This particular ceramic was from the collection of Jane and Richard Knight’s Estate. Jane Knight was a famous fiber and textile artist. Richard was a photographer who worked for Eliel Saarinen and Alexander Girard. The Knights and Girard became close friends and it was Girard who gifted “Santa Cruz De Las Huertas Jalisco” to the Knights. Alexander Girard left his personal collection to the Museum of International Folk Art, Santa Fe, NM. The Girards eventually amassed a collection of more than 106,000 objects from across the globe. Their 1978 gift of this collection to the Museum of International Folk art quintupled the size of their collection and prompted the construction of a new wing, which opened in 1982 and houses a mere 10% of the Girard Collection in the permanent exhibition Multiple Visions: A Common Bond, which was designed by Alexander Girard himself. This collection includes numerous multiples and is notable for its great breadth, including traditional arts, popular arts, and paper ephemera. “I believe we should preserve this evidence of the past, not as a pattern for sentimental imitation,” Girard once said, “but as nourishment for the creative spirit of the present.” Indeed, folk art was an important inspiration for Girard’s design work. It is numbered, titled and signed 136/300, “Private Parties”, Jean Sariano in the lower margin, all in pencil. The print measures 17” x 31” the sheet and 10” x 23” the plate. It is in excellent, pristine, never-framed condition. Born in 1943 in Oran, Algeria, Frenchman Jean Sariano studies art at L’Ecole Régionale et Municipale Des Beaux Arts d’Oran. He is forced to escape the Algerian Revolution to Vichy, France in 1956 with his mother and five siblings. From there, Sariano moves to Paris to pursue his art studies at the world famous L’Ecole Nationale Supérieure Des Beaux Arts de Paris. This is an original 19th century hand-colored folio-sized lithograph entitled "Gallinula Chloropus" (Moorhen) by John Gould, published in his "Birds of Great Britain", published in London between 1862 and 1873. The print, which was drawn by Gould and Henry Richter and lithographed by Walter & Cohn, depicts a family of Moorhens, including two adults and six babies in a beautiful landscape. The adults are in the water and the babies are lying on the leaves a flowering lilly pad. This striking Gould hand-colored moorhen family lithograph is augmented with gum-arabic paint. The sheet measures 14.88" high and 21.75" wide. It is in excellent condition, other than a spot in the upper portion of the right margin and two small spots at the edge of the lower margin on the left. The original descriptive text pages from Gould's 19th century publication are included. There are several other unframed Gould hummingbird lithographs available on our 1stdibs and InCollect storefronts. Two or more of these striking lithographs would make an attractive display grouping.
