Conceptual Art

CONCEPTUAL STYLE

In 1967, artist Sol LeWitt wrote that in “Conceptual art the idea or concept is the most important aspect of the work.” He was giving a name to an art movement that had emerged in the 1960s in which artists were less focused on their medium being something traditionally “artistic” and instead engaged in using any object, movement, form, action or place to express an idea.

LeWitt’s work was featured alongside an assemblage of notes, drawings and outlines by other artists in “Working Drawings and Other Visible Things on Paper Not Necessarily Meant to Be Viewed as Art,” a groundbreaking show at New York City’s School of Visual Arts curated by Mel Bochner, another leading exponent of Conceptualism. Building on radical 20th-century statements, like Fountain (1917) by French artist Marcel Duchamp, Conceptual artists around Europe and North and South America were not interested in the commercial art scene and rather directly challenged its systems and values.

Stretching into the 1970s, this movement has also been called Post-Object art and Dematerialized art. Conceptual art reflected a larger era of social and political upheaval. Pieces associated with the style range from Roelof Louw’s Soul City (Pyramid of Oranges) (1967) — a work of installation art that sees fresh oranges stacked into a pyramid from which visitors are allowed to take one orange away — to On Kawara’s “Today” series, which saw the Japanese artist carefully painting a date in white acrylic on canvases consisting of a single color from 1966 to his death in 2014. Artists such as Ed Ruscha, who created the Twentysix Gasoline Stations book — a collection of photos of gas stations that is widely said to be the first modern artists’ book — made photography a major platform for Conceptual art, as did Bruce Nauman, who burned one of Ruscha's books and then photographed it for his own.

Conceptual art’s legacy of questioning artistic authorship, ownership and how to work with complex ideas of space and time had a significant influence on the decades of culture that followed, and it continues to inform art today.

The collection of Conceptual photography, paintings and sculptures on 1stDibs includes artworks by John Baldessari, Jenny Holzer, Lawrence Weiner, Joseph Kosuth and others.

Axel Crieger Audrey Hepburn Fotocollage Print "Fragility Adored" Ltd Ed

By Axel Crieger

Located in Detroit, MI

SALE ONE WEEK ONLY "Fragility Adored" a Fotocollage print on photographic paper by Axel Crieger (1955 - ) of an Audrey Hepburn publicity photo for "Sabrina" now placed in a cafe. It is mounted on upper edges of sheet under paste-partout, monogrammed and numbered #77/99 in a felt-tip pen on the lower right. He has signed it both on the photo and on the surrounding mat. Alex Crieger is a world-reknown artist, designer and photographer. He lives and works in Los Angeles. His digital paintings have a rich and profound pictorial space that invites the viewer into it and makes him/her a silent participant of the story. His digital collaged images depict celebrities in dreamlike settings as advertisement of luxury products giving the images an original new look. Alex’s digital paintings are composed of a variety of photographic quotes, designs, drawings and special effects to create photographic images he has not always taken but collaged into new uniquely composed settings. Crieger is a photographer who makes art photographs we wish to be real. He’s created compositions of Steve McQueen or Brigitte Bardot that are more beautiful than the truth. A combination of sketches, digital effects and a spectacular design yield classic photographs that have never been photographed. For example, Brigitte still exudes in Paris and an eternally young James Dean poses for a propeller plane. Crieger has already produced several exhibitions at international art shows and galleries. Many museums of contemporary art also exhibit his work.   He studied visual communications and has worked as a photographer, director and designer for international clients in New York, Los Angeles, Paris, London and Milan. His work as garnered critical acclaim and numerous awards and is produced in small editions. In addition to photography, Crieger also worked as a director and designer for international clients in New York, Los Angeles, Paris, London and Milan. He has created advertisements, exhibitions and a variety of designs and large paintings. Alex Crieger even published the book American Night...

Inviting the accidental while painting, the artist's materials continue to reveal limitless possibilities for improvisation, like jazz music. Influenced by scientific theories-both real and imagined, kitsch, music, decorative art and indigenous textiles, Fagan's abstract paintings and interactive performance build connections between color and surface to sound. This exploration has led to creating a series of interactive games with viewers, the most recent being The Alphabet Game. To play, viewers select, from colored squares, the color(s) that best represent each note in the familiar ABC Song melody. Through these playful interventions their thoughts about color and music are explored in-depth. Documenting their responses in the form of photographs and notes in journals, Fagan has compiled the results of fifteen artists who played the Alphabet Game during a lecture on color where the artist was the guest presenter in order to create this particular painting. Fagan distilled the data gathered and painted this visualization of a color/sound alphabet based on the colors selected by this artist's group. These alphabet paintings introduce a wonderful completion to this pseudo-scientific investigation and celebrate painting...

She is a Professor of Visual and Performing Arts at Fairfield University and lives and works in New York City. STATEMENT In site-specific exhibitions, public art commissions, collaborative and individual projects Jo Yarrington has used varied combinations of glass, waxed surfaces, found artifacts and experimental analog photography to investigate the way we perceive – searching for, experimenting with and developing throughout a sensory-based vernacular. Her mostly translucent materials function as physical framework and symbolic membrane. Light, both natural and ambient, provides a kinetic or time-based element to her work. Scale and the integration of architecture are also pivotal components. In the 6-part installation for the two-person exhibition Illuminated, Yarrington continues her interest in the connections between vision, sound and language. In Mute-ability: Compositions 1 – 6, her title for this light-based comprehensive work, she combines the words mute and malleability. The work focuses on found piano rolls, a music storage medium, originally conceived as coded notations or ‘note control data’ for music produced in pneumatic player pianos...

Mario Segundo Perez Argentine, 1960–2018 Nachimiento Ink on Paper Dimensions: 7.5 X 9.75 with frame. sheet is 5 X 7 Does not appear to be signed on front (not examined out of frame. might be signed verso) Provenance: The Estate of Theodore A Bonin (Ted Bonin was a principal in Alexander and Bonin, a New York gallery known for its diverse slate of conceptual artists. He started at Marlborough gallery London in the 60s, then in partnership with Brooke Alexander. In its stable were a host of esteemed artists: Willie Cole, Rita McBride, John Ahearn, Paul Thek, Doris Salcedo, Eugenio Dittborn, Dalton Paula, and Rigoberto Torres, Mona Hatoum and Emily Jacir.) Mario Pérez was born in San Juan, Argentina in 1960. The second of seven children, and the son of a housepainter. He obtained his degree in Visual Arts at Universidad Nacional de San Juan in Argentina. A draughtsman and painter. His style was magic realist or fantastic realism In 2003, Pérez was the recipient of a Pollock Krasner Foundation grant, one of his greatest achievements. He also had the honor of being part of the National Exhibition “200 Years-200 Masters of Argentinean Art”, commemorating the country’s bicentennial. Mario has won international distinctions such as the Cecilia Grierson Award at the Salón Nacional de Pintura in La Plata in 1992; the Marco A. Roca Award at the Salón Pro-Arte, Córdoba, also in 1992; and the first prize in the LXXXVIII Salón Nacional de Pintura in Buenos Aires in 1999. His art often features tiny figures in immense landscapes, and unique backgrounds. It has elements of Conceptual art. His work has been regularly featured in leading auction houses like Christie’s and Sotheby’s in New York, and private and public collections. The magic realism of Mario Segundo Pérez is characteristic of a chiefly Latin-American concept in painting, literature and film that incorporates fantastic or mythical elements into an otherwise realistic scenario. Coined in the 1940s by Cuban novelist Alejo Carpentier, the term often is used when referring to the Colombian novelist Gabriel Garcia Márquez, winner of the 1982 Nobel Prize in Literature. Influences include Frida Kahlo and George Tooker. He was in shows with Ana Fabry and Eduardo Esquivel. Paintings by Pérez are included in numerous private and public collections, including the Ciudad Casa de Gobierno (the Buenos Aires City Hall); the University of Miami School of Architecture, and the College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts (CARTA) at Florida International University. He has been in shows with Juan Cardenas, Anna Mercedes Hoyos, Ignacio Iturria, Alejandro Obregon, Domingo Ravenet, Arnaldo Roche, Edgar Negret, Fidelio Ponce de Leon, Ricardo Martinez, Damian Gonzalez, Jorge Jimenez Deredia, Victor...
