Jasba Aztec Exotica Set of 3 Vases, West German Pottery 1960s

By Jasba, Jasba Keramik, West German Pottery

Located in Clifton Springs, NY

The set of 3 vintage Jasba Keramik vases from the 'Aztec' and 'Mexiko' or 'Maya Tiki' lines of their Exotica series features relief decor, influenced by ancient Pre-Columbian civilizations. The sculptural vases in the set interpret traditional vessel forms like a pitcher in a contemporary vein while referencing Pre-Columbian art with an eclectic twist. The vases are decorated with tone-on-tone ochre brown matte glazes on the outer surfaces and semi-matte black glazes on inner surfaces, allowing the complex reliefs to dominate the composition. The vases feature a central wide band of brutalist, rhythmically spaced mythic animals, derived from archaeology or from a wide range of Folk Art sources. The handles are interpreted not as functional parts of the design, but as an important aesthetic feature that was commonly used by West German pottery designers and artists in context of Krug Vase (Jug Vase, or Handled Vase) for their expressive possibilities. In this set, the small handles on two Aztec vases...

Rubboli Lustre Majolica Pitcher Vase Mythical Beasts Decor
Rubboli Lustre Majolica Pitcher Vase Mythical Beasts Decor

Rubboli Lustre Majolica Pitcher Vase Mythical Beasts Decor

By Rubboli

Located in Clifton Springs, NY

Striking ceramic Neo-Renaissance Rubboli pitcher vase features cobalt, red and gold Lustre majolica glaze decoration. Hand-painted decor follows the traditional shape of the piece, with abstract pattern accentuating the base and the top of the vase, and motifs of mythical beasts surrounding central medallion with another mythical creature. The vase is marked on the bottom; the mark "A.R. Italy" dates the piece to 1936-1975. We are offering a large sculptural vase, decorated n the same style, also by Alberto Rubboli, in a separate listing; the vases can be displayed together for a stunning presentation. The vase is a striking example of the revival of the magnificent Italian Renaissance decoration of the 16th century. In late 19th century the collecting craze for Renaissance majolica, especially lusterware, prompted the Italian potters to hunt for the secret formulas that were lost four hundred years earlier. Studios owned by such ceramicists as Cantagalli, Molaroni, Rubboli, Santarella, and others attempted to duplicate antique lusterware pieces for the general public. Each studio developed their own closely guarded formulation. In 1870s Paolo Rubboli...

Located in Tarry Town, NY

Large antique blue and white Delft covered jar, hand-painted in the Netherlands, circa 1880. The jar features a finely fluted body, creating a graceful vertical rhythm and enhancing the visual depth as light interacts with the curved surfaces. The decoration is executed in rich cobalt blue and arranged within shaped cartouches, and depicting detailed still life scenes of flowers, foliage, and birds, surrounded by additional foliate ornamentation. The shoulders are encircled by stylized floral and leaf borders, providing a cohesive transition to the matching domed covers. The cover is surmounted by a traditional Delft finial...
