This piece belonged to the wife of Leroy “Nicky” Barnes, the notorious Harlem figure whose name became synonymous with 1970s New York. Designed by pioneering American fashion designer Scott Barrie, the jacket is constructed in layers upon layers of delicate black floral lace, creating a spectacular tiered and ruffled silhouette. The lace cascades across the shoulders, front, back and sleeves, giving the piece exceptional movement and dimension while maintaining the soft, romantic quality associated with Barrie’s work. The cropped silhouette has the drama of a cape while retaining the structure and wearability of a jacket. A black grosgrain-trimmed center front is finished with faceted black buttons, while the high rounded neckline and voluminous elbow-length sleeves create an unmistakably 1970s romantic and bohemian glamour. Barrie was one of the important African American designers to emerge from New York’s fashion scene in the late 1960s and 1970s. His clothing was carried by prestigious retailers including Henri Bendel and Bloomingdale’s, and his clientele included major fashion figures such as Naomi Sims, Pat Cleveland and Grace Jones. His work became particularly associated with the sensual, fluid and romantic side of 1970s fashion. The provenance makes this example especially compelling. According to the provenance accompanying the piece, it was formerly owned by Nicky Barnes’ wife. Today, the jacket feels remarkably current. The abundance of lace and ruffles works beautifully over a simple black slip dress, camisole and trousers, high-waisted denim, or an evening gown. It can read romantic, Gothic, bohemian or high-fashion depending on the styling. An unusual combination of 1970s New York fashion history, an important African American designer, statement lace construction and noteworthy provenance.
