Ah, that’s better! Good dog, come along!” John George Sowerby was born into a prosperous Gateshead family of glass manufactures and artists. He inherited the family business, the Ellison Glass Works, one of the world’s largest producers of pressed glass, where he introduced designs inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement. Initially he combined his energies at the glass works with his work as an illustrator and painter of landscapes and floral subjects with a Pre-Raphaelite intensity, strong colours and rich detail. He exhibited many of these paintings at the Royal Academy. In the 1880s he collaborated with Newcastle artist, Henry Hetherington Emmerson, on illustrations for the children’s books Afternoon Tea (1880) and The May Blossom (1881). Although were critically very well received but the publications were attacked by Kate Greenaway who considered them too close to her own work. Sowerby then went on to produce highly aesthetic illustrated books At Home (1881) and At Home Again (1883), with decorations by Thomas Crane. Gleeson White, editor of The Studio magazine stated that in Afternoon Tea Sowerby “set a new fashion for ‘aesthetic’ little quartos’ (The Studio, 1897). Roger Dixon in Belfast Publishing (Oxford University Press, 2011, p.79) considered these At Home and At Home Again to be “among the loveliest books ever produced.” Never very wise as a business man, in the early 1880s he left Ellison Glass Works being declared bankrupt in 1884. Pink and yellow rose blooms are depicted with black and white grapes and a pear on a marble topped table. Behind them, a basket of fruit containing plums and a nectarine can also be seen. Edward Ladell was born in Hasketon, Suffolk on 12 April, 1821 the son of Christmas Ladell a coachbuilder and his wife Mary Birch. He was a self-taught artist and initially worked in his father’s business in Colchester as an engraver. He is also believed to have worked as a pattern designer for a Flemish textile company in Colchester. In 1848 he married Julianna Roofe and they spent their married life living at East Hill in Colchester. During his spare time he began producing still life paintings in the Dutch traditions and in 1856 made his debut at the Royal Academy with a ‘Study from Nature’. He also exhibited at the British Institute from 1857 and the Royal Society of British Artists from 1858. Ladell’s exposure at the London galleries began earning him commissions and by 1861, he had become a full time artist. He was highly successful in his lifetime, earning many commissions and commanding high prices for his work. He became one of the best known still life painters of his generation. During the late 1860’s, after the death of his first wife and child, he began teaching art. One of his pupils was Ellen Maria Levett who he later married in 1878 and together they had a son. Walter Gay (1856 - 1937) Cardinal Flowers Still Life, June, 1875 Signed lower left; dated on the reverse Oil on board 24 3/4 x 7 1/8 inches Provenance: Private Collection, Brunswick, Maine Born in Hingham, Massachusetts, Walter Gay became a painter who specialized in interiors, particularly those of eighteenth-century French buildings. His style was traditional, and he ignored the influences of modernist paintings he saw while studying in Paris beginning 1876. He remained in Europe the rest of his life. In his compositions, the rooms are nearly always devoid of human presence but suggest that someone has been there. Many of his interiors are museum settings, and although he was not an impressionist, his work often had atmospheric effects. When Gay died in 1937, he was described in The New York Times as the "Dean of American Painters in France," where he and his Matilda moved in 1876. His first paintings there were genre subjects and realistic views of peasant life in Britanny, but he tired of these works, which he called "pot boilers." In the 1890s, he began his signature interiors, mostly rooms in fashionable houses of the Gays and their friends. Reproductions of many of these paintings were published in 1920 by Albert Gallatin, also a painter. The Gays, with a retinue of about twenty servants, loved old houses, and lived in an eighteenth-century apartment on the Left Bank in Paris from January through April and beginning 1904, in a chateau in the countryside at le Breau, near Fontainebleau. There they had 300 acres of grounds to roam. In 1907, they purchased this chateau which became quite a showplace and where they entertained extensively. However, during World War II, when Matilda was living there as a widow, German soldiers occupied the chateau, ruining much of the structure and plotting the destruction of the country the Gays loved...
