"Ghosts" - Abstract Composition in Acrylic, Oil, and Ink on Cradled Wood Panel Dramatic abstract composition by Michele King (American, b. 1962). This piece resembles a nebula, with swirling texture and subtle variations in color. Although the piece appears to be mostly black, there are a variety of colors that peek through the top layer. A layer of high gloss varnish creates a nearly iridescent quality to the piece, and the colors shift subtly depending on the viewing angle. Signed "Michele King" on verso. No frame, but the edges are painted for a frame-less display. Board size: 24"H x 24"W Michele King (American, b. 1962) was born in Cleveland, Ohio and moved to California in the 1990s. She attended Virginia Tech and Harvard, where she earned her MPA. She pursued graduate studies at the Glasgow School of Art in 2013. Her work is focused on “memory, the future, and ways in which perception is shaped through a combination of reality and imagination.” King’s process involves layering of various media, creating depth and texture. Cropped and deconstructed images of a Kauai beachfront, palm trees and a pair of roosters are represented on 14 x 11 inch Yupo translucent paper in Patty deGrandpre’s contemporary abstract mixed media print titled “Two Roosters Running Amok on Poipu Beach”. This one of kind piece pays homage to this notorious Kauai beach and the roosters and chickens that have become so familiar to the Hawaiian Islands. DeGrandpre thoughtfully combines and layers block printing ink and digital inkjet in hues of blue, orange, yellow, red, and gray. A screen of clouds provides both contrast and texture within the distinct fields of vivid color and the pair of red roosters to create this graphic interpretation of a tropical Hawaiian landscape...

Untitled, Figurative, Ink, Brush, Dry Pastel on Paper Jogen Chowdhury "In Stock"

By Jogen Chowdhury

Located in Kolkata, West Bengal

Jogen Chowdhury - Untitled, 14 x 11 inches ( Unframed Size ) Ink with Brush & Dry Pastel on Paper, 2014 Style : He has immense contribution in inspiring young artists of India. Jogen Chowdhury had developed his individual style after his return from Paris. Jogen Chowdhury has been widely acknowledged to be, the master of the unbroken line. Like Léger, Chowdhury has been stirred by the linear Kalighat pat tradition, but his lines are emotive and used to express and suggest the character of a person. This is done by, distorting the form without breaking the line and in the world of young, contemporary art; distortion has been Jogen Chowdhury’s most significant impact. Perhaps, because of this, a common observation of his work is that his “people” are caricatures. The person feels familiar to the viewer but it is far more individualised - the face is imaginary but the psyche or characteristics are real. The power and beauty of his technique and line is this play between the known and unknown. In Jogen Chowdhury’s work, the figure is always in the foreground, it is primary, it conveys everything. He uses colour to give volume to his figures and the fluidity of his lines bring a sensual aspect to his forms. About the Artist & his works : Born : 1939 in Daharpara Village, Faridpur, Bangladesh. Jogen Chowdhury is an eminent Indian painter and considered an important painter of 21st century India. Family Background: His father Pramatnath Chowdhury was a Brahmin zamindar. Both his parents took interest in art, Jogen Chowdhury's father Pramatnath Chowdhury painted several mythological scenes from the village theatres and also sculpted various Hindu icons. Whereas his mother was an expert in Alpana drawings. 1939-47 Jogen Chowdhury lived in a village atmosphere. And after partition in 1948, the whole family shifted. Till 1951 the whole family stayed at the police department quarter of his uncle, where on the walls Jogen Chowdhury painted his first painting, 1962 Jogen Chowdhury was employed as Designer in the Handloom Board. Education: 1955-60: Studied at the Government College of Art and Crafts, Kolkata. 1965 : He went to paris to study in Ecole des Beaux Arts, in William Hayter’s Atelier 17. Professional Experience: 1968-72 : He worked as an Art-Designer, Madras Handloom Board, Madras. 1970 : A collection of his poems were published, titled 'Hridoy Train Beje Othey'. 1987 : Joined Kala Bhavan , Santiniketan as a professor of painting. Selected Exhibitions: 1972, 1975 & 1978 respectively : I, III, IV Triennales at New Delhi . 1979: The Sao Paolo Biennale . 1980: The exhibitions at the Fukuoka Museum, Japan. 1982: The Royal Academy, London. 1982: The Hirschhorn Museum, Washington D.C. 1986: The II Havana Biennale 1989: 'Festival of India', in Geneva 2002: Saffron art...

Persian Illuminated Miniature with Four Figures Playing Polo in a Landscape
Persian Illuminated Miniature with Four Figures Playing Polo in a Landscape

Persian Illuminated Miniature with Four Figures Playing Polo in a Landscape

Located in Milwaukee, WI

The present illuminated folio page contains a fine miniature depicting four figures playing polo. Polo, also called 'chagun,' was the sport of kings and princes of central Asia and Iran, and the sport probably originated there in the 6th century BCE. Polo matches appear in a large number of early Persian texts, including in the writings of the 10th century epic writer Abu l-Qasim al-Firdawsi: He describes numerous polo matches in his famous 'Shahnameh' (The Persian Book of Kings). This particular illumination also is closely related to an example held at the Smithsonian Museum of Asian Art: a folio from 'Guy u Chawgan' (The ball and the polo-mallet) which shows a polo game with the dervish and the shah. 12 x 8.25 inches, artwork 19.75 x 15.88 inches, frame accompanied on the back with an image of the verso framed to conservation standards with a 100% rag silk-lined mat in a gold gilded frame A Persian miniature is a small Persian painting on paper, whether a book illustration or a separate work of art intended to be kept in an album of such works called a muraqqa. The techniques are broadly comparable to the Western and Byzantine traditions of miniatures in illuminated manuscripts. Although there is an equally well-established Persian tradition of wall-painting, the survival rate and state of preservation of miniatures is better, and miniatures are much the best-known form of Persian painting in the West, and many of the most important examples are in Western, or Turkish, museums. Miniature painting became a significant genre in Persian art in the 13th century, receiving Chinese influence after the Mongol conquests, and the highest point in the tradition was reached in the 15th and 16th centuries. The tradition continued, under some Western influence, after this, and has many modern exponents. The Persian miniature was the dominant influence on other Islamic miniature traditions, principally the Ottoman miniature...

The raw beeswax I use has taken its form at the end of a long series of natural processes followed by a manufacturing process, and once it is in my hands, the studio becomes a factory. I apply my own methods of transforming the material by casting the beeswax into three-dimensional forms. Once I have fixed both a place and a time in the future for a potential installation, I begin to determine how the beeswax lines will take their aggregated shape in that space and, simultaneously, how many lines might be manufactured for that particular space in the amount of time available." Mary Early (born 1975, Washington, DC) lives and works in Washington, DC. She studied visual art, film, and video at Bennington College, and her work has been exhibited at the United States Botanic Garden, Washington Project for the Arts, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Second Street Gallery (Charlottesville, VA), Hemphill Fine Arts (Washington DC,) the Austrian Cultural Forum (Washington DC), Galerie Im Ersten (Vienna, Austria), Kloster Schloss Salem (Salem, Germany), Kunstlerbund Tubingen (Tubingen, Germany), and the American University Museum (Washington DC) among other regional and national galleries. Her early work incorporated formed concrete, tarpaper and paraffin wax, fabricated wood structures, and, increasingly over the years, surfaces coated with wax as a method of preserving or concealing an object within. Recent works have relied solely on solid forms cast in wax, abandoning the use of any permanent armature. Temporary installations are guided by schematic drawings and plans, which then serve as a permanent record. In 2014 she exhibited her first large-scale installation of wax lines at Second Street Gallery in Charlottesville, VA, followed by temporary installations in response to various historical sites in Salem, Germany (2016) and Tubingen Germany (2017). In 2017 she participated in the exhibition “Twist-Layer-Pour” at the American University Museum, which included Untitled [Curve], an installation of thousands of beeswax lines assembled on the floor of the museum. In spring 2018 she was commissioned to create a temporary installation at the Sun Valley Center for the Arts, Sun Valley Idaho. This work took the form of two intersecting curtains of hanging beeswax lines bisecting a 12’ foot x 18’ foot room, providing an immersive and enclosed viewing space. Early’s work is included in the collections of the US Department of State/Embassy of Panama, Kimpton Hotels, and the District of Columbia Art Bank among other public and private collections. She is a recipient of the Artist Fellowship Grant from the DC Commission on Arts & Humanities, Washington DC (2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2011, 2009, 2007). Early is the director of HEMPHILL Fine Arts, Washington, DC, and serves on the boards of Hamiltonian Artists and Washington Sculptors Group. She handles the work of contemporary artists and artist estates, including the work of William Christenberry, Colby Caldwell, Hedieh Javanshir Ilchi, Linling Lu, Mingering Mike, Robin Rose, Renée Stout...
