BergdorfGoodman Corseted Strapless Quintessential 1980s Costa Little Black Dress
By Bergdorf Goodman, Victor Costa
Located in Chicago, IL
Made for the luxury standards of New York's trendsetting Bergdorf Goodman, this timeless quintessential corseted, shirred, ruched and topstitched "little black dress" was produced by Victor Costa in the 1980s. It was the first U.S. luxury department store to order exclusive special-occasion dresses from this Texan designer and subsequently to give him a namesake in-store boutique. He soon became associated with the feminine glamorous gowns worn by "PYT" (Costa-speak for pretty young things) on the Dallas-based television-series "Dynasty", which idealized status-conscious Texan women mostly via fashion and drama involving actress Joan Collins. With a strapless curvaceous sweetheart neckline, narrow sinuous folds of crepe silk-blend jersey cross diagonally below the decollete, while contrasting vertical ruching defines the seven bones of the invisible corset structure that is fully lined on the interior.
Under the bust in front below the empire-like peaked high waist, the fitted tucked underlay of the cocktail dress wraps around the back to end as an overlay in front, where the opening on the left side extends to the bodice like a discreet slit. The freely hanging bias-cut overlay in front is gathered underneath each breast for a forgiving central drape that adds additional curves to make the wearer's torso underneath appear in sleek condition despite a potentially less than ideal figure.
The dress closes with a concealed zipper in the center of the back, with exterior hook-and-eye fastening to narrow the waist. There is a second concealed hook-and-eye fastener at the top of the zipper.
Although the only remaining tag is the Costa/Bergdorf label, it is a contemporary U.S.-size 8, which will also suit a large-busted size 6 or a svelte size 10.
Now 88 years old, Victor Costa (b.1935) became widely known by the 1980s in The States for perfecting affordable luxurious gowns that could be mistaken for one-of-a-kind flamboyant designs by foreign couturiers Christian Lacroix, Arnold Scaasi, Oscar de la Renta or Valentino Garavani. Early on, the avid female sketcher...

CommeDesGarcons 1999 RunwayLook12 BiasCut TranslucentSatin SalmonPink Maxi Dress
By Rei Kawakubo Comme Des Garcons, Comme des Garçons
Located in Chicago, IL
Rei Kawakubo designed this translucent salmon-pink bias-cut satin sleeveless maxi dress evening gown for her brand Comme des Garcons, which debuted on a model at Paris Fall Fashion Week as "Look 12" among the Vogue photo-coverage of her Spring/Summer 2000 collection (see our last photo of the ensemble).
The unusual V-neck shape creates a deep central drape in the front of the unlined dress that prevents the synthetic semi-transparent fabric from clinging to the torso. To continue to flatter the curvy shape of the lower body like the bias-cut enables, such as while walking, Kawakubo added an additional piece of fabric with a circling angular seam that rises from the wider hem.
With the exception of the brand tag, all others were cut off by the sole owner to eliminate bulk and visibility through the dress. If the buyer would prefer, the fabric can be made shinier and completely smooth with professional pressing.
If the buyer would like to create a layered ensemble with this gown as seen on the runway, we have other textural colorful tops to choose from with over-dyed unique appliques from this same Spring/Summer 2000 collection. However, we think our backless-mannequin photos show that this minimal dress...

By Rei Kawakubo Comme Des Garcons, Comme des Garçons
Located in Chicago, IL
1997 arguably marked the pinnacle of Japanese Comme des Garcons founder and fashion designer Rei Kawakubo's collection debuts when she introduced deconstructed asymmetrical "lumps and bumps" padding and transparent tops that both deformed and revealed female bodies. For her Fall/Winter 1997 "Adult Punk" collection, she debuted this transparent ecru organza pullover dinner jacket or evening oversized blouse, whose bodice and lower long sleeves are color-blocked with white textured silk-blend appliques and lined in white tulle that is hand-sheered above the outer hem. A recent Parisian exhibition at Musee de la Mode, "1997 Fashion...

CommeDesGarcons 1997 Lumps&Bumps RunwayLook11 2Piece SheerTop & DrapedSkirtDress
By Rei Kawakubo Comme Des Garcons, Comme des Garçons
Located in Chicago, IL
In Comme des Garcons Founder Rei Kawakubo's iconic Spring/Summer 1997 collection titled "Body Meets Dress, Dress Meets Body", which was nicknamed lumps and bumps, this navy two-piece set of transparent pullover long-sleeve net tulle blouse and convertible translucent bias-cut draping long skirt or tube dress debuted on the runway in "Look 11" among the Vogue coverage (partly concealed under a navy open robe). Significantly, our pair repeats the fashion show's "Look 1" theme--which was interpreted by TheMet museum curators as "clothing-absence/body-presence"--with a see-through symmetrical top revealing breasts and a bias-cut draped asymmetrical skirt that clings to body curves. Variations of this silhouette were modeled in navy, or red like our primary photo. Many had net-encased organ-shaped down pillows freely inserted into net underlays by the designer to shockingly distort the silhouettes with impossible feminine curves, such as with two kidney-shapes on the back or a tube across the front of the hips.
This set will likewise accommodate such padding that is apparent in the Vogue photos...

René-Xavier Prinet
French, 1861-1946
La Plage de Cabourg
Oil on canvas
18 by 31 in, w/ frame 25 ¼ by 38 ¾ in
Signed lower right
Coming from a family of notable Franche-Comté (Prinet notaries from Luxeuil-les-Bains), René-Xavier Prinet is the son of Henry Prinet (born in 1824), imperial prosecutor in Vitry -the-François, and the brother of Gaston Prinet, diplomat. Appointed to Paris, Henry Prinet lives with his family on rue Bonaparte just a stone's throw from the Ecole des Beaux - Arts, to which René - Xavier seemed destined. His father, an amateur painter (a Madonna with Child is kept in the church of Suaucourt, Haute-Saone), is willing that his son acquires an artistic training and he makes him receive the advice of the painter Louis Charles Timbal, strong employee for decorations of the churches of Paris.
By his maternal grandmother, René-Xavier Prinet is related to the painters of the Court Hubert Drouais (1699-1767) and François-Hubert Drouais (1727-1775).
Around 1880, he began his education as a painter by being admitted into the studio of the painter Jean-Léon Gérôme. He stayed with the master until 1885. He then became associated with the Frankish painters Georges and Lucien Griveau, Antonio de La Gandara, classmates at the Beaux-Arts, Louis-Auguste Giradot, Felix Desgranges and Jules-Alexis Muenier. At the same time, he studies at the Julian Academy.
His picture Jesus Child is his first painting accepted at the Salon of French Artists in 1885. He exhibited at this Salon until 1889.
At that time he became associated with a group of young painters called the Black Band : Lucien Simon, André Dauchez, René Ménard and Charles Cottet.
He became a professor at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he created and directed the first workshop for women artists.
In 1891, he received an order from the State for the decoration of the Palace of the Legion of Honor: The Four Seasons. His sketches are accepted. The same year, he exhibited in Paris at the Durand-Ruel gallery with Albert Besnard , Jules-Alexis Muenier and Henri Fantin-Latour.
One of his most famous works, The Kreutzer Sonata, is exhibited in 1901 at the exhibition "Contemporary French Art" in Stuttgart where it is sold to the Prince Regent of Bavaria .
The year 1904 sees the creation, with Lucien Simon and Antoine Bourdelle , of the workshops of the Académie de la Grande Chaumière.
In 1909, he illustrated Rene Boylesve's Young Girl. In 1913, he was named secretary of the National Society of Fine Arts. He travels to the United States as a jury member at the Carnegie Institute exhibition in Pittsburgh. His paintings The Cavaliers and Interior dining room are presented on this occasion.
He frequented the Sundays of Besnard, rue Guillaume-Tell.
Prinet painted the reception of Albert Besnard at the Academy of Fine Arts in 1912. In 1916, he painted the painter Felix Desgranges in his family room in Luxeuil with the Australian artist Bessie Davidson...
