Shipwreck Jar from the Kingdom of Sukhothai, Thailand, 17th Century
About the Item
A wonderful example of a 17th Century Sawankhalok ceramic jar from the Kingdom of Sukhothai, Thailand. It features a wonderfully subtle turquoise undertone as well as natural marine growth which has formed on its exterior from sever centuries under the sea. This item was sourced from a shipwreck off the Coast of the Indonesian Island of Batam. Batam was one of the most substantial and influential ports in the South China Sea where an abundance of trade was conducted. The jar originates from the Kingdom of Sukhothai, modern day Thailand. It is an iron glazed stoneware jar and features loops that wrap around the Jar’s shoulder. These loops were used to secure the lid to the jar and prevent the contents from leaking.
