A watercolor and gouache study for a gallery exhibition at the Village Gallery, Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii.
Ian Tremewen began showing his watercolors with Village Gallery in 1976 while living on Maui. Born in Montreal and now based in Australia, Tremewen has spent much of his life in the Caribbean and Hawaiian tropics. Tremewen's work reflects the interest he feels for light, space and shadow working in sculpture, contemporary glass and textiles. His abstract interpretation of the amorphic shapes of nature, coupled with his design and composition enable him to present his work with a view that is distinctly his own.
Artist's Statement: "As an artist, I can experiment with many aspects and combinations. I've always been fascinated by the psychedelic colours hidden in rainforests. For me, these elements invite abstraction, where a shape, along with colour and texture, defines an object. There now appears to be a refreshing openness emerging in the art world. I feel there is a freedom to stretch and explore ideas and alternatives like never before using mediums and concepts that are expanding the world of art and design.”

Marilyn Heilprin was born in New York City and has a B.A. from Smith College (1948) and M.A. in international relations from The American University (1963). A former research associate, writer and editor for federal agencies and private publishers, she attended writing workshops at Breadloaf, The American University, and Writers' Center in Bethesda, MD. She has published poems in literary journals and was a finalist in the Maryland State Poetry and Literary Society chapbook contests. She co-authored Leo Saal's memoir "Crossings: A Life in Russia and Germany in the First Half of the 20th Century." Feb. 2020, Marilyn Heilprin, 93, a retired editor, writer and researcher who created one of the earliest compendiums of international statistics and organizations.

Mrs. Heilprin, a former resident of Bethesda, Md., was born Marilyn Heyman in New York City. In the 1950s, she was a researcher and writer on handbooks about Mongolia, Finland, Germany, Austria, Lebanon, Syria and Israel for the Washington-area branch of the Human Relations Area Files, a nonprofit formed by several universities. The "Provincetown Print", a white-line woodcut print. Rather than creating separate woodblocks for each color, one block was made and painted. Small groves between the elements of the design created the white line. Because the artists often used soft colors, they sometimes have the appearance of a watercolor painting.

An elegant and psychologically-penetrating pastel study of a fashionable young brunette with gray-green eyes, shown standing and gazing to the viewer's left.
This notable British landscape and portrait artist attended Scarborough School of Art where he studied under the genre and landscape painter Albert Strange. He then proceeded to the National Art Training School at South Kensington and from there, on the recommendation of the artist John Sparkes, to the Royal Academy. At the Royal Academy, he was met with immediate success, first receiving the Turner Gold Medal, followed by the Creswick Prize and the Landseer Scholarship.
Frederick Appleyard was a painter of landscapes, portraits and allegorical compositions of the decorative kind frequently associated with English Impressionism. Over the course of a long and storied career, he received a number of prestigious public commissions that included mural decorations for the Royal Academy of Art. He exhibited for many years at the Royal Academy (1900-1935), the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts. From 1918-1950, he was also a regular exhibitor at the Royal West of England Academy of which he was elected a full member in 1926.
Appleyard's work is well-represented in private and public collections including in the permanent collection of the Tate Gallery which holds 'A Secret', a Chantrey Bequest purchase from the Royal Academy Exhibition...

Persian Illuminated Miniature with Four Figures Playing Polo in a Landscape

The present illuminated folio page contains a fine miniature depicting four figures playing polo. Polo, also called 'chagun,' was the sport of kings and princes of central Asia and Iran, and the sport probably originated there in the 6th century BCE. Polo matches appear in a large number of early Persian texts, including in the writings of the 10th century epic writer Abu l-Qasim al-Firdawsi: He describes numerous polo matches in his famous 'Shahnameh' (The Persian Book of Kings). This particular illumination also is closely related to an example held at the Smithsonian Museum of Asian Art: a folio from 'Guy u Chawgan' (The ball and the polo-mallet) which shows a polo game with the dervish and the shah.

A Persian miniature is a small Persian painting on paper, whether a book illustration or a separate work of art intended to be kept in an album of such works called a muraqqa. The techniques are broadly comparable to the Western and Byzantine traditions of miniatures in illuminated manuscripts. Although there is an equally well-established Persian tradition of wall-painting, the survival rate and state of preservation of miniatures is better, and miniatures are much the best-known form of Persian painting in the West, and many of the most important examples are in Western, or Turkish, museums. Miniature painting became a significant genre in Persian art in the 13th century, receiving Chinese influence after the Mongol conquests, and the highest point in the tradition was reached in the 15th and 16th centuries. The tradition continued, under some Western influence, after this, and has many modern exponents. Etching, drypoint, aquatint (dust ground and spirit ground), spit bite, and roulette in black on cream laid paper with a deckle edge, 6 3/4 x 4 1/2 inches (170 x 112 mm), full margins. Third state (of 4). An illustration from Alphonse Daudet's, Lettres de mon moulin, Paris, 1880. In very good condition with some light uniform toning and two areas of paper tape at the top right and left corners on the verso (from a former mount). With the 1921 J.H. de Bois circular ink stamp in green ink in the lower right margin on the recto (Lugt L.733).

"This engraving by Marco Dente is after a design by Raphael, now lost, used by Giulio Romano for his fresco on the south wall of the Stufetta of cardinal Bibbiena - a small room in the Apostolic Palace, at the Vatican, that originally served as a washroom for the cardinal. The engraving differs from the fresco in some details, such as the cityscape in the background and the two winds above, which may indicate that these elements were present in Raphael's drawing. Persian Illuminated Miniature with Three Hunters on Horseback in a Landscape

The present illuminated folio page contains a fine miniature depicting three figures hunting while on horseback, an image meant to accompany a historic epic. During the medieval period, hunting was an important pastime of male nobility throughout the Islamic world. The Quran itself explicitly endorses hunting and the use of animals to aid in capturing prey: "Lawful to you are foodstuffs that are good to eat and any game that, at your wish, is captured by beasts of prey which train as you do dogs, according to the method that Allah has taught you, after you have spoken the name of Allah over it." (Q 6:4) Muslim princes and nobles enjoyed the chase of the prey via horseback, using bow and arrow, crossbows, and blowpipes to capture their prey Horseback riding itself trained young men in the necessary skills for armed combat and warfare, developing their speed and strength.

A Persian miniature is a small Persian painting on paper, whether a book illustration or a separate work of art intended to be kept in an album of such works called a muraqqa. The techniques are broadly comparable to the Western and Byzantine traditions of miniatures in illuminated manuscripts. Although there is an equally well-established Persian tradition of wall-painting, the survival rate and state of preservation of miniatures is better, and miniatures are much the best-known form of Persian painting in the West, and many of the most important examples are in Western, or Turkish, museums. Miniature painting became a significant genre in Persian art in the 13th century, receiving Chinese influence after the Mongol conquests, and the highest point in the tradition was reached in the 15th and 16th centuries.
