Large Rare Blue and White with 'Rockwork and Flowers' Dish, Early Qing dynasty
Large Rare Blue and White with 'Rockwork and Flowers' Dish, Early Qing dynasty

Large Rare Blue and White with 'Rockwork and Flowers' Dish, Early Qing dynasty

Located in seoul, KR

This dish features a rockwork design that was popular during the Mid to Late Ming dynasties. The blue-and-white underglaze effectively captures the vibrant tones typical of the late Ming and early Qing periods. The detailed depiction of flowers, leaves, and rockwork is both rich and vivid. Due to its excavation from the seabed, the glaze in the central area shows signs of wear, particularly compared to the more preserved sides of the dish. Although it was soaked in hot water to remove the salt at the time of acquisition, slight salt residue remains on the surface. Period : Qing Dynasty(Presumably Kangxi or Yongzheng Period) Type : Dish Medium : Blue and White glaze Condition : Excellent(slight salt residue remains on the surface, and the glaze is worn primarily around the edges.) Provenance: Southeast Asia, South China Sea from Shipwreck in early 2000s Reference : 1) Christies Newyork 22 MAR 2018 - The Studio of the Clear Garden: Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art - Lot 604 (Price realised : USD 732,500 / Type : related - Ming style) 2) Sotheby's London 4 November 2020 - Imperial Porcelain – A Private Collection - Lot 19 (Price realised : GBP 75,600 / Type : related - Yuan style) 3) Asian Art Museum, San Francisco - Object number B60P88 (Type : related - Ming style) 4) Art Institute Chicago - Reference Number 1997.390 - Large Foliate Dish with Garden Rock and Plants (Type : Closely related) * Yuan-Ming Style from Qing Dynasty During the Qing dynasty, many ceramics were produced that imitated the styles of the Ming and Yuan dynasties. This practice was not mere imitation but a creative endeavor to inherit and innovate upon past techniques and styles. Qing dynasty ceramicists mastered the exceptional techniques of Ming and Yuan ceramics and used them as a foundation to develop more advanced works. Particularly, Yuan dynasty blue and white porcelain...

Pair of Vintage Thai Bencharong Lidded Jars, 20th century.

Pair of Vintage Thai Bencharong Lidded Jars, 20th century.

Located in Point Richmond, CA

Pair of Vintage Thai Bencharong Lidded Jars, 20th century. Bencharong enamel decoration with Buddhist imagery on a black background. This porcelain jar and lid form having a raised foot rim and lotus bud on a disk lid finial are richly decorated in bright polychrome enamels in the style of the royal household ceramics favored by the nobility in eighteenth century Siam. This colorful style became known as “bencharong”, a term that derives from two Sanskrit words – panch (‘five’) and rong (‘colour’) and which relates to the number of colors used to decorate such porcelain. These jars and covers are decorated with typical Thai motifs. The sides are decorated with four Thepanom (Buddhist celestial beings) each wearing a broad necklace of petals and seated on a lotus within triangular cartouches that have a coral-red ground. Four Norasingh (mythical forest-dwelling semi-deity with a human head, torso, and arms but with the hind-quarters of a lion and the tail and hoofs of a deer) against black back grounds filled with flaming purple kranok motifs. This design is framed by two floral bands top and bottom. The interior is a covered in a transparent glaze with unglazed lid edge and the gallery interior edge of the lid unglazed. Condition: Excellent Each measuring: 5 in. in diameter x 6 in. high (12.7 x 15.2cm) Each weighing: 1 lb. 5.5 oz. (610g.) 20th century. Provenance: Dr. Philip Gould, New York, NY. Vietnamese Celadon Lotus Vessel, Ly or Tran Dynasty, 13th/14th Century, Vietnam

An unusually large Vietnamese celadon glazed stoneware bowl with carved lotus petal design, Ly or Tran Dynasty, 13th - 14th century, Vietnam. The large bowl or offering vessel of generous proportions, rising on a short, unglazed foot ring, revealing the reddish buff stoneware body. The globular body elegantly tapered. The lower section deeply carved with a traditional stylized lotus petal design, a band of incised lines above. The upper section of the vessel ribbed, and carved with long, elegant lotus petals that taper upwards, terminating in rounded ends. Another band of incised lines circumscribe the mouth. The vessel glazed in a wonderful olive celadon glaze. The glaze stopping neatly at the mouth rim. The transparent celadon glaze thinning slightly along the raised sections, and pooling in the recesses, adding additional depth and texture. The celadon with wonderful yellow undertones, giving an overall olive hue.
