About the Item

A fine Chinese shipwreck blue and white decorated large porcelain kendi, or pouring vessel, Transitional Period, late Ming or early Qing Dynasty, mid to late 17th century, China, for the Southeast Asian market. Decorated with a robust design of large peony blossoms and scrolling foliage, this large kendi is heavily potted, with a substantial globular body supporting a tall, thin neck with a 'garlic head' mouth, with a truncated mammary spout to one shoulder. The glaze somewhat degraded, with a matte finish, indicating this piece was part of a shipwreck, and spent time under the sea exposed to salt water. With a collection number to the underside. The kendi, or pouring vessel, though ubiquitous in Southeast Asia, is one of the more unusual vessel forms. While they are made in various materials, and come in various sizes, the basic components are the same, including a globular body, narrow neck with an everted or flanged mouth, and a "mammary" spout, so named due to its resemblance to the female breast. Kendi are used in both daily and ritual life as both pouring and drinking vessels.
