Old Pope - Surrealist, Drawing Made With Plastic, Modern Italian Art, Multimedia
Located in New York, NY
Angelo Canevari’s Vecchio Papa (Old Pope) is a 25 x 20-inch surrealist drawing made with melted polyethylene. It is a sarcastic, ironic, mocking head portrait of an old Pope. The melted white polyethylene used to draw the figure on the black canvas gives it a crystal sculptural quality of surrealistic appearance. This artwork is part of a limited number of pieces the artist created at the end of his life. It has been featured in a book written by renowned writer Andrea Camilleri. Angelo Canevari is an Italian sculptor from a long lineage of artists active in Rome since the 17th century. He has been commissioned several works by the Vatican, including the Bronze Doors of the Cathedral of Belluno and the Vatican Coins.

Head of a Woman - Surrealist Drawing, Transparent Art, Contemporary Italian Art
Located in New York, NY
Angelo Canevari’s Head of a Woman is a 25 x 20 inch surrealist drawing made with melted polyethylene. Canevari's work is often inspired by classical themes and myths. The mythology is often re-visited through his personal memories giving shape to figures that are a combination of historical mythical characters and the imagery of his innermost self. This Head of a Woman is the perfect syncretism of this creative process: maybe the head of an ancient Mother Goddess or just a minimalistic representation of a character from Canevari's memories. The melted polyethylene used to draw the figure gives it a crystal sculptural quality of surrealistic appearance. Angelo Canevari is an Italian sculptor who comes from a long lineage of artists active in Rome since the 17th century. He has been commissioned several works by the Vatican including the Bronze Doors of the Cathedral of Belluno and the Vatican Coins...

The resin, the glitter and the cars are addition to make the piece even richer and more interesting. The French Bulldogs are now America's favorite dog. After more than 3 decades with the labrador reign, the 'Frenchies' are now the kings and queens of the dog world. This piece is also an homage to Los Angeles, its skyline, the beautiful weather and the busy traffic with fancy cars. These two are 'Billy' and 'Veronica', the gangstar couple who terrorize the greater Los Angeles, controlling the distribution of dog treats in South California. Don't mess with them. Whichever dog you own, this couple with the Los Angeles skyline...

His latest series, aptly titled "Spectral Eyes: Doll Glass Manga Mirage," became a testament to his innovative spirit and a captivating fusion of the ethereal and the tangible. The inspiration for this series dawned upon Fujita as he sought to infuse new life into his iconic portrayal of Manga eyes. Departing from traditional mediums, he delved into the realm of dolls, each with its own unique set of glass eyes. These delicate orbs, carefully chosen and adhered to his canvases, introduced an otherworldly quality to the familiar expressions of Manga characters. One can trace the genesis of this artistic endeavor to Fujita's profound contemplation of the ephemeral nature of human emotions and the transient quality of visual perception. The glass eyes, once part of dolls that often evoke memories of childhood innocence, took on a new identity as vessels for conveying the nuanced emotions intrinsic to Manga characters. The series unfolded like a mirage, with each canvas presenting a spectral array of Manga eyes that seemed to transcend the physical constraints of the artwork. "Gaze 543210," the initial piece in the series, showcased the meticulous arrangement of doll glass eyes, each contributing to a harmonious symphony of expressions. The numerical title hinted at a structured sequence, a deliberate arrangement reminiscent of the orderly composition of Manga panels. In "888265" Fujita orchestrated a dance of gazes that defied the limitations of static portraiture. The glass eyes, gleaming with a spectral luminosity, became the focal points of a balletic performance, inviting viewers into a surreal realm where the boundaries between reality and illusion blurred. The series crescendoed with "526175" a masterful composition that encapsulated the artist's exploration of the illusory nature of perception. The glass eyes, bathed in a spectral glow, conjured a mirage of emotions, inviting viewers to delve into the intricacies of the Manga characters' souls. From a sociological perspective, Fujita's use of doll glass eyes carries a profound commentary on the commodification of emotion and the intersection of childhood nostalgia with contemporary visual storytelling. The dolls, once cherished playthings, now assumed a symbolic role in conveying the complexities of human experience through the lens of Manga art...

The Flowers of the Street of Spirits
Located in Dallas, TX
Artist Statement: How many ways can I depict a flower? I can draw it, paint it, and photograph it. Then I can manipulate those images on a printer. I can enlarge it. Make it smaller. Make the negative. Make the positive. Change the color. My mornings in Santa Fe start with a walk around the garden to see what has bloomed overnight. Two summers ago, I rented an adobe guest house that is surrounded by Hollyhocks, Roses, Poppies, and Yellow Thistles. The flowers have crept into my vision. The first summer, I painted the flowers using oil on canvas. The second summer I became more experimental, combining drawing, photography, and painting. Mixing the media all in one artwork, I abandoned canvas for transparent Lucite panels. The new works are essentially mixed media collage applied to Lucite. Working on front and back, layered to see through to the next. Creating a real space with real shadows but in an ambiguous world. The flowers are dense but there is an identity and clear shape of each. These works are labor intensive, requiring precise cutting of the paper and careful application. In "The Flowers of the Street of Spirits," black Hollyhocks stand tall with turquoise Firewheels and magenta Coneflowers. Real and unreal. Cut paper and paint come together in a surreal garden...

Elizabeth Riley, Video Feet, 2017, Paper, Acrylic Paint, Inkjet Print, Polyester
Located in Darien, CT
Elizabeth Riley’s work addresses questions concerning the complex and changing world we inhabit and our “mixed reality,” living between physical and digital/virtual contexts – are we our everyday, familiar, material past, or our digital future, and is this apparent “mixed reality” of the moment to be embraced or resisted. Is the digital present the bells and whistles of an unchanged and familiar humanity or does it define us, and the future. This project is embodied in tabletop cityscapes, structural wall works and installations including video, inkjet-printed video stills, and found home furnishings. Other continuing threads at play in my body of work are the struggle to overcome oppression as a woman – and a relationship with the urban environment and constructed space, as both personal and paradigmatic space. Exhibited in Excessive Frugalities, Digital Feet and Rocking Posture are three dimensional wall works made from multicolored video stills inkjet-printed on paper, and paint on the tough mylar-like material, duralar. These work combine illusionistic space with constructed elements in a multidimensional mashup of traditional and new mediums. . A long time New Yorker, Elizabeth Riley graduated from Barnard College and received an MFA from Hunter College. In April 2017, the site-specific participatory installation, City Remix, appeared in the exhibition Reconstruct at LIU, in Brooklyn, and in June 2017 the 20 x 20 ft installation, Paper Dragons, Broolyn, which functions as a walk-in, physical video, appeared in Bigger Bolder Better at 470 Vanderbilt Ave, Brooklyn, sponsored by Chashama. In 2016 a multipart tabletop cItyscape, Video City, appeared in the exhibition, Land, Air, Place at Project ARTspace in Manhattan. In 2014-2015 large-scale installations by the artist appeared in exhibitions of site-specific work in Brooklyn at Storefront Ten Eyck, curated by Karin Bravin, and in Atlanta and Duluth, Georgia presented by Dashboard. In 2011-2013 her work was exhibited in a number of 2- and 3-person shows or screenings, including at Kijdome, Boston, and dB Visual Artist Series / Dungeon Beach, Storefront Bushwick, Creon Gallery and Studio Salon curated by David Gibson, all in New York City. Groups shows include exhibitions at Denise Bibro Fine Arts, Lesley Heller Workspace, Van Der Plas Gallery, Janet Kurnatowski Gallery, Norte Maar, Associated Gallery, Brooklyn Fire Proof, Active Space, Sugar in Bushwick, NY Studio Gallery, Sideshow Gallery, PS 122, and Nurtureart. The People, signed 3D photo realist mixed media sculpture of people viewing art
Located in New York, NY
Howard Kanovitz The People, 1971 3-5 Mixed Media Silkscreen on Plexiglas and aluminum base Signed: Artist's Signature etched on the work and annotated A.P., Edition of 1 (an Artists Proof, aside from the regular edition of 75) 15 × 16 × 1 1/2 inches Signatured etched on the work and annotated A.P. , aside from the limited edition of 75. This excellent 1971 3-D photo realist work "The People" is a multiple based upon a larger work the artist did of people beholding a work of art. Here, we see them only from behind, because they are busy looking at art - a clever photorealist work - art about art - catching people in the process of looking at art. Howard Kanovitz Biography Howard Kanovitz was a leader of Photo Realism: a documenter of style and fashion, depicting members of the art scene at openings, or superimposing known critics and curators onto images of board room meetings. In his particular style, he explored the intersections of painting, photography, fiction, and fact. Kanovitz studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and The Art Studenst League in Woodstock where he worked with Yasuo Kyniyoshi before moving to New York an apprenticing with Franz Kline. As a member of New York’s downtown art scene, Kanovitz painted abstract paintings, which he exhibited at Tenth Street Galleries early in his career. Following his father’s death in 1963, Kanovitz went through family photos, an experience which prompted him to interrogate the relationship between images and perception. At this time, Kanovitz abandoned abstraction in favor of a figurative style and worked arduously in this new direction. These efforts culminated in a 1966 solo exhibition at the Jewish Museum, securing his place as a leader of Photo Realism among artists such as Larry Rivers, Alex Katz, and Chuck Close. His photo based, representational paintings exhibited at the Jewish Museum show were the first to be called “photo-realist” and shocked many in the art community prompting a symposium which was held at the New York Studio School for “downtown artists” to weigh in on this perennial “hot topic”, newly addressed by one of their own. Kanovitz first began using airbrush in 1967, giving his paintings a feeling of photographic perfection. Cut out figures created using this precisionist technique were placed in the viewers space, often in front of Kanovitz’s painted canvas depicting the luminaries of the art world of the time. This type of installation was the centerpiece in the first of several Waddell Gallery shows. Kanovitz has been the subject of many solo museum shows internationally and his work is collected by institutions such as the Whitney Museum of American Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Tate Britain, London, and Museum Moderner Kunst, Vienna. -Courtesy Eric Firestone...
