George, Raku Fired Modern White Ceramic Bust of Male Head by Pavel Amromin
George, Raku Fired Modern White Ceramic Bust of Male Head by Pavel Amromin

George, Raku Fired Modern White Ceramic Bust of Male Head by Pavel Amromin

Located in Chicago, IL

This is a white glazed and black clay raku fired ceramic bust. Though modern, this sculpture references Classical Greek and Roman antiquities. A subtle red glaze is used on the lips and the artist has purposefully and mysteriously left a portion around the neck between the head and the chest free of glaze, exposing the black clay beneath. The cracking on the surface is a result of the raku firing process and intended to be there. Pavel Amromin George, 2017 raku fired ceramic 17H x 15W x 9D in 43.18H x 38.10W x 22.86D cm Pavel G. Vintage Boho Cast Marble Bust of Marcus Aurelius
Vintage Boho Cast Marble Bust of Marcus Aurelius

Vintage Boho Cast Marble Bust of Marcus Aurelius

Located in West Palm Beach, FL

This striking vintage bust of a youthful Marcus Aurelius is a masterful example of Neoclassical revival design. Crafted from high-quality cast marble, the sculpture captures the serene expression and iconic, deeply textured curls synonymous with Greco-Roman antiquity. The smooth, polished finish of the bust provides a sophisticated contrast to the heavily distressed black wooden plinth upon which it rests. This intentional juxtaposition of classical form and rustic weathering makes it an ideal statement piece for those who appreciate a curated, academic aesthetic with a hint of bohemian flair. Measuring 8.5" wide, 8.5" deep, and 14.5" tall, this sculptural head is perfectly scaled to anchor a curated bookshelf, an entryway console, or an executive study. It is in great vintage condition, displaying minor surface scuffs and an authentic patina that only serves to enhance its storied character. The distressed finish on the base adds a layer of historic depth, suggesting a piece that has been cherished across generations. Whether anchoring a traditional gallery or adding a timeless touch to a modern home, this Marcus Aurelius bust...

Located in Yonkers, NY

A pair of Greco-Roman style vintage bronze young satyr candle holders from the mid 20th century, holding circular vessels. Created with the traditional technique of the lost-wax (à la cire perdue) which allows for great precision and finesse in the details, this pair of bronze candle holders features two young satyrs with goat legs and floral garlands wrapped around their waist, raising their arms to hold a vessel. Often associated with Bacchus, god of grape-harvest, they are likely carrying wine-filled vessels. Showing perfect movement with their right paw lifted up, the other one firmly planted on a circular base, this pair of Greco-Roman style bronze...

Italian 19th Carved Marble Figure of a Nude Young Bather Girl by Pietro Bazzanti

By Pietro Bazzanti

Located in Los Angeles, CA

Pietro Bazzanti - Barzanti (Italian, 1825-1895) "After the Bath" - a fantastic quality and large carved white Carrara marble figure of a semi-nude young maiden standing by the sea-shore. The smiling and posing young beauty, with bare breasts and back, her right arm juxtaposed over her head, while holding a blanket over her waist with her left hand and standing barefoot by a rocky seawall and wavy shoreline. Signed 'P. Barzanti/Florence' (on reverse) and raised on a cylindrical swiveling carved verde antico solid marble pedestal. circa: Florence, 1880-1890. Pietro Bazzanti or Barzanti (Italian, 1825-1895) was a 19th Century Italian sculptor born in Florence. Together with his brother, Niccolò Bazzanti (Firenze, 1802-1869) who was also a sculptor, they both worked the sprawling Florentine studio 'Pietro Bazzanti e Figlio' a hugely successful sculpture studio, operated within the family at their gallery on Lungarno Corsini until the mid-twentieth century. The studio was a place where many talented professors and apprentice sculptors specialized in sculpting marble...

Late 19th Century Art Nouveau Bust entitled "Silvia" by Emmanuel Villanis
Late 19th Century Art Nouveau Bust entitled "Silvia" by Emmanuel Villanis

Late 19th Century Art Nouveau Bust entitled "Silvia" by Emmanuel Villanis

By Emmanuel Villanis

Located in London, GB

A very fine late 19th century French bronze bust of an attractive classical maiden modelled in the Art Nouveau style, with fabulous multi hued patination of brown and a subtle green, accentuating the excellent hand finished detail. Signed E Villanis, with Societe des Bronzes foundry seal, numbered and with raised title to the fore. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Height: 28 cm Width: 16 cm Depth: 10 cm Condition: Excellent Original Condition circa: 1890 Materials: Bronze Book Ref: Emmanuel Villanis by Josje Hortulanus-de Mik Page No: 79 SKU: 8775 ABOUT Sylvia Ballet - Silvia Sylvia, (the spelling is different in french) is a classical ballet. It features a nondescript mythical setting and a late nineteenth-century score, in which it's themes correlate to giving it a more classical feel, however, it was quite revolutionary for its time. The score was and still is recognized for its greatness. Delibes' work is certainly the best appreciated aspect of the ballet for its innovation, creativity, and maturity. Frederick Ashton's choreography complements the music very well in this respect, staying true to the spirit of the original production while incorporating modern techniques and adding his own unique touch. The ballet itself follows Sylvia who is a loyal follower of Diana (the goddess of the hunting and chassitity). The story starts with Sylvia being stalked by the diety Eros. When she discovers this they fire their bows at each other respectively. However only Eros's shot is true and wounds Sylvia. This is where she is kidnapped by an unknown assailant later revealed to be Orion. Sylvia escapes the caves of Orion by getting her captor intoxicated and pleading to Eros to rescue her. When he begrudgingly rescues her he takes her to the temple of Diana where her love awaits. This leads her to repeal her oath of Chassity taken as a follower of Diana. Emmanuel Villanis Emmanuel Villanis was an industrious man. He is believed to have created some 200 to 250 pieces. His oeuvre pre-eminently consisted of busts and full body statues. Most of these were manufactured in bronze, but there are also models in white metal and terra cotta. Different patinas were used. The bronzes were mainly cast by the Societé de Bronzes de Paris and can be recognised by the round stamp...

The presence of vintage and antique bust sculptures can add a necessary decorative layer to any interior. And just because a statue looks classical doesn't mean it has to be conventional.

A touch of whimsy, a dose of drama — a single bust can alter a room. And when placed in just the right spot, these statues can almost feel alive.

“They give humanity in a way that a more abstract sculpture can’t give,” says Los Angeles designer Timothy Corrigan, who loves pieces that beg to be touched. For a welcoming entry hall project in California, Corrigan selected an antique Persian rug and a bust that invites you to touch it. A collection of sculptures in wood, marble and brass complement the star of the show.

For Consort cofounder and creative director Mat Sanders, a bust doesn’t have to be pretty. “I most enjoy busts that are a little busted,” Sanders jokes — but choose something with a soul you can live with, as “sculpture representative of the human form carries with it an energy you will add to the space.”

The antique and vintage bust sculptures for sale on 1stDibs include Art Deco busts, mid-century modern busts and more.
