"Holiday", Abstract Drypoint Etching and Aquatint, Numbered and Signed

By Richard Jacobs

Located in Detroit, MI

"Holiday" is a work that displays Richard Jacobs early Balinese influence. This abstract work made with drypoint etching manifests a layer of depth and contrast that is achieved through an Indonesian technique of drawing the lines of the resist or printing it with a copper stamp that allows an artisan to selectively color the work through the soaking process. "Holiday" is exemplary of this earlier aquatint process before Jacobs would go on to apply a diversity of colors to his work. The print is 39 x 29 inches and is signed and numbered from an edition of 30 by the artist. Numbered edition may not necessarily be number 17 as there are multiple prints in the possession of Collected Detroit...

"Vernors & Oreos" Treats for Stevie Wonder, Still-Life, Oil, Colorful

Located in Detroit, MI

SALE ONE WEEK ONLY “Vernors and Oreos” is a clever colorful piece by Richard Wilson that is full of significant meaning for native Detroiters. The beverage and cookies are specific treats for many people in Detroit and Michigan, but for Stevie Wonder in particular who is also a native Detroiter. The soda is produced and has been manufactured in the city of Detroit since 1862 by the Vernors Co. The story goes that prior to his concerts, Stevie Wonder, always requested that Vernors' Ginger Ale and Oreos be provided in his dressing room. Wilson has a great admiration for Stevie Wonder and as a gift to the city of Detroit he painted a mural of Stevie Wonder on an outside wall of the Music Hall. The “Ginger Ale and Oreos” painting...

"Queen" African American Female Portrait, Rich Browns & Lavenders, Sculptural

By Henry Heading

Located in Detroit, MI

“Queen” is a stunning iconic portrait of a young woman coming into the full flower of her beauty and developing power. She is set in a sculptural scene of softly rounded forms surrounded by blues, pinks and lavenders along with flowers and a small hummingbird. There is a quiet power and energy in the young woman as she appears to be on the verge of movement. That she is visually beautiful is actually beside the point for Henry has managed to capture in paint the inner beauty flowing from her presence. Henry says that, “Painting is like breathing for me. I do so daily and appreciate my gift and ability. Perfection drives me as I create each piece. It must be unique. It must stand out, and is not complete until that special quality is achieved in my eyes.” Being able to create is an essential part of my life. It is an extension of my innermost thoughts and imagination. My primary focus of art is realism--using oils and acrylics. Occasionally, I switch mediums and design and build three dimensional pieces. Working mixed mediums, I use various wood, metal and paint, thus allowing me to achieve the visual effects I am looking for. Many of my pieces have been derived from my attraction to Art Deco and Ethnic designs. I am not satisfied until each piece, regardless of the medium or size, has reached the highest possible level of aesthetic quality and craftsmanship I can give it. I have enjoyed creating art since childhood. While a student at Martin Luther King Jr. high school in Detroit, I created and presented a portrait to then Mayor Coleman A. Young. A scholarship from Center for Creative Studies now the College for Creative Studies afforded me the opportunity to work towards and receive a BA in Fine Arts. Faculty and graduates of CCS include Richard Jerzy, Harry Bertoia, Doug Chaing (currently director of Lucas Film), Stephen Dinehart (game maker, writer, designer connected with The David Lynch Foundation), Tyree Guyton (international artist), Herb Babcock, Jerome Feretti, Kevin Siembieda (writer, designer and publisher of role-playing games), Renee Radell, Philip Pearlstein, Charles McGee (nationally recognized African American sculptor of animal and dancing spirits), Philip Pearlstein (2000 Honorary Doctorate, Modern Realism style), John Louis Krieger (American Modern), William Girard (American Modern), and Charles Culver. Mr. Heading understands the joy found in art and how it affects a young person's heart. He has shared his love for art as a mentor/teacher at the Virgil L. Carr Center in Detroit, Michigan. Students not only grew in their art experience, but also exhibited at the Ann Arbor Art Fair. Winning the 2013 MI Great Artist Competition was an honor for Mr. Heading. He is thankful to Park West Gallery owner Albert Scaglione and Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson for the opportunity. Mr. Heading has been featured on ASPIRE TV, shows at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, the National Conference of Artists and other numerous galleries. In addition, he is a book illustrator. His murals create a beautiful focal point and conversation piece on the walls of homes, churches and health care facilities. His art and furniture is enjoyed and treasured by collectors across the United States and Canada. Kohei Suzuki, the former Mayor of Toyota City, Japan has a box designed by Henry. His first attempt at mosaic tile was creating a Tiger sculpture to benefit the Detroit Tigers...

"Femme de Tagmout Chantant L'Ahwas" translated to "Woman Of Tagmout (Singing the Ahwash)" is plate number 44 in Jean Besancenot's stunning portraits and depictions of the people of Morocco from his series "Costumes du Maroc" ("Costumes of Morocco). The woman depicted here is veiled and draped and in the midst of singing the "ahwash", a traditional song and dance from the regions of southern Morocco, such as Tagmout, and which has some roots in the pre-Islamic cultures of the Amazigh (also known as the Berbers) and is performed primarily by the Shilha, a sub-group of the Berbers. Breathtaking John Glick "Scalloped Basket" Glazed Stoneware Reduction Fired
Breathtaking John Glick "Scalloped Basket" Glazed Stoneware Reduction Fired

Breathtaking John Glick "Scalloped Basket" Glazed Stoneware Reduction Fired

By John Glick 1

Located in Detroit, MI

"Scalloped Basket" is a stoneware piece with the decorative layer of the rich toned glazes and markings that John was so well-known for. He was, also, known for the undulating lip lines on his exquisite pieces. The basket portion is shaped with gentle curves and a sculptural handle. Each piece that John produced was unique. He was seduced by the effects of the reduction kiln, which decreased the levels of oxygen during firing, inducing the flame to pull oxygen out of the clay and glazes changing the colors of the glazes depending on their iron and copper content. In this way he achieved the rich gradients of ochre and umber and variations in stippling and opacity. This particular "basket" also has the cool blues and grays that contrast with the umber. It is signed and stamped on the bottom. John was an American Abstract Expressionist ceramicist born in Detroit, MI. Though open to artistic experimentation, Glick was most influenced by the styles and aesthetics of Asian pottery—an inspiration that shows in his use of decorative patterns and glaze choices. He has said that he is attracted to simplicity, as well as complexity: my work continually reflects my re-examination that these two poles can coexist… or not, in a given series. Glick also took influences from master potters of Japan, notably Shoji Hamada and Kanjrio Kawai, blending their gestural embellishments of simple forms with attitudes of Abstract Expressionism. He was particularly drown to the work of Helen Frankenthaler whose soak-stain style resonated with Glick’s multi-layered glaze surfaces, which juxtaposed veils of atmospheric color with gestural marks and pattern. He spent countless hours developing and making his own tools in order to achieve previously unseen results in his work with clay and glaze. Glick’s “Plum Tree Pottery...

"THE MANTEL SERIES" John Glick Stoneware Objets d'Art Intimate Indoor/Outdoor

By John Glick 1

Located in Detroit, MI

SALE ONE WEEK ONLY John Glick is well-known for his beautifully rendered functional pieces of art. His decorative pieces, especially his large pots, are breathtakingly powerful objects. Glick's creative genius, however, is most exquisitely shown in this unique grouping of objets d'art. The Wall Hanging has a lovely classical scroll shelf. The objets on the shelf include an apple and pear - both fruits frequently rendered by artists from the Dutch Masters to Cezanne because of their perfectly balanced shape and rich colors. In addition is a small Greek or Roman styled dish used as an oil lamp. The other three objets are mysterious twisted tube-like organic shapes. John Glick, at one of his richest, creative bests. The objets are of various sizes, movable and can be displayed as desired. The size given is the overall size of both pieces and the objets d'art. "The works in John Glick’s “Mantel Series” are still life tableaux comprised of ordinary, yet intriguing objects that imply a history of people interacting with objects and each other over time. Imagine a lettr or poem from a loved one, once read, tucked among other fabourite things for safekeeping. Or a salty treasure carried in a dampened pocket and later deposited on a cottage shelf to dry, crackle and change. In essence, the mantels hold suggestive collections in which most people can find a part of themselves a link to a personal memory and a connection to a lost moment in time. His body of work, The Mantel Series, was partially inspired by a memory of a salt box that hung near his grandmother’s kitchen wood stove. For Glick, the unassuming little box, with its pleasing enigmatic shape and wooden lid, conjured pleasant boyhood memories, nostalgia for home and hearth, and vivid awareness of history. Upon his wall-based mantels, the artist placed a well-honed repertoire of distinct objects, all deftly crafted of clay, that become characters in his unspoken drama, each form playing off the others in the ensemble.” Plum Tree Pottery...

Located in Detroit, MI

SALE ONE WEEK ONLY John Piet's "Untitled" from 1974 is a welded sculpture with two opposing forms connected by a swoop of steel. Piet's sculptural work explores the tension between contending elements, and other works investigating the relationship of heaven and earth. The form shown here in Untitled appears similar to the form in his 1975 large-scale work The Entrance currently located at the entrance of Harmonie Park in Detroit. The abstract drawing in the pictures above is part of the sculpture offer. The drawing was a study, work-in-progress, as John "worked out" the details of the final sculpture. John Piet was born in Detroit on American Street, and was educated at the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts (now named College for Creative Studies). College for Creative Studies (formerly Center for Creative Studies) faculty and graduates include Richard Jerzy, Harry Bertoia, Doug Chaing (currently director of Lucas Film), Stephen Dinehart (game maker, writer, designer connected with The David Lynch Foundation), Tyree Guyton (international artist), Herb Babcock, Jerome Feretti, Kevin Siembieda (writer, designer and publisher of role-playing games), Renee Radell, Philip Pearlstein, Charles McGee (nationally recognized African American sculptor of animal and dancing spirits), Philip Pearlstein (2000 Honorary Doctorate, Modern Realism style), John Louis Krieger (American Modern), William Girard (American Modern), Charles Culver, Henry Heading, Hughie Lee-Smith and Joseph Wesner.
