Buschman “Minerva” German Horizontal Table Clock
Buschman “Minerva” German Horizontal Table Clock

Buschman “Minerva” German Horizontal Table Clock

Located in New Orleans, LA

The extraordinary beauty and superior craftsmanship of 17th century German clockmaking is on full display in this exceptionally rare horizontal tabletop timepiece dating to 1650 Augsburg. Created by Johannes Buschman the Younger, the eminent Buschman family of clockmakers are lauded for designing some of the finest timepieces to ever be created in the South German town of Augsburg during the late Renaissance and early Modern periods. A finely moulded ebony and turtleshell casing veneered in a mottled red hue holds the clock’s fusée and chain movement with verge escapement and balance with hogs-bristle regulation. A silver figure of Minerva, Roman goddess of war and wisdom, centers the Roman numeral-engraved chapter ring, indicating the time by pointing to the hour with an authoritative military staff as the sun rotates below her feet to indicate the minute. The incredible design is finished by a gilded backplate intricately pierced and engraved with a floral motif and the signature of Johannes Buschman. Clocks are one of the greatest and most important inventions of the Renaissance period, improving steadily into the Age of Discovery. Embodying a renewed interest in science, the arts and humanism, the first mechanical timepieces began appearing in the 14th century and were large, weight-driven devices placed in the turrets of public buildings that struck the hour and lacked hands and faces. This clock was created during the first period of household clocks, when spring-driven movements made it possible to create smaller and more complex mechanisms. Such creations, however, were a luxury accessible only to the wealthy upper classes. Affluent patrons placed pressure upon artisans to create more elaborate and ornate clocks...

Vintage Murano Glass Table Clock by Barovier & Toso, Italy, 1950s
Vintage Murano Glass Table Clock by Barovier & Toso, Italy, 1950s

Vintage Murano Glass Table Clock by Barovier & Toso, Italy, 1950s

Located in BARCELONA, ES

Exceptional Murano glass table clock produced by Barovier & Toso in Italy during the 1950s–1960s. The piece is composed of a substantial circular ring of hand-blown Murano glass executed in filigrana technique, featuring an internal white lattimo decoration arranged in a continuous helical pattern. This sculptural glass frame surrounds a circular clock face mounted on a smoked glass support with a finely detailed gilt-metal structure and stand. The remarkable purity and optical dynamism of the glass reflect the refined Venetian craftsmanship associated with mid-century Murano production. Both decorative and architectural in presence, the clock embodies the elegant balance between sculpture and functional design characteristic of Italian glassmaking of the period. The restrained silvered dial with minimalist Arabic numerals and delicate gilt hands contrasts beautifully with the expressive movement of the surrounding glass, creating a highly sophisticated modernist composition. Founded in 1936 through the merger of Vetreria Artistica Barovier and Ferro Toso, Barovier & Toso became one of the most important Murano glass manufacturers of the 20th century. Under the artistic direction of Ercole Barovier, the company developed some of the most celebrated Venetian glass techniques and designs, including Crepuscolo, Brillantati, Zebrati, Acanto and the iconic Cordonato d’Oro series. A rare and highly decorative example of Italian mid-century Murano artistry. Period 1950–1959 Origin Murano, Venice, Italy Materials Murano glass, blown glass, filigrana glass, brass, gilt metal Condition Near-perfect conservation state. The piece presents exceptionally well with no chips, cracks, or visible structural damages to the Murano glass elements. The clock mechanism has been professionally checked and is in perfect working condition. Minor superficial wear consistent with age and careful vintage use. Early Tripod Table Clock by Thomas Cole with Glass Dome
Early Tripod Table Clock by Thomas Cole with Glass Dome

Early Tripod Table Clock by Thomas Cole with Glass Dome

Located in London, GB

An extraordinary rustic tripod table clock by Thomas Cole Retailed by E. White of London The circular green velvet-clad base supporting three equidistantly spaced brass imitation logs, from which the clock and its mechanism are suspended; housed within a brass bezel conformingly styled as naturalistic logs, the circular etched and engraved gilt dial with elegant blued steel hands, marked at 6 o'clock "E. White, 20 Cockspur St, London", having the hours marked in Roman numerals; the tapered two-tier movement has a six wheel train with five-spoke crossings between spotted plates, the upper section fixed by blued steel screws to the backplate, enclosing a Brocot-style deadbeat escapement incorporating rubies and train to the centre wheel, the pendulum of most unusual design styled as a lidded cauldron over a simulated fire. Complete with a glass dome and key. The front plate numbered “1637.” London made, circa 1861 Thomas Cole, (1800-1864) Son of Thomas Cole Snr, a Somerset clockmaker, his history and works are fully recorded in 'Thomas Cole & Victorian Clockmaking' by John B. Hawkins, published 1975, in Sydney. Known as a specialist in making decorative timepieces of the highest quality, Cole exhibited at the Great Exhibition at the Crystal Palace in 1851; he warranted an 'honourable mention' in the Paris Exhibition of 1855 and the London 1862 Exposition International, where he was awarded a medal for 'excellence of taste and design'. Located in West Palm Beach, FL

A spectacular and very important French early 19th century Louis XVI st. white Carrara marble and ormolu clock by Raingo Frères. The clock is raised by elegant topie shaped feet with fine wrap around berried laurel bands below the white Carrara marble base with rounded sides decorated with richly chased pierced intertwined berried laurel and blooming flower bands, and a finely detailed central plaque depicting charming cherubs playing musical instruments. Above are two exquisite patinated bronze maidens sitting on a mottled support with lovely foliate designs each draped in wonderfully executed garments and holding a wreath and flowers with a charming winged cherub extending his arms up. At the center is the elegant enameled dial with Arabic hour numerals amidst lovely floral garlands and numbers indicating the date at the border with delicate pierced ormolu hands with a remarkable pieced foliate design at the back. Above is the lightly curved fluted top crown with a stunning array of richly chased branches and blooming flowers in a superb satin and burnished finish. All original gilt and patina throughout. Antique Table Clocks and Desk Clocks

Whether you’re working on-site or giving your home office the makeover it deserves, a new, vintage or antique table clock or desk clock is a decorative touch that blends ornament and functionality. Who says that a unique desk clock isn’t a meaningful addition to your home office or library? And who says you don’t need a cool clock anymore?

While our means for telling time have evolved from pocket watches to wristwatches and finally to our digital phones, there is likely still a place for a table clock or desk clock in your life, even if it isn’t a modern desk clock.

Antique and vintage clocks appeal to our penchant for nostalgia, whisking us back in time to the 18th and 19th centuries, when clockmakers were busying themselves with designs for objects such as mantel clocks, then ornate pieces that were typically displayed on top of a fireplace. Tabletop clocks and desk clocks are variations on the carriage clock, a small, portable timepiece outfitted with a hinged carrying handle that garnered popularity as the growth of rail travel took shape.

Clocks make great collectibles. More than one mantel clock in your home library is going to elevate the space where your carefully curated stacks of books live, while a well-designed small decorative desk clock can be a fun way to express your personal style. Amid your inkwell, porcelain paperweights and other desk accessories, a desk or table clock designed during the Art Deco or Louis XVI eras, for example, is going to stand out in your workspace as a striking accent.

Since new, vintage and antique tabletop and desk clocks are not as common in today’s interiors, these objects will make a statement in yours. Find a spectacular clock on 1stDibs now.
