La Rentree au Seminaire

La Rentree au Seminaire

By Jean-Emile Laboureur

Located in New York, NY

Jean-Emile Laboureur (1877-1943), La Rentree au Seminaire, 1897, woodcut, signed in ink lower right and inscribed “tire a 15 ex.” [also with monogram in the plate]. Reference: Laboureur 566, only state. In good condition, with some staining toward margin edge not affecting image, tack-holes at corners, 4 3/8 x 4 3/8, the sheet 9 5/8 x 8 1/2 inches. A fine impression, printed on a grey/green wove paper. A very early woodcut; the first time that Laboureur used a monogram within the plate. This woodcut was made shortly after Laboureur learned printmaking from the famed printmaker – and woodcut specialist – Auguste Lepere; and the composition, with its ordering of a mass of marchers, appears to be influenced by Felix Valloton...

"Elizabeth Stein Gallery" Lithograph Exhibition Poster

By Ilya Bolotowsky

Located in Milwaukee, WI

"Elizabeth Stein Gallery A/P" is a color lithograph poster. This piece features an abstract and geometric design in yellow. Unsigned. 40" x 26" Born in Russia in 1907, Ilya Bolotowsky left his native country in his early childhood. The family was forced to emigrate as a result of his parent’s anti-Communist sentiments. They traveled first to Constantinople, then settled in New York City in 1923. Bolotowsky enrolled at the National Academy of Design in 1924. He tried out many styles in this period, ranging from the representational and classical to the abstract and expressionistic. In the early 1930s he became a designer of textiles. In 1932 Bolotowsky spent ten months in Europe. Although he was already familiar with prevailing modernist movements, the opportunity to study a wide range of these works and to meet some of the artists who had made them affected Bolotowsky profoundly. As a result of this trip, Bolotowsky began to synthesize aspects of Cubism with the abstract Surrealism of artists like Miro and Arp. These softer, floating forms gave way to a rectilinear geometry as he became more influenced by the Constructivists and Mondrian. Upon his return to the United States, Bolotowsky married his fellow painter Esphyr Slobodkina...

Martin worked as the assistant to legendary artist Sam Gilliam for 12 years in his D.C. studio, after graduating from Carnegie Mellon where Sam was his Masters Mentor and guide. Over the past decade, he has incorporated mixed media and found objects into his abstract expressionist oil paintings on canvas, introducing new textural quality similar to Gilliam arts, which he helped to originate while his assistant. Martin received a B.F.A. degree from SUNY Purchase where he was inspired by figurative and abstract expressionism which evolved into his own style which Sam discovered in recruiting him to come to Pittsburgh to study for his M.F.A. degree with him where he credits his further artistic development with Gilliam. His works have been acquired by corporate patrons such as the Estée Lauder Companies, Eli Lilly and Company, Citigroup, Agatha Gund (past Chr of M.O.M.A) and Bill Kurtis TV Productions , who produced a TV special on A&E Channel entitled, "The Shattered Mind." His work has been featured in both group and solo exhibitions and presented two solo exhibitions at Fountain House Gallery in support of mental health. Gerd Leufert Title: Erebos Signed, titled, dated ‘91 and inscribed P/A in pencil (lower center) Screenprint on paper 23⅝ by 22⅜ in. / 60 by 56.8 cm. Executed in 1991, this work is an artist’s proof from an edition of 35 plus 1 artist’s proof. Provenance: Private Collection, Venezuela - Acquired from the above by the present owner - Sotheby's Auction “The first duty of the creator: restlessness,” Gerd Leufert wrote in 1985, looking back on his 30-year career as an artist, designer, museum worker, and professor of art in Venezuela.1 Bridging the worlds of commerce and culture in Caracas, Leufert’s impact on art and design owed to his interdisciplinary approach: the influence of cutting-edge developments in abstract art appeared in his graphic design, while the efficiency and bold contrast of mid-century design characterized his paintings. An immigrant born in German-controlled Lithuania at the cusp of the first World War, Leufert studied arts and design in Hannover, Mainz, and, finally, in Munich with the German typographer Fritz H...
