"Brackenridge Park" San Antonio Texas.
By Jose Arpa
Located in San Antonio, TX
Jose Arpa (1858-1952) San Antonio Artist Image Size: 18 x 24 Frame Size: 21 x 27 Medium: Oil Circa 1920s "Brackenridge Park" San Antonio Texas. Biography Jose Arpa (1858-1952) Born in Carmona, Spain, José Arpa y Perea was known as "The Colorist Painter" of figures and landscapes, especially in Texas where he brought a fresh approach to San Antonio painting in his bright, sunlit local scenes. He was also an etcher, illustrator, and muralist as well as an art teacher, and he started and ended his career in Spain. His subjects include the Grand Canyon of Arizona. Please visit our 1stdibs storefront to view more of our fabulous goodies. He began his art study as the pupil of Eduardo Cano de la Pena at the Academy of Fine Arts in Seville and then spent six years in Rome followed by extensive travel through Africa and Europe. His reputation was solid enough that the Spanish government sent four of his paintings as part of the exhibition to the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. In 1894, as an illustrator, he accompanied a Spanish army expedition to Morocco where the Spanish had been defeated by Rifi tribesmen. In the mid-1890s, he was brought to Mexico City, reportedly by a special Mexican naval vessel, to head the Academy of Fine Arts, but declined the position once he understood the responsibilities. Instead he joined one of his Spanish schoolmates and went to his home in Puebla, Mexico, where his use of bright colors earned him the name of "Sunshine Man." He became close to the children of this man, and in 1903, accompanied them as a guardian to school in San Antonio. After twenty years of traveling in Spain, Mexico, the Southwest, and South America, Arpa settled in 1923 in San Antonio, Texas, where he became Director of the San Antonio Art School and painted bright, sun-filled landscapes. He taught landscape and portrait painting and was exceedingly prolific, and several San Antonio collectors accumulated large numbers of his works. Among his close artist friends were Robert and Julian Onderdonk, Tom and Joe Brown, and Charles Simmang. They were members of a San Antonio group who painted together and called themselves the "Brass Mug...

Please expect framing time between 3-5 weeks. From the estate of Ruth Friedmann Opper & Jerry Opper. Ruth was the daughter of Bauhaus artist, Gustav Friedmann. San Francisco Abstract Expression A free-spirited wave of creative energy swept through the San Francisco art community after World War II. Challenging accepted modes of painting, Abstract Expressionists produced highly experimental works that jolted the public out of its postwar complacency. Abstract Expressionism resulted from a broad collective impulse rather than the inspiration of a small band of New York artists. Documenting the interchanges between the East and West Coasts, she cites areas of mutual influence and shows the impact of San Francisco on the New York School, including artists such as Mark Rothko and Ad Reinhardt. San Francisco's Beat poets...

"Gamblers", Ming Wai, Original Oil on Canvas, 36x48, Color Figurative Abstract
By Ming Wai
Located in Dallas, TX
Wai Ming is a Chinese Asian Modern & Contemporary painter who was born in 1938. In this colorful abstract painting, women are huddled in a circle gambling and betting. Wai Ming's love for art flourished and he developed his drawing techniques without any art education, just painting what he saw. In the 1960s, Ming found representation in Hong Kong and also took the unusual step of opening his own gallery to display his work. His primary interest was to capture images of life in fishing villages, or 'fish-folk', who have retained traditional Chinese culture, his work was at home with the sensibilities of many art buyers in Hong Kong, and so was able to find some initial success. Crossing the ocean in his mid-30s, Wai Ming arrived in San Francisco from Hong Kong in 1974. There, he experienced initial resistance from galleries and the official art world for a variety of reasons but was ultimately embraced by dealer Jack Swanson...

Modern Orange, Brown, Yellow, and Black Geometric Abstract Pattern Painting
By John Little
Located in Houston, TX
Modern orange, brown, yellow, and black geometric abstract composition by textile designer John Little. The work was created as a proposed design for a wallpaper and features the original color codes in the front lower left corner. Currently hung in a solid black frame with a large white margin. Dimensions Without Frame: H 35.5 in. x W 33.5 in. Artist Biography: A painter and textile designer, John Little is best known for gestural works filled with boldly explosive color that reflect the influences of his teacher Hans Hofmann and for his involvement in the Abstract Expressionist movement in East Hampton, where he moved in the late 1940s. In East Hampton Little congregated with Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, and the other artists who were the leading innovators in the New York School. John Little was born in Sanford, Alabama. He left home at the age of fourteen to become an artist, and moved to Buffalo, New York, in 1923. After spending a year working as a stevedore on the docks to save money, he enrolled at the Buffalo Fine Arts Academy and developed an interest in singing. In 1927 he moved to New York City where he continued his vocal work and studied operatic literature. He also became involved in textile design, opening his own store in 1920, called John Little Studios: Fabric and Wallpaper Design. He ran the store until 1950. In 1933 John Little resumed his painting studies at the Art Students League in New York under the guidance of George Grosz (1893-1959). The following year he made his first visit to East Hampton, Long Island, which he would eventually call home. Later in the decade, he traveled to Paris where he became familiar with European modernism. On his return to America, he taught textile design at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. He hired Josephine Watkins to work for him; she later became his wife. Little's textile store and teaching job gave him a financial security that was rare during the Depression, and he never found it necessary to find employment with the Works Progress Administration. At the end of the decade, John Little studied with Hans Hofmann (1880-1966) in New York and Provincetown. Little was greatly influenced by Hofmann, particularly by his views on color theory. In 1942 John Little joined the Navy as an aerial photographer. In the late 1940s he purchased a rundown house on Three Mile Harbor...

By Alberto Saucedo
Located in San Antonio, TX
Alberto Saucedo (Born 1960) Texas Artist (Sculptor/Painter) 21.5 inches tall Medium: Bronze 2016 "The Enigma of The Egg" Alberto was born in 1960. He was raised in Mexico City. Alberto Saucedo began his career as self-taught artist who demonstrated at a young age a remarkable talent and passion for art that eventually at seventeen years of age led him to formal studies at Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and later on enrolled at San Diego City College. There he focused on Commercial Art and Interior Design. It was there, where he evolved his unique personal style. It was also at this time that he discovered the work of Master sculptor Francisco Zuñiga and studied sculpture with him. Sculpture subsequently became a major part of Saucedo’s work, and achieved his first real recognition in his field. Saucedo’s training has included a generous study of art history, where he incorporates his sensuous, spiritual and classical techniques, transforming it into a style that becomes evident in his work. Vendiendo Plátanos -Selling Bananas, Nahualá Guatemala, Oil , 18 x 12, Market
Located in Houston, TX
Vendiendo Platanos is a 18 x 12 oil on panel paininting by William Kalwick. This was done on site in Nahuala , Guatemala. A frame has been ordered for the painting. This Nahuala Coop, 100% women farmer produced washed Guatemala heirloom coffee features sweet, clean and bright aromas of hazelnut. The flavor is rich, with notes of chocolate, citrus and roasted nuts, finishing smooth and lingering. Nearly the entire population of the municipality is made up of ethnic K'iche' Maya who speak the K'iche' language. The population of the township is estimated to be between 50,000 and 85,000 individuals, about 10% of whom live in the head-town. Statistics vary widely because much of the township's territory and several large villages are also claimed by Nahualá' sister township, Santa Catarina Ixtahuacán. Kalwick’s paintings cover a wide range of subject matter. However, he is best known for his Guatemalan market scenes, Guatemalan figurative work, and portraits. Recent portrait commissions include Harold Hook, retiring CEO of American General Corp.; Reese Jones, international golf course designer; and Paul Merriman, retiring CEO of Hisco Corp. Kalwick was honored for the second time with a one-man show sponsored by the United States Embassy at the Museo Ixchel in Guatemala City. Southwest Art magazine featured Kalwick’s work on the cover and elaborated upon his style in an article titled “Guatemala Days.” He also was featured in Art of the West magazine . Kalwick’s portrait painting was featured in Southwest Art magazine . Kalwick has participated in many shows including the Masters of the American West at the Autry Museum in Los Angeles, California; the Prix de West...
