Finding the Right Seating for You

With entire areas of our homes reserved for “sitting rooms,” the value of quality antique and vintage seating cannot be overstated.

Fortunately, the design of side chairs, armchairs and other lounge furniture — since what were, quite literally, the early perches of our ancestors — has evolved considerably.

Among the earliest standard seating furniture were stools. Egyptian stools, for example, designed for one person with no seat back, were x-shaped and typically folded to be tucked away. These rudimentary chairs informed the design of Greek and Roman stools, all of which were a long way from Sori Yanagi's Butterfly stool or Alvar Aalto's Stool 60. In the 18th century and earlier, seats with backs and armrests were largely reserved for high nobility.

The seating of today is more inclusive but the style and placement of chairs can still make a statement. Antique desk chairs and armchairs designed in the style of Louis XV, which eventually included painted furniture and were often made of rare woods, feature prominently curved legs as well as Chinese themes and varied ornaments. Much like the thrones of fairy tales and the regency, elegant lounges crafted in the Louis XV style convey wealth and prestige. In the kitchen, the dining chair placed at the head of the table is typically reserved for the head of the household or a revered guest.

Of course, with luxurious vintage or antique furnishings, every chair can seem like the best seat in the house. Whether your preference is stretching out on a plush sofa, such as the Serpentine, designed by Vladimir Kagan, or cozying up in a vintage wingback chair, there is likely to be a comfy classic or contemporary gem for you on 1stDibs.

With respect to the latest obsessions in design, cane seating has been cropping up everywhere, from sleek armchairs to lounge chairs, while bouclé fabric, a staple of modern furniture design, can be seen in mid-century modern, Scandinavian modern and Hollywood Regency furniture styles.

Admirers of the sophisticated craftsmanship and dark woods frequently associated with mid-century modern seating can find timeless furnishings in our expansive collection of lounge chairs, dining chairs and other items — whether they’re vintage editions or alluring official reproductions of iconic designs from the likes of Hans Wegner or from Charles and Ray Eames. Shop our inventory of Egg chairs, designed in 1958 by Arne Jacobsen, the Florence Knoll lounge chair and more.

No matter your style, the collection of unique chairs, sofas and other seating on 1stDibs is surely worthy of a standing ovation.

Questions About Down Cushion Chair
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 3, 2023
Which office chair has the best cushion is largely a matter of personal preference. Some people prefer chairs with thicker cushions or like one type of filling material more than another. On 1stDibs, find a collection of office chairs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 14, 2023
A cushion stud is a stud earring that features a cushion-cut gemstone, often a diamond. The cut gives a gemstone a square shape with softly rounded corners. As a brilliant cut, it brings out the sparkle of gemstones, and it has a rich history dating back to the 18th century. Find a diverse assortment of gemstone stud earrings on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
A cushion cut diamond is a style of cut where the diamond is square with rounded edges. It was formerly known as an “old mine cut.” On 1stDibs, you’ll find a collection of expertly-vetted cushion cut diamonds from some of the world’s top sellers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 12, 2021
A cushion-cut diamond is a diamond with soft rounded edges — it draws on an old diamond shape and it combines a square cut with rounded corners. Cushion-cut diamonds, with their larger facets, are just as dazzling as their round-cut counterparts. Find a range of antique and vintage cushion-cut diamond jewelry on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
A cushion cover is a fabric cover with a decorative design which protects a cushion and serves as a style element. There are many cushion covers for sale on 1stDibs.
Cotton and linen are widely used in cushion manufacture and both are hard wearing and washable. Canvas - when looking at a good fabric to use on outdoor furniture the perfect choice is canvas, which is an extremely strong cotton fabric.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 5, 2021
A cushion-brilliant cut diamond contains larger facets and does not have a crushed ice look unlike cushion-modified brilliant. Cushion-modified brilliant is a variation of cushion brilliant shape which has an appearance of a well-cut radiant shape diamond. Find a wide variety of cushion-brilliant and cushion-modified brilliant diamondjewelry on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertSeptember 25, 2019

First clean and dry the cushions, and then store them off the ground in a cool, dry indoor area.

  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 19, 2021
A cushion halo setting is a ring style that sees a large center stone surrounded by a frame of small accent diamonds in a pillow shape. The center stone could be round (only the halo is pillow- or cushion-shaped). Find a range of antique, new and vintage rings on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022
A cushion cut diamond is one that has a square shape with rounded corners. It differs from the similarly shaped emerald cut in that it has a brilliant cut that maximizes sparkle rather than a stepped cut that shows off color and clarity. You'll find a variety of cushion cut diamond jewelry on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 2, 2021
The cushion cut is often referred to as a pillow cut due to its square or rectangular shape with rounded edges. This stone cut comprises 58 facets, like brilliant stones. The cushion cut has been popular since the 18th century. Shop a collection of vintage and modern engagement rings set with cushion-cut diamonds from some of the world’s top jewelers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
The difference between cushion cut and halo jewelry is its design. Cushion cut refers to a central stone with a square shape and rounded corners. Halo means a circle of smaller gemstones surrounding a larger center stone, which could have a cushion cut or another type of cut. Find a wide variety of gemstone jewelry on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
The best filling for sofa seat cushions is really a matter of preference. Filling options include polyester, foam, and feather. While foam is the most popular sofa seat cushion filling, feathers are preferred by those who prioritize softness.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2023
The best cushion for sitting on over a period of many hours is largely a matter of personal preference. Thickness, style and the type of filling all affect how much support a cushion provides. For work-from-home situations, you’ll want to consider comfort and ergonomic support. Herman Miller’s Aeron is a best seller for sitting in front of the computer all day. What makes it stand out among its many imitators is its high quality and fully customizable seat height and depth, arms and recline. Find a range of comfortable seating on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 5, 2021
The best setting for a cushion-cut diamond depends on personal preference. The cushion cut is often referred to as a pillow cut due to its square or rectangular shape with rounded edges. This stone cut comprises 58 facets, like brilliant stones. The cushion cut has been popular since the 18th century. Browse a collection of cushion-cut diamond jewelry on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
Yes, cushion cut diamonds look larger than round cut diamonds. Cushion cut diamonds have a larger table per carat than round diamonds, making them appear larger. This coupled with cushion cut diamonds' larger facets, tend to make these types of diamonds appear larger to our eyes.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 8, 2023
The difference between a lounge chair and a chair is specificity. A chair is the general term for furniture typically designed to seat one person at a time, and there are many different kinds of chairs, including dining, accent and office chairs. Lounge chairs are another example of a specific type of chair. They are chairs with a footrest that allows you to elevate your feet while sitting. On 1stDibs, explore a large collection of chairs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertJune 15, 2023
To tell if a chair is an Eames chair, take a look under the seat or cushion. Authentic Eames lounge chairs are manufactured by Herman Miller and Vitra. If your Eames chair is a Herman Miller original, look for the legendary manufacturer’s specific logomarks on the product (these logomarks can be found on the company’s official website). There is also the manufacturing label, which is usually found under the seat or cushion (unless a former owner removed it). All of the classic Herman Miller designs are paired with a certificate of authenticity. Some designs may also have a medallion attached to certify their authenticity. You can then check trusted online resources to determine if the information on the label is correct for the style of chair (and more info on its construction is available on the official Eames website). You won’t see screws outside of the wood shells on an authentic Eames lounge chair, and prior to the 1970s, original vintage Eames lounge chairs were made with no more than five layers of plywood (during the 1970s, the chairs were made with seven layers). Find a variety of authentic Eames chairs on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMay 5, 2023
The difference between a lounge chair and an accent chair pertains to purpose. Typically, a lounge chair is wider and deeper than an accent chair and tends to have a thicker cushion. These stylistic differences owe to the fact that lounge chairs are meant to provide luxurious, comfortable seating for long periods of time, while accent chairs are more often intended to add visual appeal to a living room. On 1stDibs, shop a collection of living room chairs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertAugust 26, 2024
The difference between a computer chair and an office chair is generally the number of features they have. Computer chairs tend to be more basic pieces with adjustable seats. Office chairs may have more padding, multiple points of adjustment and decorative details, such as nailhead trim. Keep in mind that some people do use the terms office chair and computer chair interchangeably. Shop an assortment of office chairs and computer chairs on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertAugust 26, 2024
The difference between a Morris chair and a Stickley chair comes down to origins and characteristics. A Morris chair gets its name from William Morris, one of the founders of the British company Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. During the late 1860s, the company began producing the Morris chair, which has a reclining seat back and an intricately carved wood frame. This design spread to the U.S., where it was seen by Gustav Stickley. Drawing inspiration from it, Stickley produced the Stickley chair in 1904. Like the Morris chair, the piece has a reclining back but a simpler slatted frame that aligns with the American Arts and Crafts design style. Due to its origins, some people call the Stickley chair the Stickley Morris chair or the Mission Morris chair. Explore a collection of Stickley chairs and Morris chairs on 1stDibs.
