Vienna Secession Vases

VIENNA SECESSION STYLE & WIENER WERKSTÄTTE

At the turn of the 20th century, Gustav Klimt, Josef Hoffmann and several of their peers separated from the predominant Association of Austrian Artists to form a new professional union, the Vienna Secession.

The artists’ intent to break free from classical traditions in fine art evolved to encompass applied arts and interior design as well: In 1903, Hoffmann and Koloman Moser founded the Wiener Werkstätte, or "Viennese Workshop," to produce progressive furniture, ceramics, glass and textiles.

This talented collective of Austrian artists, architects and designers most famously created works in the Jugendstil style — the German branch of Western Europe's popular Art Nouveau. Jugendstil is associated with dynamic, rhythmic forms and undulating lines.

On 1stDibs, discover the sophisticated Vienna Secession furniture, art and decorative objects — ranging from watercolor paintings and prints to serveware and seating — that transformed Austria over one hundred years ago and maintain timeless appeal today.

"Lidded Urn with Geometric Motifs, " Proto-Art Deco Piece, Margold in Gold, Black
By Emanuel Josef Margold, Serapis Fayence Wahliss
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Spectacularly designed and executed, this rare ceramic lidded urn or vase enriched with a complex interplay of geometric and floral motifs was designed by Austrian architect Emanuel Josef Margold for the famed Wahliss Serapis ceramics line. The rich interplay of oval cartouches filled with stylized flowers and an array of black-and-gold stripes and diaper patterns shows the clear influence of the Secessionists, the Vienna Workshop and the emerging Art Deco style. Margold was born in Austria, studied in Königsberg and Mainz, and later became an assistant to Josef Hoffmann and an employee of the Wiener Werkstätte. In 1907, publisher Alexander Koch in Darmstadt became aware of Margold and published his designs in various magazines. Within a few years, Margold moved to Darmstadt to join the art colony there, and became a prolific designer of jewelry...
