Italian Vintage Dye Transfer Photograph Franco Fontana Color Landscape Photo
Located in Surfside, FL
Franco Fontana (Italian, born 1933) Title: Landscape 1987 Edition 6/15 Medium: dye-transfer Dimensions: Frame 21.5 x 27.5. Sight 12 x 20. Provenance: Monique Goldstrom Gallery Franco Fontana (Italian, 1933) is an Italian photographer. He is best known for his Minimalist abstract colour landscapes. He was influenced by Minimalism and Abstract Expressionism. Franco Fontana was born in 1933 in Modena. He started taking photographs in the 1950s when he was working as a decorator in a furniture showroom. In 1961 he joined a local amateur club in Modena. The experience would be a turning point in his career, and Fontana went on to have his first solo exhibition in 1965 at the Società Fotografica Subalpina, Turin and at the Galleria della Sala di Cultura in Modena in 1968. Since then he has participated in more than 400 group and solo exhibitions including the exhibit Lines, Spheres and Glyphs at Robert Klein Gallery with works by photographers: Franco Fontana, Mario Giacomelli, Ernst Haas, Gyorgy Kepes and Aaron Siskind. Franco Fontana is considered one of the most relevant photographers of our time, In 1963 he exhibited his work at the Biennale of Color in Vienna, and in 1968 he held his first solo exhibition in Modena. Fontana often pares landscapes down to their essential elements, producing flat, geometric compositions reminiscent of the color field abstract expressionist paintings of Mark Rothko Ad Reinhardt and Barnett Newman, by underexposing his transparencies. Contrasting blue skies with green or yellow grass and the rigid lines of buildings with the softness of puffy clouds, he makes color and texture his primary subjects. He has also shot in Polaroid film, Cibachrome, C Print and chromogenic prints. His art has been acquired by some of the most important museums worldwide, including the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris, MoMA in New York, Museum Ludwig in Cologne, Museum of Modern Art in Norman, Oklahoma, National Gallery in Beijing, Australian National Gallery in Melbourne, University of Texas in Austin, Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, Tokyo Metropolitan Museum, Israel Museum in Jerusalem, and Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville in Paris. Fontana has photographed for advertising campaigns for brands such as Fiat, Volkswagen, Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, Snam, Sony, Volvo, Versace, Canon, Kodak, Robe di Kappa, Swissair, and has been a magazine photographer for publications including Time, Life, Vogue (USA and France), Venerdì di Repubblica, Panorama, and with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and The New York Times. Fontana's first book, Skyline, was published in 1978 in France by Contrejour and in Italy by Punto e Virgola with a text by Helmut Gernsheim. Fontana is the art director of the Toscana Foto Festival. He has received numerous awards, such as the 1989 Tokyo Photographer Society of Japan - The 150 Years of Photography - Photographer Award. Fontana is especially interested in the interplay of colours. His early innovations in colour photography in the 1960s were stylistically disruptive. According to art critic Giuliana Scimé, Fontana "destroyed all the structures, practices, and technical choices within the Italian tradition." Fontana uses 35mm cameras, and as noted by Iwan Zahar, deploys distant viewpoints with telephoto lenses to flatten contours in a landscape of crops and fields into bands of intense, saturated colour. This is an effect that Franco Lefèvre has described as 'dialectical landscapism'. Of his use of colour in his 2019 retrospective exhibition Sintesi ('Synthesis') at Fondazione Modena Arti Visive, curator Diana Baldon has observed; “His bold geometric compositions are characterised by shimmering colours, level perspectives and a geometric-formalist and minimal language, By adopting this approach during the 1960s, Fontana injected a new vitality into the field of creative colour photography for then multicolour was not in fashion in art photography., The way Fontana shoots, dematerializes the objects photographed, which loose three-dimensionality and realism to become part of an abstract drawing”. Aside from the rural landscape Fontana has applied his graphic sensibility to other subjects: city architecture, portraiture, fashion, still-life and the nude. He was included in the exhibition of the Helmut Newton Collection along with Brassaï, Diane Arbus, Franco Fontana, Horst P. Horst, Irving Penn, June Newton, Just Loomis, Man Ray, Mark Arbeit...

Outside the Synagogue Russian Judaica Oil Painting
By Emmanuel Snitkovsky
Located in Surfside, FL
This piece came from the collection of the Bezalel Art Gallery on the Lower East Side of New York City. Emmanuil Snitkovsky is an internationally known artist, sculpture and poet. Emmanuil Snitkovsky was born into a family of artists and scholars from the Odessa Art College in Russia. Immersed in the traditions of Russia art, he approaches form, line, space and color with relentless vision and impeccable technique. Two highly successful artists, the husband and wife team of Emmanuil and Janet Snitkovsky have exhibited a selection of eight large Judaic paintings at the Chabad Chassidic Art Institute (Chai Gallery) in Crown Heights. Three of those paintings are truly singular visions of Jewish Art that cause us to stop and reassess our preconceptions about the meaning and importance of their subjects. Emmanuil and Janet Snitkovsky were both born in the Ukraine in the 1930′s. Emmanuil was trained in Odessa in public monument art, and Janet majored in fashion at the Lvov Decorative Art Institute. After both narrowly survived the devastation of the Second World War in Stalin’s Russia, they began to collaborate on state sponsored art works in 1962. For ten years, they worked on grandiose public sculptural projects to commemorate the fallen Russian heroes of the Second World War in Moscow, Kiev, Tula and Kazan. They were exemplary Soviet Realists working for the Soviet regime. Eventually, this career became untenable for them, both as artists and as Jews, when they clashed with Soviet officialdom over a commission to commemorate the Babi-Yar massacre. The Soviets refused to acknowledge this massacre of 100,000 Jews and eventually suppressed the memorial. In 1978, Emmanuil and Janet arrived in New York and began to recreate their artistic lives. In the ensuing 25 years, they have been quite successful, exhibiting widely in the United States and Europe. They have nurtured a hybrid style of painting and sculpture called “Renaissance Revival” combining contemporary and classical subjects in a stylized realism that evokes both the American regionalist Thomas Hart Benton and the Italian Renaissance master Sandro Botticelli. The works are highly proficient, polished, and commercial productions in a quirky decorative style. They have continued to accept sculptural projects that have not shied away from kitschy realistic sculptures of Charlie Chaplin as “The Kid,” The Little Tramp” and Buster Keaton as “Cameramen.” In some ways, they have appropriated American culture just as they once accepted Soviet culture. Janet, a graduate of the Lvov College, was invited- by virtue of the high honors she achieved there- to matriculate at the Lvov University of Art. Such an opportunity is extremely rare for anyone, particularly for someone of Jewish descent. Their works of art are included in collections of the Japanese Imperial Family...

Homer Sykes Sykes's father, Homer Warwick Sykes, was a Canadian-born American of English extraction who worked for the China National Aviation Corporation in Shanghai; his mother, Helen Grimmitt, was Canadian-born and raised in Hong Kong. The couple were married in August 1947, but in June 1948, in an early stage of his wife's pregnancy, Homer was killed in an accident at Lunghua airfield. Helen returned to her family home in Vancouver, and the son was born three weeks later, in 1949.[1][2] When the boy's mother remarried in 1954, the family moved to England.[3] Homer was a keen photographer as a teenager, with a darkroom both at home and at boarding school. In 1968 he started a three-year course at the London College of Printing (LCP),[1][3] while sharing a house in St John's Wood.[4] In the summer vacation during his first year, he went to New York, and was impressed by the work of current photographers – Cartier-Bresson, Davidson, Friedlander, Frank, Uzzle and Winogrand – that he saw at the Museum of Modern Art.[3] Solo exhibitions "Traditional British Calendar Customs", Arnolfini Gallery (Bristol), 1977;[14] Side Gallery (Newcastle), 31 August – 25 September 1977.[15] "Shanghai Odyssey", Open Eye Gallery (Liverpool), 24 May – 20 June 2003.[14][16] Festival of Photography and Contemporary Art (Biella), 2005.[14] "On the Road Again", Hereford Town Hall (Hereford Photography Festival), 2002.[17] "Green Man and Friends, photographs from the 1970s", WPS (Hastings), 2009.[18] "England 1970–1980", Maison de la photographie Robert Doisneau (Gentilly, Paris), 27 June – 12 October 2014.[10][11][19][20] "My Britain 1970–1980", Les Douches la Galerie, Paris. 5 September – 31 October 2015.[21][22][23] "Once a Year – Homer Sykes", Lucy Bell Gallery, St Leonards-on-Sea, May–June 2021[24] Other exhibitions "Personal Views 1850–1970", British Council touring exhibition, 1970.[3] "Traditional Country Customs" (with work by Benjamin Stone), ICA (London), 1971.[3][14] "Young British Photographers", Museum of Modern Art (Oxford), 1971.[14] Exhibition of photographs by Stone and Sykes of festivals, customs and pageants, Southampton and Birmingham, 1973.[7] "Reportage Fotografen", Museum des 20. Operating within the framework of the theme, "To Safeguard Peace and the Future of Humanity", the program for this special year was composed of the three primary components: Peace and Disarmament, Peace and Development and Preparation for Life in Peace. Cristóbal Gabarrón is a celebrated Spanish artist known for his work with the United Nations whose personal convictions are based on the individual human life, and the coexistence and the development of human values. Artist statement: “There is nothing as pure and innocent as a child’s creative imagination. Children are the future of our societies. We learn a lot from each other when interacting across generations and cultures on such issues that bind us together, such as human rights,” Artist bio - Cristóbal Gabarrón was born in the town of Mula (Murcia) in 1945, although at the age of six he moved with his family to live in Valladolid. He dedicated himself to painting from a very young age performing his first exhibitions, at the Galería Castilla de Valladolid and at the Galería Macarrón in Madrid. His work evolved from figuration to informalism, to the abstracción "symbolic and "postmodern," a "symbolic." In 1967, at the age of 22, Gabarrón exhibited at the Leob Gallery in New York and the Arts Perspective Gallery in Paris. His work has been marked by his life experience, humanism and his nomadic personality, which give him a unique, very personal style. A creation in continuous experimentation and evolution with strokes from its multiple rooms and exhibitions in different parts of the world. He currently resides between Bueu, on the Ria de Pontevedra and Valladolid, although he continues to be connected to his place of origin, the city of Mula. He received his first artistic training in Valladolid before continuing his career in France, Italy and the United States. Gabarrón's work is focused on his interest in humanism, for people's lives in harmony with their natural environment, for their peaceful coexistence and the development of human values. Their collaboration with international organizations, such as the International Olympic Committee or the United Nations, has led to a very fruitful period that lasts, following the exhibition of the Universe of Light (Enlightened Universe) inaugurated on 24 October 2015 at the famous Central Park in New York, by the UN Secretary General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon on the 70th Anniversary of the creation of the United Nations and which every year travels cities from all over the world, to commemorate UN and Human Rights Day: Geneva (2016), Amsterdam (2017), Brussels (2018), Valladolid (2020), La Valeta (2022). His work has been the same center of analysis within retrospectives such as those dedicated to the Chelsea Art Museum, the IVAM, the Museum of Modern Art of Gdansk, in Poland, the National Museum of Art of China in Shanghai, or the Herrerian Patio Museum of Contemporary Spanish Art...
