History of Cape Hattaras Light House: Built in 1870, the iconic Cape Hatteras Lighthouse stands watch over the Graveyard of the Atlantic's east coast. The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse protects one of the most perilous sea sections off the Atlantic Coast. At Cape Hattaras, the Gulf Stream collides with a Virginia Drift which is a branch of the Canadian Labrador Current. This current forces southbound ships into a dangerous twelve-mile long sandbar called Diamond Shoals. Hundreds of shipwrecks in this area have given it the reputation as the Graveyard of the Atlantic. Visiting the Light Station: the Cape Hatteras Light Station is located near Cape Hatteras which is roughly the middle of Cape Hatteras National Seashore: 46379 Lighthouse Road, Buxton, North Carolina 27920.
