This ceremonial mask was created by an unknown artist in the Yaka tribe of Africa. This mask is made out of carved wood, plant fibers, and painted intricately. This mask is mounted on five steel rods and has a base. 26" x 14" x 15" The Yaka are an African ethnic group numbering around 300,000 found in southwestern Democratic Republic of the Congo, with Angola border to their west. The Yaka are notable for their arts and handicrafts. They make statues, portraits, baskets, carved objects, masks, tools for cooking, building, hunting, fishing or entertaining with additions of instruments such as drums. Inspired by amateur archaeologists such as Heinrich Schliemann who discovered Troy and by past elaborate hoaxes like that of the Piltdown Man, Joshua travels the world performing staged archaeological excavations exposing the malleability of our history. During these performances he discovers his own versions of historical artifacts, crafted from objects from his youth--such as baseball cards, G.I. Joe action figures, POGS, and various other toys and items. His discoveries and claims, while false and absurdly comical, are based on real research. Joshua Goode: Born in Fort Worth, Texas in 1981, Joshua Goode is researching and developing mythic historical misinterpretations and manipulations in an effort to expose the malleability of our past, present and future. His alternate history and mythology preserve memories of childhood ranch life in Texas by reimagining objects and imagery from his youth as iconic ancient artifacts. Having studied history and worked as an archaeologist on many actual excavations, he conducts staged excavations around the world, working with the community as a performance. The constructed artifacts of his invented civilization mix fact and fiction to appropriate and distort the history and myths of each region he engages. Patinaed Steel with Redwood Handle David Tanych has been building objects since his father gave him a saw, hammer, nails and a block of wood at the age of 10. A veteran home and furniture builder, David turned his interest in design and fabrication from the functional and practical to the imaginative and artistic. Interested in welding and the properties of metal, David attended two summer sessions in blacksmithing at the Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina, where he began to connect to a medium much different than wood. Intrigued and inspired by the strength and flexibility of steel, Tanych started using it to construct functional objects such as tables, picture frames, and garden pergolas. As his skill progressed, Tanych began building huge outdoor steel sculptures. Likened to the work of veteran sculptor Claes Oldenburg, Tanych's most recent pieces are big and bold, representing everyday objects such as a skeleton key and matching keyhole, and a set of three jacks and a ball. The results are fun and playful, instantly bringing the viewer back to a time when these items were common place. When complete, the sculptures are acid etched, allowing them to rust naturally and adding a textural dimension to their unique charm. Tanych’s work alters the environment in which they are placed, in a way that could not be otherwise realized. Tanych’s works have been featured in many publications including Architectural Digest, Dwell Magazine, Forbes Life, the Time Square kiosk. There are two Little Oil installations available with 6 sculptures each on top of LED light boxes. Katherine Jackson has been working with glass and light together for many years, Recently, she's been making glass castings of vintage oil cans, and displaying them -- singly, in small groupings, or in vitrines -- on light boxes. So far she has created about 90, each one unique. The series is called Little Oil, alluding to Big Oil, and sometimes Small Oils, as in oil painting. But “oil” can mean many things. It has been a source of light (sometimes from unconscionable sources) since ancient times as well as a source of eternal light in many faith traditions. Set atop lightboxes, where each work glows from within, these pieces can simply seem like vessels of light itself. At times, they appear to me to transcend their relation to oil altogether, appearing anthropomorphic or creaturely, even biological. These days, I think of them as archeological artifacts, relics of a past, oil-based, civilization.
