17th Century Blue and White Sleeve Vase from Hatcher Collection

About the Item

Transitional Period blue and white porcelain sleeve vase from the Hatcher Collection. This elegant vase was part of a hoard recovered by Captain Michael Hatcher from the wreck of a ship that sunk in the South China Sea in 1643. Approximately 25,000 pieces from that shipment were sold at auction at Christies Amsterdam in 1984. The Transitional period, which took place between the Ming and Qing dynasties, and which ran from the beginning of the 17th century until approximately 1660, marked a shift in Chinese ceramic styles as the pieces became more original, poetic, and more freely drawn than those made in the official kilns. The vase's simple, pure shape sets off a decor of flowering branches, around which flutter some cute flying insects. Due to its 300 year immersion in salt water, the blues in the decoration are muted, and the finish is matte. The vase is in excellent condition, without visible chips or cracks. Provenance: The Hatcher Collection, Christies Amsterdam, 1984.
