Gerlach's Allegorien Folio, plate #58: "Sculpture" Lithograph, Gustav Klimt.

By Gustav Klimt

Located in Palm Beach, FL

As an artist trained in the applied arts, Gustav Klimt valued all forms of art, including the graphic arts. This final design from 1896 for inclusion in Allegorien published by Gerlach & Schenk demonstrates respect for artistic precedent and for a wide range of media and technique. The publication was printed in an unknown number of copies. Klimt’s rendering in latin of the title, “SCVLPTVR.,” with three-dimensional effect on the wall, is a figurative allusion to this medium as well as a literal reference to Ancient Rome. By doing the same with his signature and date in roman numerals on the right hand side of the image, Klimt places himself, The Artist, firmly in this linear and legitimizing context of art history and as its modern standard-bearer. Playing on Classical mythology and the story of Pygmalion, in which a statue comes to life, Klimt presents his modern Venus holding an apple. Klimt’s Venus exhibits a curvilinear softness; there are no angles. Klimt deftly shows the possibilities in a graphic image to give life to dark, wavy hair and tenderness to swelling breasts and belly. To further emphasize the allegory of thriving modern art, he contrasts his Venus with the cold, hard ancient classical head whose eyes are vacuous and whose hair is but a stylized mass of curls. Klimt’s living Venus stands in front of the large bust and large classical pillar upon which is a sculpture of a Sphinx and a Greek Attic bust. As if a gallery to represent sculpture’s “best of” through the ages, the upper horizontal panel includes bust depictions in marble, cast metal and wood...

Man Ray, Rayograph, from Electa Editrice, 1980 (after)

By Man Ray

Located in Southampton, NY

This exquisite heliogravure after Man Ray (1890–1976), titled Rayograph, originates from the 1980 folio Man Ray, Electa Editrice Portfolios. Published by Gruppo Editoriale Electra, Milano, and printed by Gruppo Editoriale Electra, Milano, 1980. This image exemplifies Man Ray’s pioneering “rayograph” technique—a cameraless photographic process in which objects were placed directly onto photosensitive paper and exposed to light, creating luminous abstract compositions that fused chance, intuition, and surrealist invention. Through this groundbreaking process, Man Ray transformed photography into pure visual poetry, redefining its potential as a form of modern art. Executed as a heliogravure on velin paper, this work measures 15.75 x 11.75 inches. Unsigned and unnumbered as issued. The edition exemplifies the refined craftsmanship of Gruppo Editoriale Electra, Milano. Artwork Details: Artist: After Man Ray (1890–1976) Title: Rayograph Medium: Heliogravure on velin paper Dimensions: 15.75 x 11.75 inches (40.01 x 29.84 cm) Inscription: Unsigned and unnumbered as issued Date: 1980 Publisher: Gruppo Editoriale Electra, Milano Printer: Gruppo Editoriale Electra, Milano Condition: Well preserved, consistent with age and medium Provenance: From the folio Man Ray, Electa Editrice Portfolios, published and printed by Gruppo Editoriale Electra, Milano, 1980 Notes: Excerpted from the folio (translated from Italian), Limited edition of M examples, drawn in heliogravure on special paper, designed specifically for the Portfolios Electa. Gruppo Editoriale Electra/Milan. Printed in Italy. About the Publication: The Man Ray, Electa Editrice Portfolio (1980) was published by Gruppo Editoriale Electra in Milan as part of the distinguished Electa Portfolios series, which celebrated the masters of 20th-century photography through the artisanal process of heliogravure printing. This edition was dedicated to Man Ray’s seminal body of photographic work from 1920 to 1934—an era in which he redefined modern image-making through technical invention, surrealist experimentation, and intellectual daring. Produced in collaboration with leading photographic historians and Italian master printers, the portfolio was printed on specially manufactured velin paper designed exclusively for the Electa Portfolios, ensuring tonal precision and textural depth true to the artist’s originals. The publication represents one of the most refined posthumous tributes to Man Ray’s legacy, combining Italian craftsmanship with avant-garde vision to preserve the luminous complexity of his photographs. Created with the same devotion to innovation and elegance that characterized Man Ray’s own practice, this edition remains an important intersection of fine art publishing and modernist history. About the Artist: Man Ray (1890–1976) was an American-born painter, sculptor, photographer, filmmaker, and conceptual visionary whose radical imagination and technical innovation transformed modern art and established him as one of the leading figures of the 20th century. Born Emmanuel Radnitzky in Philadelphia, he became a central force in both the Dada and Surrealist movements, defying artistic boundaries and redefining the relationship between art, technology, and the unconscious. After early involvement in New York’s avant-garde with Francis Picabia and Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray moved to Paris in 1921, where he joined a revolutionary circle of artists including Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, and Marcel Duchamp. There, he pioneered the “rayograph,” or photogram—a cameraless photographic technique that used light and shadow to create ethereal abstract compositions—and produced some of the most iconic images in art history, including Le Violon d’Ingres (1924) and Noire et Blanche (1926). His photography, distinguished by its fusion of elegance, surrealism, and psychological depth, captured the essence of modernist Paris and immortalized creative icons such as Kiki de Montparnasse, Gertrude Stein, and James Joyce. At the same time, Man Ray’s experimental films, including Le Retour a la Raison (1923) and L’Etoile de mer (1928), and his sculptural works like The Gift (1921) and Object to Be Destroyed (1923), expanded the possibilities of art itself, transforming ordinary objects into symbols of mystery and desire. His conceptual approach—viewing art as an idea rather than an object—anticipated later movements such as Pop Art, Minimalism, and Conceptual Art, profoundly influencing artists like Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, and Joseph Beuys, as well as photographers Helmut Newton, Guy Bourdin, Cindy Sherman, and Richard Avedon. Even in exile during World War II, while working in Los Angeles, he continued to innovate, blending Surrealist fantasy with the luminosity of the California landscape before returning to Paris, where he spent his final decades refining his poetic, intellectual, and sensuous vision. Exhibited in major institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Tate Modern, and the Centre Pompidou, Man Ray’s work remains foundational to modern art history—bridging painting, photography, film, and sculpture in a body of work that continues to shape the language of visual culture. Standing alongside Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, and Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray endures as one of the most original and influential artists of the modern era. His highest auction record was achieved by Noire et Blanche (1926), which sold for 3.13 million USD at Christie’s, Paris, on November 9, 2017, confirming his status as a timeless innovator whose genius continues to inspire artists, collectors, and dreamers worldwide. Rooted in Solitude- Vivid, colorful, Expressive Abstract, Zen Calligraphy

Located in Rockville, MD

Cymn Wong’s style of mixed media paintings are developed alongside with pastel, crayon, acrylic and ink. Rooted from traditional Chinese ink-brush painting to contemporary New York Abstract Expressionism, Wong wields various free and fluent but forceful strokes and creative washing on canvas atop the heritage of her personal Zen calligraphy; in some cases, Cymn has collaged with traditional Chinese papier-mâché. Through the layering of multiple marks, colors and textures, or being used by perspective, she is able to balance her own spontaneity and control to accomplish the desired effect. When Wong applies to blend her canvas with splash-ink, free dyeing and deliberate sealing, her aim is to create a vivid and immersive sense of expanded spectrum that integrates the outsider viewers with the painting landscape. These stylistic elements combine to create an organic entity that is dynamic, engaging, and deeply contemplative. In exploring the blending entity of art and poetry as extrinsic “landscape” and intrinsic “soundscape”, the brushstrokes are hereby given fresh impetus by a single-unity involvement. Every brushstroke reflects an outer and inner state of creativity. Meanwhile, this embodied experience opens up a transformation and imagination of mindset. Wong declares, “By embracing plainness, simplicity and intimacy, my art emerges an insight for cultivating a cross-boundary ecological ethos. In most recent development of my paintings, I have been focusing on several key areas that are driving for a creative exploration. Firstly, I am placing a greater focus on the bean sprout as a central element of her work. The bean sprout is a crystalized symbol. Its unique shape evokes the numbers "0" and "1". The "0" of the bean sprout represents nothingness or emptiness, a void spectrum that is co-birthed with “1”. The "1", on the other hand, represents possibilities and growth. By incorporating the shape of the bean sprout into visual language, I link the binary concepts of "0" and "1" to convey a sense of stillness, calm, and openness in the other area of "0". Meanwhile a motion, another state of change comes birth in the open area of "1", building in a dynamic interplay between these two facets for growth and inherent continuously in every subsequent moment. Secondly, I attempt to create an alternative way of revealing the insightful wisdom of Zen philosophy, in a fusion of fluidity and freedom of abstract expressionism, siding along with the contemplative practice of Zen calligraphy. This integration of meditative peace and passionate energy presents a fresh landscape that is holistically dynamic and contemplative, evocative and reflective. The Zen strokes that feature prominently refer to the hope of splashing an endless creativity at any stage of life. Thirdly, in organizing a larger-scale of art forms, I gradually move to create a sense of unity and wholeness that highlights a stimulating dimension of cultural diversity in my painting canvas. Moreover, I strive to develop a stronger sense of spatiality by leaving white space blank within the compositions, which provides a stimulated sense of circulation and contingency, for an experimental interaction of fulfilling the gaps of different 3-D dimensions in life. Last but not the least I embrace my intuition of self-awareness under my personal practice of integrating multiple refreshing technical elements, that always plunging into the fundamental questions of man’s existence and the nature of living being. I appeal to the worldly communities for a spirit of connection and resonance that may well go beyond the surface of my painting art.” From 2022 to 2023, Cymn has extended a soul karma in her Washington saloon that spearheads to create a masterfully-suited-style of global ethos. The ethos showcases her accomplished selfhood of aesthetic views blending with both Eastern and Western cultures and languages. Wong attempts to vitalize the diversity of built-in imageries and present the visual art communities via a dynamic interaction of natural human passion with the uncontrollable social environment and the universe. In fact, Cynm’s lifelong commitments to bilingual poetry and expanded visual art have been widely applauded in multiple international platforms whereas her English...

PHILIPPE NOYER "AU BAR" WATERCOLOR, SIGNED FRANCE, C.1960S 25.5 X 19.5 INCHES Philippe Henri Noyer 1917-1985 Philippe Henri Noyer was born on June 28, 1917 in Lyons, France.
