Jo Yarrington’s photographs, prints, works on paper, glass sculptures and architecturally-based installations have been shown in exhibitions at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Yale University, Cornell University, the Museum of Glass, the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park, Artists Space, St. John the Divine Cathedral, Grounds for Sculpture, the Museum of American Glass and ODETTA, among others. International exhibitions have included Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts Museum, Glasgow School of Art, Glasgow Cathedral, Glasgow University, Galeria Sala Uno and Centro de las Artes de Guanajuato. She represented the United States at the Sharjah Biennial, United Arab Emirates and participated in the Berlin Biennial. in 2010 she received the Bronze Prize, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Skopje, Macedonia. Yarrington is a recipient of artist grants and Fellowships from the Pollock Krasner Foundation, the New York Foundation for the Arts, the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and the Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism. She has received Residency Fellowships from the MacDowell Colony, the Museum of Glass, the Museum of American Glass, the Bridge Virtual Residency/ SciArt Center, the Lucile Walton Fellow/Mountain Lake Biological Station, the Virginia Center for Creative Arts, the Anderson Center and the Ucross Foundation, among others. International grants and fellowships have included the Banff Center for Arts and Creativity/Canada, SIMS Residency/ Iceland, Cill Rialaig Artists Residency/Ireland, the Burren College of Art Residency/Ireland and the American Scandinavian Foundation. She is a Professor of Visual and Performing Arts at Fairfield University and lives and works in New York City. STATEMENT In site-specific exhibitions, public art commissions, collaborative and individual projects Jo Yarrington has used varied combinations of glass, waxed surfaces, found artifacts and experimental analog photography to investigate the way we perceive – searching for, experimenting with and developing throughout a sensory-based vernacular. Her mostly translucent materials function as physical framework and symbolic membrane. Light, both natural and ambient, provides a kinetic or time-based element to her work. Scale and the integration of architecture are also pivotal components. In the 6-part installation for the two-person exhibition Illuminated, Yarrington continues her interest in the connections between vision, sound and language. Stanley Bleifeld was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Bleifeld earned bachelor of fine arts, bachelor of science in education and in 1949 a master of fine arts degree in painting at Tyler School of Art of Temple University. After a trip to Rome in 1959 or 1960 he gave up painting for sculpture. He began his fine-art career as a painter. However, a visit to Italy and exposure to the bronzes of Donatello, Michelangelo, and Ghiberti changed his direction He worked with the Art Foundry of Massimo del Chiaro and alongside artists such as Lucchesi, Harry Marinsky, Fernando Botero, Igor Mitoraj and Ivan Theimer. Many of his early pieces were religious subjects, and reflected both painting and sculptural techniques in bas reliefs* that had "liquid landscapes in undulating reliefs and free-flowing portraits reminiscent of classical fragments" (166-167). He later turned from these abstract pieces to more realistic figures in bronze. Bleifeld was a National Academician in Sculpture, and a member of the National Academy of Design, and helped set policy for that organization. He was also President of the National Sculpture Society. Past presidents of the society have included John Quincy Adams Ward, James Earle Fraser, Chester Beach, Wheeler Williams, Leo Friedlander, Neil Estern, and Cecil de Blaquiere Howard. The first woman to gain admission into the NSS was Theo Alice Ruggles Kitson, in 1893. She was followed a few years later by Enid Yandell and Bessie Potter Vonnoh in 1898; Janet Scudder in 1904; Anna Hyatt Huntington in 1905 and Evelyn Longman and Abastenia St. Leger Eberle in 1906. In 1946, Richmond Barthé was likely the first African-American to be admitted. In 1994, the NSS held their first exhibition outside the United States at the Palazzo Mediceo Di Seravezza in Italy. Titled “100 Years of the National Sculpture Society of the United States of America in Italy” it ran from the 16th of July through the 4th of September and was curated by Nicky and Stanley Bleifeld along with Costantino Paolicchi, Lodovico Gierut and Paolo Giorgi. Rudolf Kaesbach (1873 Gladbach - 1955 Berlin), Forest idyll, around 1915. Weight 4,6 kg, signed on the plinth "R.[udolf] KAESBACH". - a few rubbed areas, overall in excellent condition for its age - Soulmate - The bronze sculpture depicts a young woman in an intimate exchange with a deer that accompanies her. The animal pauses to turn toward her, while the nude beauty slows her pace to look into the deer's eyes and tenderly caress it with her hand. The woman and the deer are in inner harmony. Even though her lips remain motionless, she speaks the language of the animal with which she is deeply connected. The golden patina, which contrasts with the more naturalistic coloring of the deer, gives the young woman the appearance of a saint, even if she cannot be identified as such. At the same time, she evokes memories of Diana, the goddess of the hunt, or a nymph. But she lacks the ferocity. In her innocent naivety, she is more like a vestal virgin, who is not at home in the solitude of the forest. And yet, the young beauty, moving unclothed in the heart of nature, looks like a priestess with her hair tied up and a carefully carried bowl on her way to a sacred grove. In order to open up the above-mentioned associations, Kaesbach deliberately designed the female figure in such a way that she cannot be identified as a specific person. He has created an allegory of natural femininity, characteristic of Art Nouveau, in which the deer is far more than a companion animal. It displays the same gracefulness as the young woman, and the inner resemblance between the two makes the deer appear as her other self. In animal terms, it embodies her inner being, which also gives the deer an allegorical character. About the artist Rudolf Kaesbach studied sculpture at the Hanau Academy and worked in a bronze foundry in Paris in 1900. In order to work as an independent artist, he opened a workshop in Düsseldorf, where he cast bronzes from models he designed. In 1902 he made his debut at the German National Art Exhibition in Düsseldorf. The following year Kaesbach went to the academy in Brussels. There he was inspired by contemporary Belgian sculpture, especially the work of Constantin Meunier. He moved to Berlin, where he opened a studio in the villa district of Grunewald and devoted himself to life-size marble sculptures and the design of bronzes. From 1911, he regularly presented his works at the major art exhibitions in Berlin, as well as in Düsseldorf and Malmö. Between 1936 and 1939, he also created models for the Rosenthal porcelain factory. From 1939 to 1944, Kaesbach was represented at the major German art exhibitions in Munich. Zugleich ruft sie Erinnerungen an die Jagdgöttin Diana oder eine Nymphe hervor. Dafür fehlt ihr allerdings die Wildheit. In ihrer unschuldigen Naivität gemahnt sie vielmehr an eine Vestalin, die freilich nicht in der Waldeinsamkeit zu Hause ist. Und doch wirkt die sich unbekleidet im Herzen der Natur bewegende junge Schönheit wie eine Priesterin, die sich mit hochgebundenem Haar und der vorsichtig getragenen Schale und dem Wege zu einem Heiligen Hain befindet. Um die gennannten Assoziationen zu eröffnen, hat Kaesbach die Frauenfigur bewusst so gestaltet, dass sie nicht als konkrete Person identifizierbar ist. Damit hat er eine für den Jugendstil charakteristische Allegorie natürlicher Weiblichkeit geschaffen, bei der das Reh weit mehr als ein Begleittier ist. Es weist dieselbe grazile Anmut wie die junge Frau auf und der innere Gleichklag der beiden lässt das Reh als ihr anderen Ich erscheinen. Es verkörpert – ins Animalische übertragen - ihr inneres Wesen, wodurch auch dem Reh ein allegorischer Charakter zukommt. zum Künstler Rudolf Kaesbach studierte an der Akademie Hanau Bildhauerei und war im Jahr 1900 in einer Pariser Bronzegießerei tätig. This splendid sculpture represents Young Girl with a Goat (Amalthea and Jupiter's Goat), after the original by Pierre Julien commissioned by Louis XVI in 1785 and completed in 1787 for the cot of Queen Marie-Antoinette in Rambouillet. The work of the sculptor Pierre Julien decorated the interior of a grotto in a pavilion decorated with bas-reliefs by the same sculptor (acquired by the State by dation in 2003). The work was the main element of a rock basin, which was destroyed during the renovation of the gardens of the small castle. The same sculpture was seized during the Revolution and exhibited in the Louvre from 1829. The terracotta sketch, which belonged to the collector Ernst May, must have adorned his château de la Couharde (Yvelines) before entering the Louvre's collections in 1920. The bronze set with a beautiful gilded patina presented here is a work after the original by Pierre Julien (1731-1804) and dates from the 19th century (around 1850). The superbly preserved sculpture, which has belonged to the same family since its acquisition, is presented on its original base in grey serpentine marble. The quality of this work is doubly certified: - on the one hand it is stamped with a round stamp at the top "A. This stamp is a sign of high quality. Achille Collas (1794 - 1859) was the French engineer, engraver and illustrator, inventor among other things of the patented mathematical reduction process of the 19th century to reproduce sculpted objects in reduction, which was very successful. He was awarded a prize at the 1855 exhibition: his "Procédé mécanique", the name under which he prints all his productions, is easily recognisable by the finesse of its execution and by the famous stamp which appears on the base (terrace) of this sculpture. - On the other hand, an important signature is found on the terrace of the sculpture "F. Barbedienne Fondeur", founder. In 1844, Achille Collas, in order to protect his invention, formed the Société Collas et Barbedienne (Paris) with the art founder Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810-1892), which began to produce and sell famous but smaller sculptures in plaster, wood, bronze or ivory. The first object to be marketed was the Venus de Milo after the original in the Louvre Museum. Other sculptures such as the sculpture of George Washington, of which a bronze bust was made by the Barbedienne & Process Collas foundry, are currently in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. At the 1889 Universal Exhibition in Paris, the Barbedienne company again presented a large number of its compositions, including the large neo-Renaissance clock of 1878. This clock, which was part of the Leblanc-Barbedienne estate, was donated by his heirs to the city of Paris, and is kept in the city hall. Pierre Julien (20 June 1731 - 17 December 1804) was a French neo-classical sculptor who worked in the full range of rococo and neoclassical styles. He had an early apprenticeship in Le Puy-en-Velay, near his native village of Saint-Paulien, and then at the École de Dessin in Lyon, before entering the Paris workshop of Guillaume Coustou le Jeune. In 1765, he won the Prix de Rome for sculpture with a bas-relief panel depicting a subject from Antiquity and entered the Royal School for Protected Pupils, which offered a special curriculum under the direction of the painter Louis-Michel van Loo. He was a boarder at the Académie de France in Rome from 1768 to 1773, where he was influenced by the wave of neoclassicism affecting his fellow students. As boarders were required to do, he sent back to France a slightly reduced marble copy of the so-called Cleopatra, the Sleeping Ariadne from the Vatican, which survives in Versailles. Back in France and with his former master, he worked on the sculpture of the mausoleum of Louis, the Grand Dauphin, in the cathedral of Sens. After a failed attempt in 1776, with his Ganymede, he was accepted by the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in 1778, with a Dying Gladiator. He was appointed one of the first members of the Institut de France in 1795, and knight of the Legion of Honour in 1804. He was commissioned by the Count of Angiviller, director of the King's Buildings, on behalf of Louis XVI, to paint the figures for a series of life-size portraits of the great men of France: he produced a Jean de La Fontaine and a Nicolas Poussin, whom he chose to depict in a nightgown, similar to the draperies of a Roman toga. While fulfilling commissions in Paris, for the church of Sainte-Geneviève (now the Panthéon, Paris), or for the Pavillon de Flore in the Louvre, he sculpted in 1785 a virtuoso marble set representing the nymph Amalthée and Jupiter's nurse goat for the Queen's Dairy at the Château de Rambouillet; for his model, he adapted the pose of the famous Venus of the Capitoline.
