The group trekked for about 45 minutes and then the guides came up and this beautiful lion and lionesses. "Folle Soiree Musicale" by Gerard Valtier is an original oil on canvas that measures 47x47 inches. The impressionistic painting uses an array of bright colors to create a fun, musical image. The evening is young at a musical show in Paris. Ballerinas dance on stage to a man playing the piano and two violinists creating music of its time! Unlike Renoir or Cezanne, Valtier does not hesitate to use black as a true color, not one designed to soften or drain the pure color, as in the shadows. One will also appreciate the energetic work of the brush to describe the foliage or the luminous backgrounds irradiated with numerous vibrant colors. Valtier has had exhibitions throughout the world and has received many awards. He paints from his studio in Arles, France. Edmund D. Kinzinger was born in 1888, in Pforzhein, Germany. In Munich he studied at the Kirr Schule and the Staatliche Akademie, and pursued graduate studies at the Academie Modern, Paris. Before serving in the German Army, Kinzinger was a master student of Adolph Holzel at the Staatcliche Akademie, Stuttgart; he returned to study under Henrich Waldschmidt after nearly five years of artillery service. Several of Kinzinger’s fellow students in Germany, such as Johannes Itten, would go on to be associated with the Bauhaus school. Coming into contact with all manner of artistic influences in Europe after World War One, Kinzinger’s work may be viewed as a “synthesis” of modernist styles. I love patina- “a green or brown film on the surface of bronze or similar metals, produced by oxidation over a long period...a gloss or sheen on a surface resulting from age or polishing.” I’ve always enjoyed antique stores and junk yards because of the patina on the objects there and the quality of craftsmanship and solid materials. These tiny tins represent my love of a time when things were made to last, when the lettering and imagery for advertising on objects spared no expense or level of quality to impress. The tins themselves are highly collectible and beautiful all on their own and are the perfect vessels for my timeless representations of the dark beauty and energy of both New Orleans and ‘70’s Times Square. Frankly my lifelong approach in art has been mostly about discovering new ways to produce a “gloss or sheen or film” that interests me, I find beautiful in its way and which I’d want to replicate and study for a few years.
