Cabinet, in walnut, oak and pandanus, by George Nakashima, United States 1960s. Exceptional cabinet by master woodworker George Nakashima. This wall-mounted case has two spindle sliding doors with pandanus cloth. The cabinet shows the great craftsmanship of Nakashima. Especially visible in the hand-cut dovetail joints. Signed with the client's name on the back of the cabinet. Dovetail are one the most difficult joints in woodworking and require great skills. The Nakashima shop has maintained this time-consuming procedure both as a measure of excellence and a kind of spiritual training for the workmen. George Katsutoshi Nakashima (1905-1990) was an American woodworker, architect and furniture designer. He was the founder of the American Craft Movement and played an important role in 20th century furniture design. From the 1940s on Nakashima started to make and design furniture. His work is characterized by organic and natural shapes of wood and an outrageous quality in woodworking. He used traditional Japanese handtools and difficult joinery techniques like dovetailjoints. This gorgeous model-205 'Sundra' two-door sideboard / credenza by George Nakashima for Widdicomb, circa 1960, features beautiful Walnut, Indian Laurel and Carpathian Elm Burl. Incredible and rare option for design enthusiasts, and art and design investors and collectors but also ideal for interior designers looking to add some sophisticated refinement into an interior project. Nakashima designed the Origins Collection for Widdicomb in 1959 featuring rare woods such as Carpathian Elm, Indian Laurel wood, Walnut and Rosewood and was noted for the fine craftsmanship and attention to the natural beauty of the wood. Nakashima and Widdicomb described the collection as “a subtle elimination of straight lines; almost all pieces have edges that are beveled back ten degrees; many tops overhang substantially more than is usual; and upholstered pieces achieve a “forward thrust” due to the canting of the legs.” The only finish offered on the Indian Laurel wood in the collection was the Sundra finish, sanskrit for “thing of beauty,” a nod to Nakashima’s time in India.
