Finished, coloured, backed and varnished print likely to be a spare sheet (over production), which were never used. Possibly at some later stage, Karl experimented by partially painting the back with divering number of layers of pink. Held up as finished cards the pink would then shine through the varnished card. By holding up the sheet, this effect can be observed in areas with and without the pink backing.
Sheets is in good condition and suitable to be framed.
Karl was a brilliant playing card maker and certainly one of the most genius artist-craftsmen I had the pleasure to learn about his work and know.
He could do it all: Come up with the tale, weave meaning(s) into it, fill it with spirited characters of his liking, draw it, etch it, print it, colour it and handcraft the inks, paper and card into wondersome packs of playing cards, each of them living in their own, most exquisitely crafted boxes. Every pack a magical marvel, filled with the spirit of this genius card maker … All this he did using his Adana printing press, very simple hand tools and great skill.
When Karl closed down his studio in St.Peter’s Terrace in Bath, England and moved to Poplar Close, he sold off work for which he felt he no longer wanted to be the custodian. So a number of prints reached the market then.

Artist Biography: Born in New York City in 1923, Herb Mears was interested in art from a young age. He studied under Fernand Leger in Paris and went on to paint and study in various studios in France and Italy before his arrival in Houston in 1951. With colleague David Adickes, whom he had met in Paris, Mears decided to open an art school. Their Studio of Contemporary Arts finally settled in an old building on Main Street with Mears and Adickes hoping to give classes to potential students. However money was tight and Mears found himself as a draftsman for Houston Lighting and Power Company, a job he excelled at and enjoyed. Later, Mears was involved in the Contemporary Arts Association, frequently making trips to ensure security in addition to enjoying the art scene the Association provided. From the CAA to the Art League of Houston and the Museum of Fine Arts, Mears began to gain recognition. An abstract, or non-objective piece as he called it, won a prize at a competition held by the Museum of Fine Arts, earning him a teaching position at the Museum School. A female and male Goosander bird on ice floes. In the center of the painting there is a smaller opening in the ice covered waters. This painting, by Christian Berg (1893-1976) is quite interesting and unusual for his works. It is signed "Ch. Berg" and dated 1918. Berg is mostly famous for his sculptures which was to become his signum works later in his life. He is known primarily for his abstract artworks. He was educated at the Technical School and Althin's painting school in Stockholm 1911–1914. In the years 1914–1917 he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and started with animal painting in the spirit of Bruno Liljefors. Our painting is from this period just after he finished his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. In 1921, he studied in Berlin and Dresden which was followed by a trip to Egypt in 1925. In the same year he moved to Paris and had a studio on rue Guénégaud. He studied with André Lhote and his interest in cubism was awakened. Here we have the somewhat unusual, yet typical subject matter François-Édouard Picot was interested in depicting. Shown is a scene from an ancient Greek comedy play. The previous owner has noted on the back, that this image was copied from an ancient Greek stone relief.
François-Édouard Picot was born on the 10th of October in 1786 in Paris, France. He studied with various masters and became well known for his historical and mythological subjects. In 1812 he won the second prize in the Prix de Rome competition and after that success, went on to exhibit at the Paris Salon, where in the year 1819 he won a first-class medal for his neoclassical L'Amour et Psyché, which today hangs in the Louvre in Paris. He regularly exhibited his work in the salon up to 1839. He taught several young great artists at his elitist studio and was known for accepting only very few students, which included William Bouguereau, Gustave Moreau, Cabanel and Paul Seignac...
