A substantial and lyrically painted watercolor view of the original Spanish colonial church and mission buildings at Carmel on the coast of California with a view beyond towards the Carmel highlands.
Henry "Hank" Volle first attended the University of Illinois and subsequently studied in Europe, including at the Klinger Institute, Vienna. Upon returning to the United States, Volle began to study with the water-colorists of the California Bay area. Essentially a plein-air painter, Hank Volle painted along the California coast where he exhibited with success. He was also a member of the Santa Clara Watercolor Society and the Society of Western Artists.

Doris Lyons Hoover (American, 1927-2014) was born in Fort Payne, Alabama, on Oct. 8, 1927, on her grandparents' farm. At U.C. she met her husband Jack Hoover, and the couple moved to Palo Alto in 1954.

California Tonalism was art movement that existed in California from circa 1890 to 1920. Tonalist are usually intimate works, painted with a limited palette. Tonalist paintings are softly expressive, suggestive rather than detailed, often depicting the landscape at twilight or evening, when there is an absence of contrast. Tonalist paintings could also be figurative, but in them, the figure was usually out of doors or in an interior in a low-key setting with little detail.
Tonalism had its origins in the works of the French Barbizon school and in the works of American painters who were influenced by them. California Tonalism was born when the emphasis in California landscape painting passed from the grand landscapes of works like those of Thomas Hill and William Keith's early career, to more intimate views of a domesticated landscape. Provenance: private collection - Aspen, CO. "The South View of the City of Worcester, from Digley Fields" was engraved by English artist Thomas Sanders (Active: Mid-Late 18th Century) after a drawing by himself. "Hewell, the Seat of the Right Honorable the Earl of Plymouth" was engraved by English artist Michael Angelo Rooker (1743-1801) after a watercolor painting by English artist Paul Sandby (1731-1809). Comes from Nash's two volume "Collections for the History of Worcestershire", (1781-1782) (First edition), which consists of 75 engravings. Each work is printed from one copper plate in one color: black. There was a (Second edition) "with Additions" bound in with Volume II of this portfolio published by John White in (1799). And both the First and Second editions of "Collections for the History of Worcestershire" are based off Thomas Sanders' 1779-1781 "Perspective Views of the Market Towns within the County of Worcester". "The South View of the City of Worcester, from Digley Fields" has an unidentified watermark in the center of its sheet resembling "XV".
Biography:
Treadway Russell Nash (24 June 1724 – 26 January 1811) was an English clergyman, now known as an early historian of Worcestershire and the author of Collections for the History of Worcestershire, an important source document for Worcestershire county histories. He was a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London.
Treadway Russell Nash was born on 24 June 1724 born at Clerkenleap, in Kempsey, Worcestershire. His family were from Ombersley. They had lands there and at Claines, and had later bought lands in the Reformation around St Peter's, Droitwich. He was related to James Nash and John Nash, both MPs for Worcester. His father Richard, a grandson of Sir Rowland Berkeley, died in 1740, and Richard's eldest son in 1757. As a result, Treadway Russell Nash inherited the Russells' Strensham estates from his brother, as well as the Nash estates, and took both names.
He was educated from the age of twelve at King's School, Worcester, and became a scholar at Worcester College, Oxford aged fifteen. In March 1749, he accompanied his brother on a trip to the continent, to aid Richard's health. They visited Paris for about six weeks, before spending the summer "on the banks of the Loire". They then visited "Bourdeaux, Thoulouse, Montpelier, Marseilles, Leghorn, Florence, Rome, Naples, Bologna, Venice, Padua, Verona, Milan, Lyons, and again Paris"; such expeditions are often known as the Grand Tour.
On his return in late summer 1751, Nash took up a post as Vicar of Eynsham through his friend and future brother-in-law, John Martin. He also had an income as a tutor at Oxford. He took his Doctor of Divinity degree and left Oxford, having "gone out grand compounder", following the death of his brother. He also left his benefice at Eynsham in 1757. While at Oxford he had proposed a road from there to Witney (now the A40 and B4022), and also stood for Parliament. Nash married Margaret Martin...

Born in Troyes, France in 1946, Evelyne Brigeois grew up in the town of Nimes, east of Paris. She subsequently lived and painted in Germany, England and Spain before moving to the United States in her late twenties. Comes from Virtue's 1736 "The Heads of the Kings of England, Proper for Mr. Rapin's History" portfolio of approximately 63 engravings. Engraving of Henry VII, King of England. Half length with long hair, cap with jewelled brooch, jewelled collar, and robes edged in ermine, holding orb in left hand and sceptre in right. Within a rectangular frame with crown, orb, and sceptre above and with coat of arms, putti, and a portrait of Elizabeth of York below. With English inscription below.
Henry VII (1457-1509) was the King of England and Lord of Ireland from his seizure of the crown on 22 August 1485 to his death. He was the first monarch of the House of Tudor. Henry attained the throne when his forces defeated King Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth Field, the culmination of the Wars of the Roses.

Stamp and signed on verso. Condition: Excellent. Unframed. Image size: 22"50"H x 15.25"W. Size including border: 24.33"H x 22.50"W.
The original photo is in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Museum. Graham said about this photo, "This is a photo I took of my mother Mary when I was 11, in 1953. She was 33. It was the first image I took where I realized that it's possible that I see differently than most people. Normally my mother would be making the bed, or cooking breakfast — mother stuff. I'd never seen my mother in this contemplative mood. I'd never seen her either looking into her future or wondering if her life had been what she wanted or thinking about her past. I don't know. I only know that that's an incredible moment in my mother's existence."
While best known as a founding member of the rock band Crosby, Stills, Nash, and (sometimes) Young, Nash also developed a parallel career as a photographer, collector, and pioneer of digital imaging. Nash's photographs include revealing portraits of family and friends, images of life on the road, still lifes and landscapes, street photographs, bad credit people, and a unique series of self-portraits which often shows him reflected in windows and mirrors. His photography establishes Nash as a masterful visual artist with a keen eye for moments and scenes not immediately available to the common eye.
