The pictures you see here are not, as you might think, photographs of wildflowers. They are images of the remarkably lifelike, painstakingly detailed art of Trailer McQuilkin, whose wildflower sculptures are a blend of several artistic techniques. The product of this art form is unique; each sculpture is one of a kind, with its own individuality and its own beauty. A native of New Orleans, McQuilkin has lived and worked in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, for the past 35 years. In 1969 the artist began experimenting with methods of creating metal wildflower sculpture. He soon found that imitating nature − which many have held is the chief function of art − is a difficult process. He steadily gained mastery of this new complex form and continues today to hone his skills, refine his materials and techniques while expanding his vision of the next sculpture. McQuilkin uses sheet copper, copper wire, metal primer, oil paints, and natural materials in his work. His techniques include cutting, soldering, incising, and painting. Each step is performed with uncompromising attention to detail. Each sculpture has special challenges. It takes from two to five months to complete each piece. A careful examination of the finished sculpture reveals the tiniest fibers, the slightest discoloration and even an occasional insect-bitten leaf. His work is a completely original documentation of nature, trompe l’oeil art in the best sense. McQuilkin, who is largely self-taught, has achieved the highest level of skill and artistry. Born in 1974 in Mexico, Hugo Urrutia is a multidisciplinary artist-designer, interested in the cross-pollination between art and architecture. His artwork challenges the notion of what constitutes a piece of art. As a graduate and active member of the Architectural Association in the United Kingdom, Urrutia's work creates a distinct spatiality located at the interstice of art and architecture. His work explores and uses technology for design and fabrication, with a sensitive and conscious reminder of the creativity of human endeavor. This original artwork is created with oil lacquer paint on carved Baltic birch. This wall sculpture measures 29 inches high by 38 inches wide and has a depth of 5 inches. In this series titled "Flexible Rigids", Urrutia explores sculptural forms that simulate smooth harmonic movements of a flexible surface, initiating the process from a “rigid “surface. He died in 1981 in Santa Cruz, California. As a young person in Los Angeles, Joe Funk showed an interest in art. He studied at the Otis and Chouinard Art Institutes and worked on several murals throughout Los Angeles in the Works Progress Administration. He served in the United States Army, from 1943 to 1946, in Korea and Okinawa a s a heavy anti-aircraft artillery mechanic and instructor, warehouseman, and artist, publicist, and graphic designer for special events at Headquarters Company, Asiatic Command. At the ASCOM University in Korea, he was an instructor in pencil sketching. It was during his time in Korea that he developed a lifelong interest in Asian art. Using the G.I. Bill, after the Korean War, he earned a Masters Degree in fine art from the University of Southern California. In the 1950s, Joe met Lynton Kistler and worked at Kistler’s facility in Los Angeles, the only lithographic press open for business on the west coast at that time. During his time as an apprentice, Joe printed for many well-known artists, such as Jean Charlot, man Ray, Max Ernst, Emerson Woelffer and June Wayne. When June Wayne opened the Tamarind Lighography Workshop in Los Angeles in 1960, she offered the status of fellow printer to Joe Funk. At Tamarind, he began work printing lithographs for guest artists and training future printmakers. After Tamarind, Joe became the technical director at Kanthos Press from 1961-1962, where he printed for Jose Cuevasand and Aubrey Schwartz. In 1964, he became co-owner of Joseph Press and was printmaker for Sam Francis, Arnold Belkin and Rico Lebrun. From 1962-1964, Joe taught at the Chouinart Art Institute. Joe established a non-profit corporation in Venice, California in the late 1960s, called Joseph Graphics. Peter Wegner (born 1963) is an American artist whose works consist of painting, photograph, collage, prints, artist's books, and large-scale installations Born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Peter Wegner earned his BA at Yale University. He works in multiple media, ranging from paintings and photography to large-scale installations and wall works. His pieces are included in major public and private collections worldwide. He currently lives and works in Berkeley, California. A core theme in Wegner's work is color. Professor, author, and critic Eve Meltzer noted in a 2002 review that “color may be the… center” of his entire practice. The artist first began deconstructing the subject in the late 1990s with his "Remarks on Color" series, which used commercial paint chip samples as their starting point. Another theme identified by experts is Wegner's engagement with architecture. For example, in his photography series "Buildings Made of Sky," Wegner reverses urban streetscapes to reveal how skyscrapers shape the open-air spaces between one another into skyscraper-like forms of their own. Wegner has also often pushed the construction of his works in an architectural direction, presenting paintings in the form of leaning columns, complex lattices, and multi-layered scrims. Huldisch noted that “[h]is stacks, grids, and lattice structures reveal both an interest in the forms of Minimalism and a rejection of the stringent doctrine that predicated them." Wegner's early work focuses on everyday artifacts embedded in popular culture, including typography specimens (the basis for the "American Types" series), commercial paint chips (in the "Remarks on Color" series), and security envelopes (in the "Security" series). Wegner produced in 2005 the "Lever Labyrinth," a human-scale maze composed of 2.2 million sheets of stacked paper––all in various shades of green, creating columns of subtly gradating color––constructed inside the Lever House building. In 2008, Wegner executed the major paper installation "GUILLOTINE OF SUNLIGHT, GUILLOTINE OF SHADE" at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The piece consisted of 1.4 millions sheets of die-cut paper in 40 hues, arranged to create two 12’ x 26.5’ x 7" color gradations inside the museum: a wall progressing from blue to yellow in one gallery, and a wall progressing from yellow to red in another. Around this same time, Wegner introduced two new elements into his work: time and neon. He combined both in 2007 to create “THE UNITED STATES OF NOTHING,” which included time-controlled neon signage showing the name, latitude, and longitude of every U.S. city that invokes the concept of nothingness. He has showed at William Griffin Gallery. The gallery has featured solo exhibitions by James Turrell, Richard Long, Robert Rauschenberg, David Lynch, Ed Ruscha, Richard Serra, Tony Smith, Peter Wegner, Greg Colson, Liza Ryan and others. Deborah Freedman is a painter who lives and works in New York City.
