Finding the Right Seating for You

With entire areas of our homes reserved for “sitting rooms,” the value of quality antique and vintage seating cannot be overstated.

Fortunately, the design of side chairs, armchairs and other lounge furniture — since what were, quite literally, the early perches of our ancestors — has evolved considerably.

Among the earliest standard seating furniture were stools. Egyptian stools, for example, designed for one person with no seat back, were x-shaped and typically folded to be tucked away. These rudimentary chairs informed the design of Greek and Roman stools, all of which were a long way from Sori Yanagi's Butterfly stool or Alvar Aalto's Stool 60. In the 18th century and earlier, seats with backs and armrests were largely reserved for high nobility.

The seating of today is more inclusive but the style and placement of chairs can still make a statement. Antique desk chairs and armchairs designed in the style of Louis XV, which eventually included painted furniture and were often made of rare woods, feature prominently curved legs as well as Chinese themes and varied ornaments. Much like the thrones of fairy tales and the regency, elegant lounges crafted in the Louis XV style convey wealth and prestige. In the kitchen, the dining chair placed at the head of the table is typically reserved for the head of the household or a revered guest.

Of course, with luxurious vintage or antique furnishings, every chair can seem like the best seat in the house. Whether your preference is stretching out on a plush sofa, such as the Serpentine, designed by Vladimir Kagan, or cozying up in a vintage wingback chair, there is likely to be a comfy classic or contemporary gem for you on 1stDibs.

With respect to the latest obsessions in design, cane seating has been cropping up everywhere, from sleek armchairs to lounge chairs, while bouclé fabric, a staple of modern furniture design, can be seen in mid-century modern, Scandinavian modern and Hollywood Regency furniture styles.

Admirers of the sophisticated craftsmanship and dark woods frequently associated with mid-century modern seating can find timeless furnishings in our expansive collection of lounge chairs, dining chairs and other items — whether they’re vintage editions or alluring official reproductions of iconic designs from the likes of Hans Wegner or from Charles and Ray Eames. Shop our inventory of Egg chairs, designed in 1958 by Arne Jacobsen, the Florence Knoll lounge chair and more.

No matter your style, the collection of unique chairs, sofas and other seating on 1stDibs is surely worthy of a standing ovation.

The Big 4 Watchmakers are Rolex, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet and Vacheron Constantin. These four watchmakers have long histories of excellence in the industry and account for a large percentage of luxury watch sales. Rolex's two most iconic models are sports watches: the Submariner and the Daytona. Patek Philippe has introduced many well-known models, including the Calatrava, an elegantly minimal dress watch introduced in 1932 and named for the Calatrava Cross, and the Nautilus, the brand’s first sports watch, conceived by legendary designer Gérald Genta in 1976. Audemars Piguet's most famous model is arguably the Royal Oak, the world's first-ever luxury stainless steel watch when it debuted at the Baselworld Watch and Jewelry Fair in 1972. Widely loved models designed by Vacheron Constantin, the world's oldest watchmaker still in operation, include the sporty Overseas and the Patrimony. On 1stDibs, shop a large collection of Rolex, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet and Vacheron Constantin watches.

Categorized by crafting techniques, the four basic types of sculpture are molded, cast, carved and assembled. Sculptors produce molded sculptures by shaping materials and carved sculptures by cutting away at them. Cast sculptures start with a mold later filled with liquid metal or plaster. The 4Cs of engagement rings are cut, color, clarity and carat weight, but this doesnt pertain solely to engagement rings. Established by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the 4Cs are the guidelines that determine how diamonds are graded. A diamonds cut pertains to how the stones facets interact with the light. There are five main categories of color (judged on the tone and saturation): colorless, near colorless, faint, very light and light. According to the GIA, clarity is the relative absence of inclusions and blemishes in a diamond (inclusions are internal features and blemishes refers to surface irregularities). Also per the GIA, Diamonds are weighed to a thousandth (0.001) of a carat and then rounded to the nearest hundredth, or point. Over a carat, diamond weights are usually expressed in carats and decimals. Keep in mind that because a three-carat gem can be less valuable then a one-carat stone, weight is not the most important signifier of a stones value. Explore a large collection of engagement rings on 1stDibs.

The exact number of Jordan 4 X KAWS that were made is unknown. However, the collaboration sneaker was a limited edition, so it is safe to assume that fewer pairs were produced than what is typical of other Jordan 4 colorways. The collaborative design features a gray suede upper, custom footbeds and a glow-in-the-dark sole. Find a collection of KAWS art on 1stDibs.

A 4 prong makes a diamond look larger than a 6 prong because there is less of the stone's surface covered up by the prongs. 4 prong mounting also allows for more light to fall onto the stone.
