Patricia Pearce is a California artist who attended San Francisco State and UC Irvine and is the adjunct Professor of Fine Art at the College of San Mateo. Her early work on paper explored images of garments using various printmaking techniques. Later, she began to work mainly in collagraph and monotype prints creating singular images of kimonos and ribbons in her subtle shifting, subdued pieces are constructed in a three-step process. Awards include Grade Prize, 3rd Biennial Exhibition of Prints, Wakayama Japan; Grant, Peninsula Community Foundation. Robert Kaess studied at the University of California under Margaret Petersen and Erle Loran, receiving his B.F.A. in 1948 and M.F.A. in 1950. He traveled in Europe from 1952-3 to continue his art studies and paint. In the late 1950's, he developed an allergy to oil paint and, not caring to paint in another medium, he returned to the University of California at Berkeley to study medicine. After graduation, Robert Kaess practiced medicine for almost thirty years but, in his short and successful career as an artist, he painted many fine and original paintings.

'Improvisation 7' second ed. woodcut from 'Klänge' is a woodcut print created by Wassily Kandinsky. The present woodcut print comes from the second edition of 'Klänge (Sounds),' a book of original graphics and poetry by Wassily Kandinsky. The title of the album and of this print, 'Improvisation,' demonstrated Kandinsky's interest in music and how abstract musical forms could be translated into images on a two-dimensional surface. This particular composition is difficult to read, but through the abstraction, one can make out various figures and a landscape beyond. Originally carved and printed in 1911, this second edition print was done ca. 1938. It is a woodcut in black ink on woven paper. Signed with encircled 'K' in the block, lower right (from the book, signed in ink, ed. 117/300)

The Museum of Modern Art described 'Klänge (Sounds)' as follows:
Vasily Kandinsky's self-described "musical album," Klänge (Sounds), consists of thirty-eight prose-poems he wrote between 1909 and 1911 and fifty-six woodcuts he began in 1907. In the woodcuts Kandinsky veiled his subject matter, creating increasingly indecipherable images (though the horse and rider, his symbol for overcoming objective representation, runs through as a leitmotif). This process proved crucial for the development of abstraction in his art. Kandinsky said his choice of media sprang from an "inner necessity" for expression: the woodcuts were not merely illustrative, nor were the poems purely verbal descriptions. Kandinsky sought a synthesis of the arts, in which meaning was created through the interaction of, and space between, text and image, sound and meaning, mark and blank space. The experimental typography shows his interest in the physical aspects of the book.

Painter, printmaker, illustrator, graphic designer and art director, Roy Carruthers was born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa and first studied at the Port Elizabeth Technical College Art School. From 1956, he worked as an art director and graphic designer in South Africa and, after 1960, in London. In 1968, he immigrated to the United States and worked in the advertising industry in New York. In 1974, Carruthers started his own graphic design firm while pursuing his career as a fine artist producing original paintings, drawings and etchings. His collaboration with Editions Press in San Francisco produced both sculpture and color lithographs, of which this work is a pristine example. He also maintained an academic career, teaching graphic techniques at Manhattan's School for the Visual Arts.
Over the course of a distinguished career, Roy Carruthers exhibited widely and with success and was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards including a gold medal from the Society of Illustrators (1973). His work continued to be exhibited in South Africa and the United States and throughout Europe. In 1982, he returned to South Africa as a guest of the South African Government and was honored with a touring museum exhibition of his work. An elegant and psychologically-penetrating pastel study of a fashionable young brunette with gray-green eyes, shown standing and gazing to the viewer's left.
This notable British landscape and portrait artist attended Scarborough School of Art where he studied under the genre and landscape painter Albert Strange. He then proceeded to the National Art Training School at South Kensington and from there, on the recommendation of the artist John Sparkes, to the Royal Academy. At the Royal Academy, he was met with immediate success, first receiving the Turner Gold Medal, followed by the Creswick Prize and the Landseer Scholarship.
Frederick Appleyard was a painter of landscapes, portraits and allegorical compositions of the decorative kind frequently associated with English Impressionism. Over the course of a long and storied career, he received a number of prestigious public commissions that included mural decorations for the Royal Academy of Art. He exhibited for many years at the Royal Academy (1900-1935), the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts. From 1918-1950, he was also a regular exhibitor at the Royal West of England Academy of which he was elected a full member in 1926.

Born in Oakland, California Kelvin Curry's creative destiny was clear early in life. Initially using black and white graphite as his medium and later expanding into mixed media to bring about multi-dimension; as well as a sense of rhythm and grace in the abstract female figure. Kelvin Curry studied fine arts at San Jose State University and has been making and exhibiting art all his life. Curry has a keen understanding of the arts, particularly the black arts movement in and around the Bay Area. Kelvin has exhibited his work in hundred of juried festivals, exhibits, and galleries throughout the country. This is an antique engraved view entitled "Fodinae aerariae Falunenfis, qui orientem fpectat, delineatio" (Copper mining in Falun), Sweden in 1705 from "Sueciae Antiquae et Hodiernae"' published in Stockholm by Erik Dahlberg (1625-1703).
