This is a welded steel sculpture made by furniture creator Jim Rose. It is sustainable design created from salvaged and recycled steel panels left over from his larger projects. These sculptures reference traditional American Folk Art barn house models or bird houses. This sculpture works alone on a shelf or table or can be grouped with other house sculptures by the artist. Each house sculpture is unique in design and color. After one year at Bard College, Jim transferred to the School of the Art Institute in Chicago (SAIC) where he graduated in 1988 with a BFA. His skillful interpretation of the Shaker design is a result of intense research and field study of Shaker furniture, architecture, culture and history. After over two decades of dedicated work, he has mastered the minimalism of the Shaker technique and created his own unique visual vernacular. The quilts of Gee's Bend have become a monumental influence taking this artist's work to new levels of unique interpretation and artistry. His selection of aged steel results in a patina directly related to that of aged wood while his colored strips beautifully mimic worn cloth. Each piece of furniture is masterfully made and intended for daily use. Jim Rose’s steel furniture is featured every year at SOFA Chicago for the past 25 years. The hinged rectangular top with three oval Signed Wedgwood plaques depicting putti at various pursuits within oval paterae mounted swagged and beaded borders, opening to a morocco leather lined hinged slope enclosing a well, the upper section fitted with candlesticks and compartmentalized for inkwells, above a hinged lid the front with a spring loaded secret drawer opening to a needle or pincushion and spools of thread. This unusual work box, mounted with blue and white jasperware signed Wedgwood plaques, is English in conception. The writing box was a popular form first used in the 18th c and well into the 19th c for traveling. This type of portable desk was described by the English poet William Cowper in 1785 as 'the most elegant, the compactest, the most commodious desk in the world.' Additionally, the jasperware plaques, came from Josiah Wedgwood's factory in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England. Its proximity to the steel manufacturing city of Birmingham, the birthplace of Matthew Boulton, producer of decorative metalwork (including cut steel mounts) and described by his friend and fellow-industrialist, Josiah Wedgwood, as 'the first Manufacturer in England', certainly suggests an English origin and possibly his handwork. Beautiful 'elemento luminose' , illuminated wall sculpture designed by the renowned italian sculptors Nerone Ceccarelli & Giovanni Patuzzi (Gruppo NP2) for the gallery 'Forme and Superfici'. Turin,Italy in 1970. The panel has the engraved signature of both Nerone and Patuzzi and still bears the original 'forme and superfici' paper label to the rear of the panel. This sculpture is published in an original 'Forme e Superfici catalog' and the January 1971 issue of the renowned italian design periodical 'Interni-La rivista dell Arredamento'. The central disc features a beautiful abstract hand crafted sculptural relief motif on metal , probably zinc, which is illuminated by a hidden fluorescent tube light. The frame surrounding the central sculptural disc is finished in stove enameled steel over a wood structure and features copper detailing. One of Nerone and Patuzzi's best known works is the enormous , 150 square metre, bas relief in zinc that they created in 1972 for the 'hemicycle' of the then new 'Schulman' building (1973) in Luxembourg which housed the early meetings of the European Parliament . The hemicycle was beautifully decorated following a project by the architect Simonis, combining different materials (leather, wood, metal) in a geometrical harmony, the whole integrated by Nerone and Patuzzi's huge zinc bas-relief on the rear wall. PLEASE SEE IMAGE 9. The zinc models were engraved using an etching technique, representing geometrical and abstract figures, and mounted on a surface of 150 square metres. The bas-relief was considered at the time to be the biggest sculpture in metal of the world.
