Scott Gordon, Odyssey, 2021
By Scott Gordon
Located in Sharon, VT
Odyssey welded steel Measures: 18.5 x 19 x 18 in. Rooted in industrial materiality and abstract expression, Odyssey invites the viewer into a narrative of motion and emergence. A spiraling steel ribbon unfurls around a central, columnar form—ribbed and machined with mechanical precision—suggesting a journey inward or upward. A sharp, angular plane rises nearby like a sentinel or waypoint, introducing tension and verticality. The contrast of machined and hand-forged surfaces echoes the balance between human intention and mechanical force. With a commanding presence on its rough-edged steel base, Odyssey reflects on structure, evolution, and the persistence of form through time. Artist statement: I seldom use stock material, but prefer distressed and rusted steel that has been scarred, bent, and made imperfect. In this state, the material becomes quite beautiful. There are figurative elements in my work, though I am more drawn to the non-figurative, to the raw and essential aspect of steel. The Industrial purpose of steel must be considered, its use in construction, manufacturing, the military. Steel is forged with enormous energy and power. The process is violent, loud. Here, it is still and approachable. The compositions are constructed mainly from found parts. Their relationships manifest as I interact with the material. The pieces interlock, balance, and become fitted before I fasten or weld them together. The engineering is elemental. Altering the material is avoided. The number of parts kept to a minimum. Art is my spiritual exercise, my selflessness. It identifies me as a creator and satisfies my human longing for place and purpose. It needs not to be great, or preeminent, or commercial. Art speaks because it is Primitive. It exists because it is sacred. Biography: Scott Gordon was born in Ridgewood, New Jersey in 1966. He attended the University of Denver where he studied business and the University of Washington where he pursued an MFA in creative writing. While he was in Seattle, he was introduced to steel as an employee of the David Gulassa...

China Natural Stone "Painting" Restless Sea and Waves
Located in South Burlington, VT
Chinese extraordinary natural stone painting "Restless Sea and Waves" #6 unique painting This Chinese extraordinary natural stone "painting" of sea and waves in action in white and gray colors is called a dream stone Shih-hua. They are cut from historic Dali marble found in the Cangshan mountains of western China. These mysterious mountains, unique in the world, are known for yielding incredible and fantastic natural landscaped works of art created over tens of millions of years from mineral inclusions that affected the process of ancient organic material which transformed into limestone and finally resulted in marble- a metamorphic hard stone. This art form is centuries of years old since the Ming dynasty. Dream stones became favored art in the west particularly since the 19th century when French collectors named them Pierres de reve. This thin marble stone "painting" is approximately 1/4" thick and is cut from a large slab of rough material revealing incredible patterns in soft white and gray colors. Its weight is surprisingly modest- easily hung with standard hardware. On occasion, private collectors would invite an artisan to inscribe a poetic description onto their more important dream stones and in this case the artists' seal mark and calligraphy translation reads: Beautiful Action of sea and waves Framed under glass Dimensions: Frame: 13 inches high and 17.5 inches wide. Site: 6.5 inches high and 11 inches wide. Provenance: Private Chinese collection, Yunnan, China. History of "White and Gray" dream stone paintings: “White and Gray” dream stone paintings known in China as Shui Mo or Chinese painting stone, were cut from stone found on Shuang Yang mountain in Dali mountains Captivating compositions, they might remind us of a long string of rugged mountain caps from a distance. These dream stones are cut from a scarce regional stone yielding notoriously “fuzzy” detailed paintings. To find examples possessing clear, contrasting detail like this one is indeed a rare find. Fine stone paintings like this example are rare as access to and availability of resource material diminishes. After a thin coating of wax is carefully applied to its surface to protect and reveal its beautiful subtle colors, this stone painting is signed upper right position with poetic verse and seal of an artisan who describes its majestic beauty. Scott Gordon, Venus, 2021
By Scott Gordon
Located in Sharon, VT
Venus welded steel Measures: 12-1/2 x 17-1/2-37 in. This vertical steel sculpture presents a commanding, almost anthropomorphic figure, assembled from industrial components and softened by age-worn patina. A central oval form anchors the piece—suggesting a torso—while angular extensions imply limbs or mechanical appendages. The upward-reaching element at the top introduces a sense of gesture or alertness, reinforcing the piece’s totemic quality. Sturdy yet expressive, the work balances raw materiality with suggestive figuration. Its posture hints at motion held in pause, evoking associations with tools, guardians, or relics of an unknown past. Artist Statement I work with materials that have already lived a life — steel that’s rusted, bent, scarred. These imperfections hold a kind of quiet beauty, one that speaks not of utility but of presence. Though my work sometimes carries figurative echoes, I’m drawn to the non-figurative: the essential, the raw. Steel, once loud and forceful in its industrial context, becomes still and intimate in this new form. Each composition emerges through direct interaction with found parts. I rarely alter the materials beyond what is necessary. Instead, I allow them to dictate form — interlocking, balancing, and aligning until their relationship feels complete. The process is intuitive, the engineering elemental. Art, for me, is a spiritual act — a practice of selflessness and stillness. It doesn't seek acclaim or commercial appeal. It simply exists, honest and sacred. Biography Scott Gordon (b. 1966, Ridgewood, NJ) lives and works in Vermont. He studied business at the University of Denver and earned an MFA in creative writing from the University of Washington. During his time in Seattle, he worked at David Gulassa...

Scott Gordon, Succession, 2021
By Scott Gordon
Located in Sharon, VT
Succession welded steel Measures: 6-1/4 x 13-1/2 x 5-1/2 in. This minimalist steel sculpture features a rhythmic progression of three arching forms, each rising from a shared rectangular base. Varying slightly in scale and curvature, the arcs evoke a sense of motion—like a wave cresting and falling, or stages in a structural evolution. The oxidized surfaces lend a rich patina, highlighting the tactile character of the metal and the passage of time. Balancing repetition with variation, the work engages the viewer through its quiet presence and industrial materiality. It is at once architectural and organic, a study in form, balance, and endurance. Artist statement: I work with materials that have already lived a life — steel that’s rusted, bent, scarred. Scott Gordon, Monument, 2020
By Scott Gordon
Located in Sharon, VT
Monument welded steel, found objects 20.5 x 16 x 4 in. Monument stands as a stark, enigmatic structure—part signal, part shrine. With its twin-columned base and vertical shaft crowned by a cantilevered horizontal arm, the piece recalls ancient markers or industrial relics repurposed for reverence. The form is at once rigid and reaching, grounded yet gestural. Its silhouette suggests a memorial to unseen histories—a tribute to labor, endurance, or forgotten architectures. The off-center balance and weathered presence give it a sense of quiet authority, as though it were a relic unearthed from a future past. With minimalist economy and ritual poise, Monument invites contemplation on permanence, presence, and the symbols we choose to elevate. Artist Statement I work with materials that have already lived a life — steel that’s rusted, bent, scarred. Blue Lady Ema with Handbag Eva Fritz-Lindner, 1970
Located in South Burlington, VT
Blue lady with her handbag- mastertwork from Eva Fritz-Lindner. A serene tall handmade and hand painted sculpture of a lady carrying her handbag named EMA - a friend of the artist- e handcrafted and hand painted in beautiful blue colors. On bottom atelier mark i 3 D and with tree (black brush mark). Ema was the late Eva Fritz-Lindner's (1933-2017) good friend. Designer/maker: Eva Fritz-Lindner with stamp i3D, circa 1960-1970. Glaze: Light and dark blue matte colors are bright and vivid and the hand painting only adds to the charm; light original glaze crazing appropriate for age. Additional comments: Most of her larger sculptures were likely produced in less than 100 copies based upon research and all were hand painted individually by this artist ensuring each work of art was indeed unique. Dimensions: 12.5 inches high. Handmade / handarbeit and hand glazed, few survive. Provenance: Old German collection. About the artist: The bold folk art sculptress and ceramist Eva Fritz-Lindner (1933-2017) studied at the Werkkunstschule Wiesbaden and Darmstadt and was a master student in the sculptor class by Erich Kuhn. From 1955 she worked as a master designer at the Staatliche Majolika-Manufaktur Karlsruhe where she created and designed several hundred highly regarded ceramic folk art animal sculptures and unique wall and garden works of art inspired by nature and possibly the local zoo at Karlsruhe. Owls and family concepts were a particular specialty. During this time she created designs for building and garden ceramics, vessels and small sculptures. Since 1964, the sculptress worked as a freelance artist in her own studio in Karlsruhe-Durlach. The artist designed important works in the field of building ceramics, including wall designs in mosaic, in Mannheim, Karlsruhe, Baden-Baden, Schwäbisch Gmünd and Göppingen. Of particular note, she created enormous scale owl sculptures for the palace gardens in Karlsruhe in 1967 (see photo). In 1962, Eva Fritz-Lindner was awarded the silver medal at the Prague International Ceramic Exhibition. The artists' ceramics are owned and located in the Hetjens-Museum Düsseldorf, in the Museum of Contemporary Ceramic Art...

Scott Gordon, Portal, 2021
By Scott Gordon
Located in Sharon, VT
Portal welded steel Measures: 8.5 x 12.5 x 17.5 in. This abstract steel sculpture explores the balance between solidity and openness. A vertical arm rises from an irregularly shaped base, terminating in a cantilevered form that projects outward. The composition is simple yet evocative, suggesting movement or transition—an architectural gesture frozen in time. Surface textures, visible welds, and the rawness of the metal emphasize the hand of the maker and the industrial origins of the material. The work invites contemplation of spatial tension, negative space, and the quiet power of restraint. Both grounded and reaching, it speaks to themes of structure, memory, and impermanence. Artist statement: I work with materials that have already lived a life — steel that’s rusted, bent, scarred. These imperfections hold a kind of quiet beauty, one that speaks not of utility but of presence.
