustrations are today admired both as important works of botanical documentation and as highly decorative examples of 18th-century natural history illustration. Artist / Maker: Johann Wilhelm Weinmann (1683–1741) Publication: Phytanthoza Iconographia Plate: No. 93 Date: circa 1737–1745 Medium: Color-printed mezzotint and engraving with hand coloring Condition: Good antique condition overall, with expected signs of age including light toning, occasional spotting, minor marks and small imperfections to the paper. Old Baroque Pulpit Design with Corinthian Column and Staircase Plan, ca.1740
Old Baroque Pulpit Design with Corinthian Column and Staircase Plan, ca.1740

Old Baroque Pulpit Design with Corinthian Column and Staircase Plan, ca.1740

Located in Langweer, NL

Architectural design with the central elements depicted in the engraving: the Baroque design of the pulpit, the inclusion of a Corinthian column which suggests a classical influence, and the presence of a staircase plan indicating the approach to the pulpit. Dating approximately between 1740 and 1760. The artist responsible for this design is Franz Xaver Habermann, and it was published by Johann Georg Hertel I in Augsburg. The design shows a richly decorated pulpit and archway, typical of the Rococo style, which is known for its elaborate ornamentation, asymmetry, and curves. This image is one of four numbered plates related to this work. The detail in the engraving is meticulous, showcasing the elaborate aesthetic that characterized much of the European art and architecture during the mid-18th century. Franz Xaver Habermann (1721–1796) was a German engraver and etcher who was active during the 18th century, a period marked by the Rococo style. Although not as widely known as some of his contemporaries, Habermann contributed significantly to the graphic arts during his time. Habermann's work often featured architectural designs, such as the intricate pulpit depicted in the image you've provided. He was skilled in creating prints that detailed elaborate decorative schemes and architectural fantasies, which were popular during the Rococo period. His creations were known for their intricate details and the fluidity of their lines, capturing the lightness and ornamental excesses that characterized Rococo design. Johann Georg Hertel I, who published Habermann's work, was part of a notable family of engravers and publishers in Augsburg, a city that was an important center for publishing in Europe at the time. The Hertel family played a significant role in disseminating artistic and architectural designs through their publications. While specific details about Habermann’s life and training may not be as well-documented as those of major artists of his time, his surviving works suggest that he was a highly skilled engraver who had mastered the Rococo style, contributing to the spread of this aesthetic through his printed works. His designs would have influenced the tastes of the period, both within Germany and across Europe, where the appetite for such elaborate designs was significant. More in detail about this engraving: This engraving features a detailed representation of a Baroque-style preacher's pulpit, intricately designed and placed upon a Corinthian column, demonstrating the grandeur of religious architecture during the Baroque period. The pulpit is richly adorned with elaborate scrollwork, acanthus leaves, and possibly religious iconography, all common elements in Baroque ecclesiastical design. A significant feature of this print is the inclusion of architectural details such as the Corinthian column base, known for its ornate capital with acanthus leaves and scrolls, which supports the pulpit above. This classical element signifies stability and order, providing a stark contrast to the exuberant decoration of the pulpit itself. To the right of the pulpit, there's a tall, slender window filled with panes that could either be clear or stained glass, framed by an ornate window arch...
