Rembrandt’s Pupils
Upon completing his artistic education, Rembrandt opened a studio and began to take students - the first of which were Gerrit Dou and Isaac Jouderville. The studio functioned as an art school, in which materials and guidance were provided - contrary to the studios of his peers, Rembrandt did not offer lodging to his pupils. The families of prospective pupils had to pay Rembrandt 100 guilders (enough for a house at the time) for this artistic education, and the profits from any works produced by pupils under Rembrandt would be paid to the master rather than kept by the student-artist - this contributed substantially to the master’s income.When taking on pupils, Rembrandt looked for those who could already paint, and guided their styles to reflect his. By choosing pupils who were somewhat experienced artists, Rembrandt had an array of painters that could be involved at any stage of assisting with the creation of his works - in this way, Rembrandt’s pupils often functioned as studio assistants as well. In order to perfect Rembrandt’s style, pupils would paint copies of their teacher’s works, sometimes adding their own distinct variations. They would use the same subjects and models as Rembrandt himself, and would accompany him on outdoor trips to paint nature and landscapes. The extensive copying and utilisation of same source materials has rendered Rembrandt’s work and the work of his pupils difficult to differentiate, even in the modern era.At least 50 pupils were taught by Rembrandt, with many continuing on to become his studio assistants. A very substantial, mid-century abstracted landscape comprising an assembled group of Fendi shopping bags in the fashion designer's signature tones of cream, bistre and scarlet, shown contrasted against a lyrical, sunset-coral background. This powerful and lyrical oil was awarded the 1963 Michetti Painting Prize.
Gianni Pisani studied at the Accademia de Bella Arti in Naples under Emilio Notte. Much of his career in the 1960s and 70s involved reinvigorating the Neapolitan art scene with assemblages, ‘object art’ and performance art, an approach that was critically described and acclaimed by poet and writer, Edoardo Sanguineti.
The recipient of numerous medals, prizes and juried awards, including the Prize City Cesenatico (1955). Pisani exhibited widely and with success from the early 1950's including at the 8th Biennale of San Benedetto del Tronto (1969), Palazzo Dugnani (1983) and at the Non-Existent Gallery. Other solo and group exhibitions include a three-time participation in the National Quadrennial Art Shows (VIII, Rome, 1960; IX, Palazzo dei Esposizione, 1965/66; XI, Palazzo dei Congressi, 1986) and the 1995 Venice Biennale.
An ardent exponent, and influential teacher, of Modernism, Pisani taught at the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera in Milan and, for many years, at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, of which he was later appointed director. Pauline Haynes Shirer (1894 - 1975), American
Born in Topeka in 1894, Pauline is said to have been at least partially raised by her aunt, Hannah Haynes Headlee (Pauline’s mother died when she was 8 years old). By 16, she was living as a ward in the Topeka home of Elizabeth Cunningham, a dressmaker. After graduating from Topeka High School, she attended the New York School of Fine and Applied Art (later Parsons School of Design), completing a two-year course in one year (1913-1914). At the same time, she took weekend classes at the Art Students League. Returning to Topeka, she studied and taught at Washburn College (now University) from 1914 to 1915 and instructed summer sessions at Kansas State Teachers College, Pittsburgh, during the same period. Afterward, she returned to the New York School of Fine and Applied Art, where she taught and took classes (1915-1918). She spent the summer of 1916 as an instructor at the Skidmore School of Art, Saratoga Springs, New York.
In 1917, Pauline married Hampton F. Shirer, an architect from MIT, who was also an artist and came from a prominent Topeka family. The couple later settled in Wellesley, Massachusetts in 1921, living in a house which they built and decorated themselves. During the next 16 years, they raised two children and Pauline also found time to illustrate promotional brochures and primary school texts. During the early years of her career, Pauline focused on the applied arts – such as watercolor designs for curtains, silk fabrics, wallpaper as well as poster designs, theater backdrops and book covers. Later she would transition into creating her own representational works of art.
Shirer returned to Topeka in 1937. During her career as a painter in oils and watercolors, she sketched in Europe four times and did paintings of New England subjects. However, most of her paintings were of the West. She executed Kansas views first, and they continued to hold her interest throughout her life. Typical were her studies of rustic buildings on the plains, glimpses of the prairie country, and the historic buildings of Topeka. She also painted New Mexico landscapes and Colorado mountain scenes.
