Raymond Pettibon Black Flag: Rare 1984 Raymond Pettibon illustrated Black Flag promotional flyer published to advertise the release of the Black Flag album 'Slip It In'. Offset printed; 8.5 x 11 inches. 1984. Fair overall vintage condition. Fold-lines; signs of handling; tape marks reverse; some minor handwriting. Unsigned from an edition of unknown. Flea, the Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist once said of Pettibon's Black Flag illustrations and iconic logo: "Before I knew what Black Flag was I remember walking around Hollywood and seeing Raymond's flyers and being like, 'What the fuck is that?'… Those flyers made me feel like something is going on and it's romantic and it's mysterious and it's heavy and I don't know what it is but I wanna know." About Raymond Pettibon (Americanb. 1957) Raymond Pettibon is a contemporary American artist known for his stylized ink drawings combining images and text. His inventive narratives blend historical content with consumer culture to yield incisive critiques of contemporary society. “I was making my work as transparent as possible, without equivocations, without calling attention to itself, without apology,” he explained. “There's a lot of conventions in the art world that are not to be transgressed, but my economy of means doesn't abide by those strictures.” Born Raymond Ginn on June 16, 1957 in Tucson, AZ, the artist is self-taught, but cites drawings by William Blake, Edward Hopper, Francisco Goya, and John Sloan as instructive to his practice. Deriving inspiration from comics, cartoons, and other pop culture iconography, Pettibon began designing album covers and ephemera for his brother’s band Black Flag in the mid-1970s. Carl Payne is a hugely talented sculptor, focusing predominantly on the female form he often uses his wife, a professional dancer, as his muse. Continuing a successful career in England and Ireland, Carl joined Callaghan Fine Paintings and Works of Art at the beginning of 2004 in order to dedicate his time to create and develop stunning individual contemporary sculpture. He started at Marlborough gallery London in the 60s, then in partnership with Brooke Alexander. In its stable were a host of esteemed artists: Willie Cole, Rita McBride, John Ahearn, Paul Thek, Doris Salcedo, Eugenio Dittborn, Dalton Paula, and Rigoberto Torres, Mona Hatoum and Emily Jacir.) Mario Pérez was born in San Juan, Argentina in 1960. The second of seven children, and the son of a housepainter. His art often features tiny figures in immense landscapes, and unique backgrounds. It has elements of Conceptual art. His work has been regularly featured in leading auction houses like Christie’s and Sotheby’s in New York, and private and public collections. The magic realism of Mario Segundo Pérez is characteristic of a chiefly Latin-American concept in painting, literature and film that incorporates fantastic or mythical elements into an otherwise realistic scenario. Coined in the 1940s by Cuban novelist Alejo Carpentier, the term often is used when referring to the Colombian novelist Gabriel Garcia Márquez, winner of the 1982 Nobel Prize in Literature. Influences include Frida Kahlo and George Tooker. He was in shows with Ana Fabry and Eduardo Esquivel. Paintings by Pérez are included in numerous private and public collections, including the Ciudad Casa de Gobierno (the Buenos Aires City Hall); the University of Miami School of Architecture, and the College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts (CARTA) at Florida International University.
