About the Item
This large, colorful still life painting by Paul Longenecker (1920-2008) depicts a varied assortment of flowers in an urn. There is a bird’s net to the lower right of the urn as well as a ladybug and a butterfly hidden in the composition. The painting is composed of oil on heavy Masonite. It measures 48 x 41 inches. The painting is signed and dated (1968) in the lower right. It is in good condition. There is some wear and roughness along the edges approximately ¼ inch wide on each edge that was covered by the previous frame. It should be covered by a new frame as well.
Paul Longenecker (1920-2008) (his surname sometimes appears as "Longnecker") was born in Rockville Center, New York in 1920). Longenecker began drawing as a young child. When he was 12, he received his first lesson in oil painting from his grandmother, who was a landscape and china painter. After high school, Mr. Longenecker enrolled in the National Academy in New York City and sketched between classes, finding over time that he had a talent for portraiture.
Longenecker spent four years in the U.S. Army as an officer in the medical corps stationed in England. When he returned from duty, he enrolled in New York City’s Arts Student League. He lived for a period in Hawaii, where he made his living painting portraits. Following many years of teaching art in New York City, he had a one-man show on Nantucket and fell in love with the island.
In November 1971, Mr. Longenecker bought a home on Union Street, Nantucket where he set up
a studio. He was an early member of the Artist’s Association of Nantucket, showing his work at its local galleries. He spent winters in Palm Beach, until the early 1980s, when he decided to stay on theisland year-round.
From the mid-1980s to the mid- 1990s, Mr. Longenecker offered painting classes at the Barker Gallery. His workwas exhibited at several prominent galleries in Nantucket. Many of his later paintings were colorful New England scenes. He was also known for his realistic still life and animal paintings.
In 2006, Mr. Longenecker suffered a stroke and stopped painting. He died on June 3, 2008 at the age of 87. (Source: Artist’s Association of Nantucket)

Condition: Very good Frame: Framed and floating. Simple metal frame This very realistic watercolor depicts a flowering plant, a New Guinea Creeper The colors are rich and saturated. The composition makes wonderful use of shadow and light to give definition and depth. The painting is on heavy Arches paper. It is mounted and floating on a simple acid-free mat and enclosed by a metal frame. The painting, mat and frame are in very good condition. Born in San Francisco and raised in Marin County, Sally Robertson was always the class artist. Attending UC Santa Barbara during the Pop Art era, she found the aesthetics of soup cans and Brillo boxes could not entice her into being a full-time artist. She switched to the History of Art, later earning a Master’s Degree at UC Berkeley. Even then, late 19th-century art nouveau resonated with her, a style sensuous and decorative with an emphasis on floral motifs. With this background, Sally joined a gallery on Union Street in San Francisco, which evolved into Thackrey & Robertson, significant dealers in works of art on paper from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Traveling widely for her gallery, she saw the originals of her most revered watercolor painters, including Charles Demuth, Charles Renee Mackintosh...Category
