Sorry for the reflections on the glass, but I didn't want to take this lovely frame apart. The close-ups are much better. This is a highly accomplished, superbly detailed watercolor of a the facade of a building in Rome, depicting Corinthian columns, a frieze and a free-standing tributary sculpture above. Image area itself is 10.5" x 6.25", framed size is 19.5" x 14". Matted and presented in a pretty antique wood frame that has some flaws from an apparently long history but is perfectly serviceable, as you can see. Valerie Thornton (1931 - 1991) Ponte Vecchio, Florence (1972) Etching and aquatint 33 x 20 cm Numbered 1/60 lower left, titled below, and signed and dated lower right, all in pencil. Here, Thornton muses on the dramatic differences in tone and texture between the water of the River Arno, the smooth paleness of the Ponte Vecchio, and the dark terracotta of the city's roofs. Her work is deeply concerned with material, and many of her etchings focus on eroded stone, emotive landscapes, and weathered architecture. Valerie Thornton was a British etcher and printmaker. She was born in London, but was evacuated to Canada with her two brothers during World War II. She returned to London in 1944 and studied at the Byam Shaw School of Art in 1949. From 1950 to 1953 Thornton studied under P.F. Millard at the Regent Street Polytechnic, then spent eight months at Atelier 17 in Paris. In the early 1960s, she moved to New York and worked at Pratt Graphic Art Center. In 1955, she succeeded Howard Hodgkin as assistant art teacher at Charterhouse School and in 1965 she became a founding member of the Print Makers Council. In 1970 she became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painters-Etchers and Engravers. Thornton was a member of The Regent Street Group (a group of nine artists who studied together at the Regent Street Polytechnic in the early 1950s). Artist Commentary: This painting of a Cape Cod house is made of 468 little paper squares that I pasted on the canvas. The window, flowers, and bushes were then added with oil paint. My friends and family say that gluing together hundreds of little squares together is slightly obsessional, but I think it actually demonstrates great patience! I love to lose myself into creating and pasting these repeating patterns. Then, I disrupt them with a disconnected and more loose painting on top. But as a whole, both parts are in fact united and harmonious, as they belong to the same Cape Cod house. This is how I feel about myself: one person with two very different cultures. From the outside, they can look quite disconnected, but they actually are not. In fact, I find that I unite both cultures by painting them. What about you? Do you feel like you are made of disconnecting parts? And what do you do to unite them? Original Holiday Greeting Card Illustration featuring a snowy scene filled with horse-drawn sleighs at Christmastime Medium: Egg Tempera on Gesso Board Charlotte Joan Sternberg was born in Meriden, Connecticut in 1920. Early on, she became interested in art, and her parents encouraged her efforts. She attended public schools in the area, as well as taking art classes at the technical school. Afterwards, she attended the Yale School of Art. Her fellow classmates included Rudolph Zallinger, who executed the dinosaur mural at the Peabody Museum in New Haven; Jean Day Zallinger, renowned book illustrator; and Edward Paier, founder of the Paier College of Art. It was there that she became interested in egg tempera, and most of her well-known artwork was done in this medium. She was one of a number of Yale artists who revived this medium.(She did not work professionally in oils, although she sometimes used gouache or watercolor.) She went on to a long career in commercial illustration. She worked extensively for J.Walter Thompson, doing advertising art for such companies as Esso (later Exxon), Textron, and Lederle pharmaceuticals. While she did a variety of subjects, she was best known for her Americana themes, particularly snow scenes of historic New England. Many of these pieces were published as Christmas cards for American Artists Group. She also taught for many years at the Paier College of Art. She also did a number of limited edition prints for Greenwich Workshop. Her art is used on such items as tapestry pillows, puzzles, and decorative flags.
