American Contemporary Painting Seurat Pointillist Richard Huntington Mexico

By Richard Huntington

Located in Buffalo, NY

An original acrylic on paper by American artist Richard Huntington entitled "Scientific Analysis of Seurat's 'Woman Powdering Herself", 2020. This new work is part of the current gallery exhibition, A Sense of Place which runs through the end of June. This special exhibition is a celebration of the work of 4 extraordinary artists who used to call Western New York home. Travel lust, adventure, and livelihood have taken each of these artists to distant places, including China, Mexico, Massachusetts, and New York City, but they will always be a treasured part of Buffalo's dynamic arts community. Acknowledging that a sense of place can be an element in any work of art, shaping or transforming it depending on intentions and explorations, Resource:Art is thrilled to present this selection of new work by each of these unique artists. Richard Huntington is a writer, printmaker, and painter who lives in Buffalo, N.Y. and San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico. Born in Albany, N.Y., Huntington received a BFA from Syracuse University in 1959 and an MFA in 1963 from the University at Buffalo, where he studied under Seymour Drumlevitch. He taught studio and art history courses at Bradley University in Peoria, Ill.; lived and worked in New York City, where he showed at the Fulton Street Gallery and other venues; was an art critic for the Buffalo Courier...

By Walter Schnackenberg

Located in Palm Beach, FL

Walter Schnackenberg’s style changed several times during his long and successful career. Having studied in Munich, the artist traveled often to Paris where he fell under the spell of the Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s colorful and sensuous posters depicting theatrical and decadent subjects. Schnackenberg became a regular contributor of similar compositions to the German magazines Jugend and Simplicissimus before devoting himself to the design of stage scenery and costumes. In the artist’s theatrical work, his mastery of form, ornamentation, and Orientalism became increasingly evident. He excelled at combining fluid Art Nouveau outlines, with spiky Expressionist passages, and the postures and patterns of the mysterious East. In his later years, Schnackenberg explored the unconscious, using surreal subject matter and paler colors that plainly portrayed dreams and visions, some imbued with political connotations. His drawings, illustrations, folio prints, and posters are highly sought today for their exceedingly imaginative qualities, enchanting subject matter, and arresting use of color. By Fernando Natalici

Located in NEW YORK, NY

Area Nightclub Archive 1983-1987: A collection of 40+ items (including approx 30 club invitations) spanning the history of the seminal 1980s New York nightclub known as "Area". Area opened its doors in September 1983 and virtually overnight became the nexus of one of the most vibrant Downtown art and club scenes in New York. Every six weeks, they transformed the enormous space at 157 Hudson with a different art exhibit & performance theme. Area was the place where A-listers such as Andy Warhol, Francesco Clemente, Julian Schnabel, Madonna, JFK Jr. & many others went to see and be seen: A place where Basquiat DJ'd, while Keith Haring and Andy Warhol produced several installations. Area's wildly creative invitations became the hottest tickets in town and instantly collectible art in and of themselves. Further details: Comprised of 40+ items in total: approx 30 club invitations; 3 original darkroom photographs taken by & signed by Fernando Natalici - the art designer of each piece; 6 drink tickets; 2 original mailing envelopes; a Halloween handkerchief invite; plus an original advertisement proof for the 80s fashion publication Details Magazine (image 4). Invitation dimensions ranging from: 9.5 inches on the longest side to 3.5 inches on the shortest side + 1 invite folding out to 11x17 inches (image 8). 3 signed silver gelatin photographs measuring: 8x10 inches (2 works) & 5x7 inches (1 work); Ad proof (image 4): 11x15 inches. Most pieces generally in good overall vintage condition; with a couple or more invites in fair condition. Provenance: Obtained directly from the club's original graphic designer, Fernando Natalici. Rare and not to be passed upon. Literature/References: Area: 1983-1987 by Eric Goode Jennifer Goode (pub. by Abrams 2013). New York Magazine 2013: "It Was the Hottest Club in Town." New York Times November 2013: "Waking Area Nightclub From the Dead". Exhibitions: 'Area: The Exhibition': The Hole Gallery NYC November 2013. Area: Further History (New York Magazine 11/1/13): "Influenced equally by sixties-era happenings and the gonzo childhoods of its proprietors, Area opened its doors in 1983. The club, unlike any that came before it, underwent a painstaking transformation roughly every six weeks, with themes like Confinement, Suburbia, and Science Fiction that incorporated elaborate art installations with taxidermied bears...

Raymond Pettibon Black Flag 1984 (Raymond Pettibon punk flyer)

By Raymond Pettibon

Located in NEW YORK, NY

Raymond Pettibon Black Flag: Rare 1984 Raymond Pettibon illustrated Black Flag promotional flyer published to advertise the release of the Black Flag album 'Slip It In'. Offset printed; 8.5 x 11 inches. 1984. Fair overall vintage condition. Fold-lines; signs of handling; tape marks reverse; some minor handwriting. Unsigned from an edition of unknown. Flea, the Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist once said of Pettibon's Black Flag illustrations and iconic logo: "Before I knew what Black Flag was I remember walking around Hollywood and seeing Raymond's flyers and being like, 'What the fuck is that?'… Those flyers made me feel like something is going on and it's romantic and it's mysterious and it's heavy and I don't know what it is but I wanna know." About Raymond Pettibon (Americanb. 1957) Raymond Pettibon is a contemporary American artist known for his stylized ink drawings combining images and text. His inventive narratives blend historical content with consumer culture to yield incisive critiques of contemporary society. “I was making my work as transparent as possible, without equivocations, without calling attention to itself, without apology,” he explained. “There's a lot of conventions in the art world that are not to be transgressed, but my economy of means doesn't abide by those strictures.” Born Raymond Ginn on June 16, 1957 in Tucson, AZ, the artist is self-taught, but cites drawings by William Blake, Edward Hopper, Francisco Goya, and John Sloan as instructive to his practice. Deriving inspiration from comics, cartoons, and other pop culture iconography, Pettibon began designing album covers and ephemera for his brother’s band Black Flag in the mid-1970s. He went on to produce cover art for Sonic Youth, the Minutemen...

Prang's Easter by Louis Rhead, Art Nouveau lithograph, 1897

By Louis Rhead

Located in Chicago, IL

“America was quick to reveal strong Art Nouveau voices; it was Louis Comfort Tiffany who encouraged Bing to open his salon, and artists Will Bradley and Ethel Reed exhibited a Japonist simplicity that presented a strong, refined take on the Art Nouveau ideal. Louis Rhead was born in England but emigrated to the United States in 1883 at the age of 24, and quickly found himself celebrated both in the United States and in France, exhibiting his designs in the prestigious Salon des Cent in Paris in 1897.” -Quoted from Flowering Lines: Rare Art Nouveau Graphics 1883-1911 by Thomas Negovan (2017) Lithograph of Louis Rhead’s Prang’s Easter Publications, published in 1897 by Imprimerie Chaix, the printing house known for publishing the works of Belle Epoque master Jules Chéret. This example was printed with a plate of shimmering gold ink. This piece is presented professionally framed using all archival materials, including a hand-wrapped silk mat and gold fillet. Lady in a Garden

By François Gall

Located in Houston, TX

Francois Gall ( 1912-1987) François Gall was a Hungarian-born French painter best known for his Impressionistic style. Primarily focused on the figure, his brushy oil paintings are largely inspired by the Impressionist masters, Edgar Degas in particular. Gall often painted women engrossed in traditionally feminine activities—ballet, fixing their hair, sewing—rendered in loose, expressive marks and bright pastel colors. In addition to his figurative work, the artist also captured the French landscape, most notably the beach. In A Day at the Beach (c. 1948), loosely sketches bathers frolic under striped umbrellas in a picturesque rendering of French summer vacation. Born in 1912 in Transylvania, Romania, Gall received his formal training at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Workshop Coromaldi in Rome, Italy. He would later settle in Paris in 1936, where he befriended prominent artists of the day—including Pablo Picasso—and became a naturalized French citizen in 1942. As his work grew in esteem, Gall was granted the Francis Smith...
